I am an avid cook and baker, and a 7+ year Wilton Method cake decorating instructor. I also worked part-time as a baker and cake designer for a catering company/coffee house. My love of baking began when I was a teenager, and my cooking skills developed after I got married and started a family. For Yahoo! Answers, I stick to areas I am very knowledgable about, like Cooking and Baking. I take my time and research my answers as necessary and carefully write them out so that they are clear and helpful. This is why I typically have a high percentage of Best Answers, higher than many of the supposedly top answerers in the category. I despise it when people just cut and paste recipes they have no experience with or just refer people to their blog. If you have a question about cake decorating or baking and want a quicker answer than through Yahoo Answers, email me through this profile and I'll get back to you. Call me the MacGyver of cake decorating questions!

  • Can a website use an unregistered/untrademarked logo without permission?

A non-profit organization for which I am president commissioned a graphic artist to create artwork to form a logo for the group. Does the artist retain copyrights, or does the organization hold copyrights if exclusive rights have been granted to us? If a website published this logo without our permission, are they in violation of copyright law and do we have the right to demand that it be removed? Does it matter if the group has not trademarked the logo?

  • Why can't I send outgoing mail in Windows Live Mail?

I bought a laptop last year, and use our home's wireless internet connection. I set up Windows Live Mail the same way I had Windows Mail set up on our wired desktop, with the same settings. I am able to receive messages through Live Mail on the laptop, but my outgoing messages won't go through. I've tried changing the outgoing server to all three settings (POP, IMAP, SMTP) but none works. I get the error message "The server does not support an SSL connection."

    Any help?

  • How do I handle this re-gifting situation?

Every year at Christmas and birthdays, I get the idea that my sister-in-law is re-gifting items to my kids. I know it is "the thought that counts" but trust me, there is no thought going into this. She continually gives my kids gifts that are not appropriate for their tastes, ages, or interests.

I usually give her kids a small gift card for a major retailer, which they can use to buy a small toy or put towards the purchase of a video game, etc. For example, this year I gave each of her two boys a $10 gift card for Target and $5 cash. My son received a Transformers type toy item I had never seen or heard of before and which does not match his interests. My daughter received four $1 cartoon DVDs of cartoons we had never heard of before, the cheap DVDs that are sold at the checkout lanes of mass retailers.

I don't want to seem petty by keeping score, but $4 for a Christmas gift seems to indicate very little thought or care in giving a gift to me. At least one time during one of his birthday parties, my son was told by his cousin that the gift they brought him was something that he had received as a gift and his mother did not want to keep.

I don't think this is an issue of not having the money to spend, because her kids are getting things like Wii systems and games, and they bought themselves a new flat screen TV for the family this Christmas.

How do I handle this situation? Do I continue to let it go, or do I start to give inappropriate or cheap gifts in return? Do I bring up the subject (perhaps ask for a receipt to exchange a gift because it is not appropriate) or suggest next year the kids exchange gift cards of a certain dollar amount with each other?

  • Do I have exclusive rights to the recipe I created?

I created an original recipe (using parts of 2 or 3 recipes for homemade energy bars) for a muffin bar/energy bar type baked good. I also came up with an original and locally topical name for this item. I went to work for a local coffee house as their baker, and we sell this item under the name that I created (not trademarked). I did not receive any compensation (other than for my hours worked) for this creation by my employer.

I am planning to leave this employer and wonder if my recipe creation and/or the name are "mine": that is, do I have the right to ask/demand that they not sell "my" bar after my departure? Or, at least, can I claim the name as my creation, and stipulate that they must credit me with the creation of the recipe or market it under another name? I know that copyright laws are elusive when it comes to recipes.

    Thanks for any help!

  • Bathroom exhaust fan problem.....fix or replace?

We have been having a problem with our bathroom exhaust fan, which previously (almost 5 years) worked without any problems. Now when we run the fan, water pools up in the ceiling and drips down to the floor from a spot a few inches away from the fan. Could this be caused by a clog? Does everything just need a good cleaning? Or should we replace it altogether? We do not have a manual for the fan, as it was already in the house when we bought it.

  • Can you only add comments to questions you have answered?

I've been looking through resolved questions and noticed several I would like to comment on or provide more info to the asker. However, in most of these cases the asker does not allow IM or email through Yahoo!Answers. I know that in the past when I have supplied an answer to a question, I have been able to leave comments after the question was closed/the asker selected the best answer.

Is there no universal comment button for all questions? Do I have to add a question to my watch list or something first in order to comment on it?

  • Does anyone know of any good home baking magazines?

There are tons of cooking magazines, both for everyday cooks (Reiman publications various magazines) and the more upscale (Bon Appetit, Food & Wine, etc.) But I am hard pressed to find a regular (monthly/bimonthly) magazine about home baking. I get Very Best Baking and other free cooking magazines from Kraft Foods and other companies, but there must (or should) be baking magazines one can subscribe to. Any ideas?

  • What is your favorite cereal from when you were a kid?

I'm feeling nostalgic right now about Quisp and King Vitamin (which pretty much tasted the same!) and thinking about other cereals from my youth. Which ones do you miss and remember fondly?

  • Share your best ground turkey recipes?

Please....no meatloaf, burgers, or chili.......I'd prefer soup and casserole recipes that have strong enough flavors that work well with ground turkey. I already have tried replacing ground beef with ground turkey in several favorite recipes, but some come out too bland. Also, I am using ground turkey to promote a leaner, lower fat diet......please do not share recipes that are loaded with high fat ingredients. Thanks!

  • Mileage deductions-does this qualify?

I am an independent contractor, a cake decorating instructor, at 3 stores. For the latest store I began teaching at, I am unsure if I can deduct my mileage to and from the store. This is a national chain of stores, and in this case, unlike the other stores, I actually became an employee of the store chain. However, I only work as an instructor and do not work as a general store employee....my only time on the clock is for teaching classes, or doing demonstrations to promote classes, for which I am paid a flat fee based on how many students are in class, etc. I do not receive any compensation for travel or other expenses.

Do I qualify to deduct mileage for to and from the store? Thanks!
