Are there laws against a school social worker discussing parents financial state with students without parent?
Someone had left a check donation for my injured 22 yr old son with a social worker at my 12 yr old's last school. She called me, and I told her about the bad financial situation we are in due to his injury. She called his new school, and the social worker there gave him a form requesting Christmas assistance. That would be ok, but she didn't put it in an envelope, and she told him that it was a form to get him presents if we were having financial troubles. I called her saying she had no right to indicate to my 12 yr old that we were having financial troubles, and she argued with me saying she always does it that way. There has to be privacy laws against this, but I can't find them. Can anyone tell me plz so my letter to the principal will be correct. Thank you
Thank you for your comments and advice. I do not hide these problems from my sons. Indeed we talk a lot about it. I think talking is the key to getting a family thru every day and remain close. I have been visiting the local food bank off and on since I lost my job in 08. I started growing plants to sell at the farmer's market that yr, Each year since, I bring a son to the food bank with almost 300 tomato plants to give out to the patrons there. I teach my sons to give back & give forward.
What if we were Jewish or Jehovah's Witness? She should not have addressed my son without calling me 1st unless she had cause. My son is a straight A student, well mannered & well liked. He has good attendance, and is a member of the Beta Club, band, and wrestling team. He has maintained a great attitude & gpa despite his brother, who used to coach his soccer team, being left a paraplegic 9 months ago. She shouldn't be taking him out of class unless it is absolutely necessary anyway. Th

You can't find them because there are none. Simple as that. While it may not be appropriate, it's not illegal, most kids know parents are having financial issues. I never hid this info from my kids.

Not only are there no laws about this, you're (hopefully) not going to find anyone on your side of "deceiving a child is the best way to go with this."
Instead of teaching the child to be secretive and deceptive, teach him or her to be upfront and honest, share the responsibility, and work together to find solutions. You're not raising a baby. You're raising an adult who has to know the best way to succeed in relationships and in life, or fail.
It's a cruel, hard world out here, and your child will be in no way prepared to face it if s/he lives an entire life with a mother who pretends everything's okay, instead of showing the child how to overcome obstacles by example.
