Help me understand theists?

Theists can totally believe that God lives up in a cloud, made Adam and Eve, got Mary pregnant, created everything they know in their world, yet, they refuse to believe that life started from single-celled organisms. The most far-fetched stories and miracles are completely plausible to them but not evolution. What's the difference?

I am fairly educated and understand some of the mechanisms for evolution but I still struggle with other parts. How it all fits together I don't know. Belief in God and special creation does not preclude evolution occurring and giving rise to knew species of animals. However the theory of how it all got started, or that everything comes from a single cell leaves a lot to be desired.

The only real difference is faith. The idea of there being a god is, to most people, much more appealing than the idea of evolution. With religion, there is an afterlife, and people are given a morality system to follow. This does not come with science. It's not supposed to make sense to us, and atheism isn't supposed to make sense to theists. We'll just never truly understand each other, unless we truly have been on both sides. And even if I wanted to, I can't fool myself into believing there is a god. I'm too logical for that.

Do you know how it is possible for one cell to become billions of cells in the human body

Do you know how a human baby can develop into so many cells so fast.

See it doesnt take millions of years if you are created by a supernatural God

How does one cell become two with just time on its side. How does one cell become a cell that makes up another structure like an eye or a brain. Evolution is a lot harder to prove than Gods creations

Can you help me understand atheists? They believe the world started from a big bang and we evolved from primates, but they can't believe in a God that loves them so much as to offer his son to die so we don't have to live in this crap hole of a world that we screwed up forever? It must suck to be an atheist; to think that this is all there is. That we are here by mistake and just animals. That there is nothing after we die except dirt and maggots. That must suck so much. At least I have hope. And as for all the crazy stuff in the Bible, if you can't believe in it, that's fine, nobody can force you, but I think it's pretty awesome. I mean, atheists believe is some weird stuff too, but it's all science and boring crap. Where's the fun in that?

It's a preconceived bias. Whatever they think threatens their most treasured beliefs, they'll fight against. When you add eternal torment into the mix? It just ups the anty.

The less fanatic, more secular, theists will tend to be less resistant to change; and will happily reconcile their beliefs with new information.

It's the red-state christians in the US who seem to have the issue with evolutionary theory. You'll find most christians are entirely fine with the medicine made by said theory.

Theists are only people who choose to believe in God (or gods). Not all theists are creationists or anti-science, in fact they are a small minority (but a very vocal minority, professing to speak for all). Just as all Muslims do not believe it's their ultimate destiny to kill all infidels, just as all Jews aren't greedy or communistic.

People have always seemed to want to believe in something bigger and more permanent than themselves. It's part of human nature; we've always been that way. Religions have grown more complex and sophisticated over the millenium. And I think by themselves they are mostly harmless. The harm comes when religion serves as a handmaiden to politics (which it has forever) or when people of one religion decide that as believers in the only -true- religion they are entitled to special rights and privileges above the rest of us.

You're talking about fundamentalism, basically people who confuse belief with knowledge, or who feel they have the right to impose their own beliefs and values on others, by force if necessary, for their own good.

But American fundamentalist Christianity today is a POLITICAL thing. Fundamentalist Christianity today is very tightly associated with one political party and its leaders conflate a political view with their spiritual view. The movement is fed and promoted with political money! REAL spiritual leaders shun politics, they are conciliatory, they try to smooth over conflicts by reminding their followers of the original principles of their religion. Political spiritual leaders are divisive, seeking to polarize people, to define a gulf between US and THEM. The fight between creationism and evolution, like the War on Christmas, the abortion issue, prayer in schools, etc. etc. are all just devices to polarize people and set one group against another. This is politically useful but spiritually very counterproductive.

You're not describing theists, you are describing Christians. Theists just believe in a higher power. All Christians are theists but not all theists are Christians.

No, you misunderstand the term. Not all theists believe in the God of the Bible.

I believe in evolution. God is both evolver and creator.

If your premise about evolution is true, then theists are simply the result of evolution. Why do you have a problem with them? They are only doing what evolution is making them do. If there is no God and we are just a cosmic accident, that means our thoughts are also accidents. Why should your accidental thoughts have any more credibility than my accidental thoughts? Just let it be.
