10 AnswersBaby Names1 decade agoReincarnation theories...?
What religions believe in reincarnation? How do they differ from each other?
Before I get jumped on -- I am not questioning whether reincarnation is true or false. I just want to learn about it. I am a writer and am hoping to use a reincarnation theory in one of my books. I just have to figure out a way to westernize it just enough to make people want to read it, but I also want it to have a "historical" basis.
Any good references you could link to would be a great help too! Thanks!
5 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoIs Taryn okay for a main character's name?
I've finished my ms (I'm on re-write #3) and now I'm second guessing my main character's name (Taryn). Will people know how to pronounce it? Is there some kind of hidden rule that you shouldn't use hard to pronounce/unusual names for main characters? My other con with the name is that is doesn't really have a good nickname for someone to call her in a loving way. In real life, a nickname would be Tar (except with a long "a" and not the short vowel of the black stuff like "tar and feathers". It looks odd to me to do a re-spelling like "Tare" where I have to add a letter to make a nickname.
So, my question: Should I rename her? If so, I need ideas! She's tall and skinny with pale skin, dark hair, and blue eyes (in my head, she looks like a tomboy-ish version of Alexis Bledel--you can google that name for an image if you've never heard of her). The problem is that I don't want to give her a feminine name because it doesn't fit her personality, BUT... I've written it in first person, and in the beginning I don't go right out and say that she's a girl, but I want people to KNOW she's a girl by her name (I had one person read it and she didn't pay attention to when her name was first said. She read the first few pages thinking it was a boy, and then she was really confused when "he" turned into a girl).
Any tomboy-ish sounding names (that won't have her mistaken for a boy) that fits her image?
Thanks for the help!
3 AnswersBooks & Authors1 decade agoWhat is causing my ear pressure?
I woke up at 2 in the morning last night with a lot of ear pressure (almost like they needed to pop, but worse). I was also really dizzy when I got up. I went back to sleep and it wasn't relieved this morning, but the dizziness is gone. I don't have any other symptoms other than being really sensitive to sound and most noises make my head ring. Things as simple as running water in the sink or someone mowing outside make my head hurt like crazy!
Should I go to the doctor or do you think it's just blocked eustation tubes?
Thanks in advance!
1 AnswerOther - Diseases1 decade agoWhat can I expect with my toddler's tonsillectomy?
My son is 2 1/2 and is getting his tonsils and adenoids out on Friday. I was hoping to get input from other parents on what I can expect. I tried looking it up online but it made me too upset to look at some of the things my baby is going to have to go through.
So here are some of my questions:
Can I expand on the list of what he can eat? The doctor gave me a list (spaghetti that's cut up well, jello, ice cream, stuff like that) but can I give him things that aren't on the list, but are still soft? Like applesauce?
Also, what kinds of medications will he most likely get? The doctor told me, but my son hadn't had a nap that day and was running wild in the office and I can't remember half of what the doctor told me.
How long (most likely) will it be before he can go back to daycare?
And finally, how can I explain what is going to happen on Friday to my son? He likes to know ahead of time. Like when they drew his blood, I told him what they were going to do and that it wasn't going to feel good and he did really well with it because he knew what to expect. That's just his personality. Any good ideas of how to explain this on to him?
Thank you in advance for answering any or all of my questions; especially if you've been in this situation before!
3 AnswersToddler & Preschooler1 decade agoToddler sleep problems?
I have two sleep issues with my 2 1/2 year old son.
He's always slept in his own bed (except for a couple of months when he was first born and was colicky) until now. Since he learned to open his own door, he's been coming into our room in the middle of the night to sleep with us. We decided to let him do this for awhile and it was a big mistake. So, I want to get him to stay in his bed all night. The problem is that I rarely remember lifting him up into the bed with us, but I know that I do. I don't completely wake up. An option would be to lock his door and turn the monitor back on, but is this wrong? To lock your kid in his room at night? Do you have any idea how I can get him to stay in his own bed?
My second problem is that he's waking up too early. He goes to bed at 7, but he rarely falls asleep until 8 or 9 and he STILL wakes up early. Like before 5 am. Any advice on that issue too?
1 AnswerToddler & Preschooler1 decade agoSore throat: Should I go to the doctor?
My husband had a strep test a week ago and it was positive.
Now, for the last two days it hurts me to swallow, and it seems to be getting worse tonight. It doesn't just hurt to swallow; it hurts all the time. I have no other symptoms of strep though. Should I go ahead and go to the doctor or wait and see if I have other symptoms first?
Normally I would wait, but I'm hesitant to now because I have finals next week and feeling terrible this coming week would not be a good thing.
Thanks in advance!
2 AnswersInfectious Diseases1 decade agoHow do I finish potty training my son?
My son is 2 years and 4 months. He was ready to potty train, so about 2 months ago I had a "naked weekend" and we did the naked from the waist down thing. It took awhile, but now he does really well... when he's naked. If he has a pull-up, diaper, or training pants on then he'll go in them (#1 and #2). When he's naked he does both 1 and 2 in the potty. Also, if I just put pants on him now (with nothing under them) he'll take the pants off and go on the potty with just about 100% success. I just can't send him to daycare with no underwear on under his clothes... I don't think they'll like that.
So, my question is... how do I transition him so he'll keep his training pants or regular underwear dry? Also, what do I do about his daycare? I'm fairly certain that they won't let him go to school in regular underwear if he's going to have an accident.
Any help? Thank you!
2 AnswersToddler & Preschooler1 decade agoWhat do you think of Westboro Baptist Church picketing soldiers' memorial services?
They are going to be in my town today picketing a memorial service of a guy I graduated high school with who died in the war.
Have you heard of them? What is your opinion on them picketing a man's memorial service because of what he represents (an America of "fags") by serving in the military.
6 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoHow do I get my toddler to stop biting at school?
My son is 2 and has been biting at least twice a week at school. He doesn't do it at home, so I can't control how he is disciplined for this. At school they make them give hugs and apologize, and then I talk to him about how it's not nice when he gets home. I've also tried, "Does Mommy bite?" "Does (teacher's name) bite?" ... He says no to these, but it doesn't seem to work.
I'm ordering this book online called, "Teeth are Not for Biting." Do you have any other suggestions for this?
What I find ironic is it happens the same time everyday. Around 5 pm. I'm starting to wonder if it's not because he's hungry and gets mad because he's hungry and takes it out on his friends.
2 AnswersToddler & Preschooler1 decade agoTwo year old doesn't want to take a bath?
My two year old used to love taking a bath, but now he's scared of it because he had several times in a row where he pooped in the bath tub. Now when I ask him if he wants to take one he cries and says, "No! Poopie in there!"
What can I do to get him to take a bath? I didn't make a huge deal or get him in trouble when he did it. I just cleaned it up because I knew it was an accident.
Thanks!
