Pain in top off foot?

I DID go to the doctor who told me I had an ankle sprain and tendonitis.

This pain has been lasting about 2 weeks and there is no swelling or physical external indication of the pain. The pain is between my 4th and 5th metatarsals and hurts most when I walk. When I walk I feel it both on the top and bottom of my left foot, causing me to limp. I have been massaging what I think is my extensor digitorum longus tendon and it really does hurt and when I press it I can feel it in my toes too.

I didn t have any injuries to foot or fall or anything that would really cause it to hurt at all.

Any ideas on what could be causing the pain? I don t really have symptoms of an ankle sprain as the doctor suggested.
