Am I being selfish? Should I just listen to my mom?

Question

Ever since I was in the 3rd grade I have been fascinated by pregnancy and how the body changes. In the 6th grade, it was mandatory for the girls at my school to take a small course on periods, sex, and pregnancy. Ever since then I knew I wanted to be an Ob-Gyn doctor. Now I am a freshman in college. I had a long talk with my mom about my future and she told me that she doesn't think that a being a doctor is right for me especially since I would have to attend school for another 10 more years. Recently, she has convinced me to become a physicians assistant. I was really into the idea since I could just become an Ob-Gyn's physician assistant, however my mom does not want me to work under an Ob-Gyn. She wants me to work under like an anesthesiologist or someone who performs a lot of surgeries so that I can get paid more. I understand that she wants the best for me, but the only reason why I even want to become a physician assistant is to work with an Ob-Gyn other than that I have no interest. I also don't think its right to choose a job based on how much you get paid. You should be passionate about your job. Am I right or is my mom right?

You are absolutely not selfish. I agree with you, you shouldn't pick a job based off how much you get paid. My dad is actually an OB/GYN and that has been his interest since the start of college too and he loves doing it! And well he is a doctor so he makes a very decent living. Anything in the higher positions in the medical field, you'll be getting paid well. Then my mom is an OB nurse (L&D nurse) and she absolutely loves it too. so do what you love! who cares how much you get paid. Get a job that you are more passionate about and that you'll never get bored with!

You're right! You're an adult and you should be picking your career. YOU are the one that will be waking up everyday to go to this job, not her, so pick what you will like best. If you really want to be an Ob-Gyn, then do it! If you think the physicians assistant is a better choice, then do that and just don't mention to her anymore that you plan on working under an Ob-Gyn! That isn't lying. It is protecting yourself. If I followed the path my parents wanted me to take, I would be miserable. Instead, I followed my own and it turned out better than I could have imagined. They've forgiven me for not doing what they wanted.

You are right! You should do what you want to do because you are the one who has to live with that career for the rest of your life! If you want to be a doctor, go for it! Don't let your mother make you be less than you desire and if being an assistant is what you want, that is okay too. But can do anything if you put your mind to it!
