i am confused why I got turned down for this job?

So I am 23 years old, I have been working since i was 17, I was 4 Years of retail experience, from inventory to sales, and two years of Management experience. I was a department manager at one store and had a team of 5-10 employees, and now i am the Assistant Manager at a store of 15-20 employees.

I interviewed with the owner of a small business in town, who just started in November, and she needed a Customer Service Manager to help her out, i interviewed with her, and in my opinion the interview was pretty unprofessional, I mean her friend was sitting there doing her own thing while she interviewed me in the lobby, and i asked her a question like what her sales or revenue was, and she flat out told me she didn't know how to answer that.

Anyways a day later I got an email saying she decided to hire someone with less experience??? I have never heard of that one before, I mean is that really a valid reason in your opinion.

She said less experience, what she meant was someone cheaper.

she's telling you you are over qualified for the job she has for you, she probably felt she could not pay what someone with your expertise would ask

she obviously is so new to this she doesn't see that your experience would probably lead to more success than paying less money to someone with less experience and ultlimately succeeding to a much lesser degree

it's her loss as well as yours

They are probably hiring a friend. Sometimes people will hire a friend over someone with better experience. You would not have been happy there as they do not sound very professional.

despite popular belief you don't need brains or experience to make money as you see you should be her but you are not she will make a few dollars and can afford someone like you who will make her a millionaire they have the gaul a decent person would be ashamed you made her the boss look like an idiot not a bit of it that is capitalism the best don't always win she will bumblingly make her million penny pinching employees you would probably do well and pay a decentwage think about it you do sound efficient and the world is desperate for it

She may have considered you overqualified and thought that she would have to pay you more than she could afford. It does happen. It could have also been a cover up for some other reason she chose not to hire you.

The question about her sales and revenue was pretty bold. Her response seems to indicate that she was offended by it or that she felt it was inappropriate.

Working for a startup is risky since they could go out of business at any time and they might not be able to provide a steady paycheck.

The interesting thing is you state it was an unprofessional experience but I'm sure you wouldn't have said the same thing had they hired you. It's normal to feel that way after being turned down for a job since it's a form of social rejection. It's a defense mechanism and your mind's way of protecting your own self-esteem when somebody tells you you're not good enough.

"I want someone with less experience" is actually recruiter speak for "I want someone cheaper than you".

It sounds like she doesn't really know what she's doing - I mean as the owner of the business if she doesn't know the sales or revenue that's a bad sign. Sounds like it wouldn't have been a good opportunity anyway.
