  • Little Dorrit explained?

As I noticed I wasn't the only one confused about the ending of Little Dorrit, I thought I would have a look for a clearer explanation than the one the series gave us.

Here is part of the text from the book when Rigaud starts to read the will:

Rigaud snapped his fingers tauntingly in her face. ‘One thousand guineas to the little beauty you slowly hunted to death. One thousand guineas to the youngest daughter her patron might have at fifty, or (if he had none) brother’s youngest daughter, on her coming of age, “as the remembrance his disinterestedness may like best, of his protection of a friendless young orphan girl.” Two thousand guineas. What! You will never come to the money?’

‘That patron,’ she was vehemently proceeding, when he checked her.

‘Names! Call him Mr Frederick Dorrit. No more evasions.’

‘That Frederick Dorrit was the beginning of it all. If he had not been a player of music, and had not kept, in those days of his youth and prosperity, an idle house where singers, and players, and such-like children of Evil turned their backs on the Light and their faces to the Darkness, she might have remained in her lowly station, and might not have been raised out of it to be cast down. But, no. Satan entered into that Frederick Dorrit, and counselled him that he was a man of innocent and laudable tastes who did kind actions, and that here was a poor girl with a voice for singing music with. Then he is to have her taught. Then Arthur’s father, who has all along been secretly pining in the ways of virtuous ruggedness for those accursed snares which are called the Arts, becomes acquainted with her. And so, a graceless orphan, training to be a singing girl, carries it, by that Frederick Dorrit’s agency, against me, and I am humbled and deceived!—Not I, that is to say,’ she added quickly, as colour flushed into her face; ‘a greater than I. What am I?’

Jeremiah Flintwinch, who had been gradually screwing himself towards her, and who was now very near her elbow without her knowing it, made a specially wry face of objection when she said these words, and moreover twitched his gaiters, as if such pretensions were equivalent to little barbs in his legs.

‘Lastly,’ she continued, ‘for I am at the end of these things, and I will say no more of them, and you shall say no more of them, and all that remains will be to determine whether the knowledge of them can be kept among us who are here present; lastly, when I suppressed that paper, with the knowledge of Arthur’s father—’

‘But not with his consent, you know,’ said Mr Flintwinch."

    Hope that helps!

  • How to retrieve lost address book from Outlook?

My computer got infected by a virus and I had to undergo a partial recovery of the hard drive meaning my PC was set back to its factory state. However most of my files were saved. I just needed to reinstall various software including Outlook 2002. The problem is I had to reset my email account and seem to have lost all my old emails but more importantly my address book.

Is there a way to retrieve my list of contacts (if so how?) or is it lost for good? PC is on XP.

Many thanks in advance for any help and advise you might have!

  • Help needed from any Youtube experts?

    Hi!

I've uploaded a video on Youtube but it has been rejected because the length is too long. The file is 632MB and it last 15min 12s.

I was wondering if there is a way to split it in two parts or shrink it a bit once it's there on Youtube? I could not see anything on the website which would allow this but wanted to check with you guys before having to upload it again as it takes such a long time.

    Thanks for any advice!

  • Friend or not?

Basically I've got a work mate who I generally get on very well with. I've always thought we'd be great friends but lately he's puzzled me. There are times when he is being really friendly and kind with me and then he would ignore me totally or let me down. He's told me before that he likes me and values our friendship but quite a lot of the time his actions don't fit his words.

I don't quite understand why he is being like this and I'm starting to be fed up of making efforts and having next to nothing in return.

What would you do in my position? Carry on like this or just not bothering anymore? And why are men so complicated?!

  • Do you think you could be in love with more than one person at the same time?

I mean loving at least two people equally.

Has it happened to you? If so, how did you deal with it?

    Cheers!

  • Do men & women have the same conception of friendship?

I would be really interested to know from both genders what is your definition of a friend or friendship in general.

My boyfriend argues that a woman's conception of it is different than a man's.

    What do you think?

    Cheers!

  • Am I overreacting or being too harsh?

I've organised a trip to the pub near my work the other day for my colleagues and me and nobody turned up. Needless to say I felt like crap about it! I'm particularly upset that someone I did consider a good friend could not even bother to make an appearance. He has been apologetic about it but it is not the first time he's let me down. As much as I like him and care about him I told him not to bother with me anymore.

Would you say that's a bit harsh?

I've been hurt so many times in the past by so-called friends and don't want to get hurt anymore.

Any feedback on this would be greatly appreciated as I'm feeling really low right now.

    Cheers!

  • Help in recovering a deleted word document?

    Hi!

Back in January I deleted a word document (from the recycling bin!) I didn't think I would need again.

Do you know if there is any chance of being able to recover it and how?

I have tried system restore (but can't go further back than march!), software like recuva and file recover but they aren't free.

I would be very thankful to any advice and suggestion you might have.

    Cheers!

  • When you were kids did you ever play dangerous games?

Did you play in dangerous places?

Obviously when we are children we don't always appreciate how risky some of our games or some places can be. But now looking back do you realise that it could all have ended up in tears or worse...?

  • Uploading videos onto MySpace?

    Hi!

I've tried to upload one of my short films onto MySpace but the file is too big (660MB). The website only allows 100MB apparently.

I've zipped the file to compress it but it came out as a 620MB (not very usefull!)

Any idea what to do? Ideally I rather not split the film into various parts. Does anyone know of a good "compressor" or anything else I could do?

    Many thanks for your help!

  • Problem with my freeview box, can someone help, please?

    Hi!

I've had my freeview box since july 2007 and everything worked fine until yesterday. I tried to switch the box on with the remote but nothing happened. Obviously, the first thing I did was to check the batteries but they were fine.

I then switched the power on and off at the mains and the box switched on. But I could not switch channels at all. The only way to control the box is by remote.

The problem seems to be with either the remote sensor or the box.

The box is a Sagem ITD 58.

Has anybody got any idea what is wrong with it? Or has anyone had a similar problem with their box/remote?

I've looked on the manual and on the internet but to no avail.

    Thanks for any help/advice!

  • Bad reception with freeview: help!?

    Hi!

I've got a freeview box and the reception is fine when the weather is good. However, the picture and sound break when it starts to rain or gets windy. I've added an indoor booster but it doesn't make a difference.

I think the area I live in has a rather poor reception!

Any ideas or suggestions about what I could do to get rid of this problem?

    Thanks in advance!

  • How can I avoid receiving 3 copies of the same email?

I've just installed Microsoft Outlook on my PC (I was previously using Outlook express) and managed to get it to work.

But I keep on receiving 3 copies of the same email in my inbox.

Any idea what to do to only receive one copy?

I've browsed all the help and troubleshooting pages but there's nothing about that. Any help would be much appreciated! Cheers!

  • Is it possible to make a stop-motion animation using a Canon XL1?

The camera takes still pictures and store them on tape (and not on a memory card). But is it possible to transfer them on a PC and make an animation just using a standard editing software?

Thanks for sharing any tips or experience you might have!

    Cheers!
