If these are large mats, they are probably beyond combing or trimming. Please take him to the Vet to have them removed; and do it as soon as possible.

Mats pull at the cats skin and can become very painful. If you try to comb/brush them out, you are pulling his skin worse. If you use scissors and he moves, you can accidentally cut the cats skin (unfortunately, I've done both of these to my Maine Coon mix). If you leave them, more and more fur will get matted, and you will probably end up having to get all his fur shaved (a lion cut).

I suggested the Vet instead of a groomer because the Vet can sedate the cat to make the process much less traumatic.

Once the mats are gone, he will need to be brushed daily to keep them from coming back.

    Good luck.

If you need to cut the mats out do NOT try it yourself: cats can and will struggle while you are doing it...I've seen a few cats die when they moved in a way the owner didn't expect and the trachea got punctured.

They will probably need to be shaved out (which is the safest thing really and most comfortable for the cat).

Your local vet will usually do it...some grooming salons or pet stores won't groom cats since they can be more fractious than (and around) dogs.

Brushing them gently, and bathing them monthly. If it's a long haired cat, maybe get their fur trimmed at the local pet store to minimize matting.

Try rubbing olive oil into it and gently brushing/combing them out. If they're too tangled then you will have to cut them out. Try brushing and combing your cat everyday to prevent tangles.

You can try shampoo and creme rinse, then a good brushing. Or a pair of scissors
