What to do with a hostile stray cat in my house?

My Dad lost his beloved cat and went around the neighborhood looking for it. Long story short, a neighbor thought he'd found it and my Dad, not realizing it wasn't him, let it loose in the house after being examined by a vet. Well it wasn't the right cat and now we have a very hostile, unfriendly stray cat in our house. Luckily he doesn't come out much and hides behind the microwave 99% of the day coming out only at night briefly to eat and drink. He hisses at our 3 other cats and attacks us if we come near him. What should we do about this cat? We've tried leaving the door open for him to leave but he just goes behind the microwave again, not taking the opportunity to be free. Should we let animal control catch him? Or let things continue as they have been? Any other suggestions?

Have the neighbor come and get the cat... He seems to be able to handle it

The cat is fearful not hostile. If you let him stay he probably will calm down and start adjusting to your household. It takes a social friendly cat at least two weeks to adjust to a new home. It usually takes a scared cat longer than that.

At least once a day when the cat is hiding, go near his hiding place, talking softly to him. Don't try to handle him unless he comes up to be petted. After talking to the cat a minute or so, give him a small amount (like a tablespoon) of canned cat food. Then walk away and leave him alone to eat it. This teaches the cat that when you come to him, good things happen to him and will help ease his fears. The first time the cat lets you pet him, only pet the top of his head and gently scratch his neck and behind his ears. If the cat shows fear while you pet him, immediately stop petting him and SLOWLY quietly walk away from him.

It takes time and patience to help a fearful cat overcome its fears but it can be done. I've tamed many fearful and even feral cats over the years.

I'd say give the cat a bit of time to relax and calm down. Stray animals who are not used to human interaction might take a short or very long time to become trustful of people. You could take the cat to a shelter, but I warn you that a cat that feral would most likely be deemed adoptable and would probably be put to sleep. Just keep leaving food out, don't bother it, and it will come out eventually. It just might take a while.

Dont get that poor kitty more frightened than it already is, i advise you not to call animal control, if what your saying is all correct, i dont know what the they are like in your area, the cat would probably be put to sleep, a scared, animal aggressive, stray. Dont let that happen because some ******** brought home the wrong cat like am idiot
