Should I not follow up after a job application?

I m an 18 (soon to be 19) year old college student living in Philadelphia PA and I only have a little bit of work experience. I landed a work study job at the Free Library of Philadelphia and I worked there for about 4 months mostly working in their afterschool program and computer assistance during the semesters. Now that they re over, I m out of a job. I ve applied to about 7 or 8 retail places in about a week (I didn t apply to any fast food places because it would be easier to transition my skills and experience to retail and customer service). I just tried following up with one of them (The Target I applied to) and she said that if I was qualified, I d be contacted but she spoke in a rude manner. I felt like I annoyed her by asking. I ve only been contacted for one interview for tomorrow but that s it. Should I just wait to be contacted or should I follow up?

the correct steps in applying for a job are (1) apply online using the main job boards (2) apply onto to those jobs that you have transportation to/from (3) after you apply, wait 2 weeks, and if not contacted, send an email asking about your app (4) do NOT call a potential employer unless instructed to do so

Yes she was ticked off, managers do not have time to talk to applicants, they may get a hundred a week, and if all of them called that is all they would be doing is answering the phone (secretary).

If they are interested in you, they will call you, if not they won't.

Years ago doing a follow up call was considered ambition or wiliness, today it is considered a kiss of death

have you ever heard of an applicant getting hired without being contacted? me either

Most stores will ONLY contact you if they are interested and YES they do get annoyed if you follow up. This is an unfortunate change to the way it used to be.
