  • Does the international response for the opening of the northwest passage bother you?

So after hundreds of years of burning fossil fuels and increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide, the arctic sea ice is melting to a record low. The international response? It looks something like this:

"Wow, there is up to 25% of the world's undiscovered fossil fuels lying under there for us to claim, and look! We can use this area as a major shipping lane, too!"

Does this seem a bit self-destructive? To capitalize on this newly exposed area of the earth to accelerate the process of what has caused it to occur in the first place? I'd like to hear your opinions.

  • Motorcycle fuel tank collapse-- does this happen often?

So it was 109 degrees today and my bike was in the sun... then I drove home to where it was only 70... later I went out to ride to school and my motorcycle's tank was crushed on the top, as if some great weight was put on it-- I removed the gas cap and heard a loud "whoosh" of air rushing into the tank.. apparently the tank was under vacuum after cooling off.

Now I have a degree in physics and understand why the tank got crushed because of the difference in air pressure, but isn't there supposed to be some kind of built-in safeguard against this sort of thing in modern motorcycles? Mine is a 2000 Yamaha V-star 650.

So if it is a problem with the motorcycle, what is it exactly, so I know what to tell the repair guy?

    Thanks!

  • What is the name and artist of this painting?

In the movie "Da Vinci Code" right near the end, Langdon is outside the Louvre with the thought in his mind "adorned in masters' loving art she lies".. and just then the camera flashes to a painting containing the face of a beautiful woman.. I'm wondering what the name and who is the artist of that painting..

(I'm assuming it is a painting in the Louvre)

    Thanks!

  • Why is my 1990 Dodge Grand Caravan overheating?

I have taken it to several repair shops, one of which installed a brand new radiator and the water pump was replaced not that long ago.. I suspect the thermostat, but none of them think that is the problem. The van tends to overheat when driving up hills or being stuck idling in traffic. The temperature gets obnoxiously high (like 3/4 or 4/5 toward the "H") under these conditions.

So what is causing this problem and how can it be repaired?

  • Help me with the plot of this fiction story I am writing?

So Gabe is having problems with girlfriend Rachel whom he distrusts because of her male friends. Gabe is also on medication for depression and begins hearing voices in his head from Autumn, the spirit of a dead girl (or it could just be his own imagination.. the reader must decide). Autumn tells Gabe of how she was murdered, and Gabe takes it upon himself to find the killer. He believes (and Autumn doesn't deny) that the killer is Rachel's friend Justin that Gabe is jealous of anyway.

I'd like this story to culminate in an attempted suicide by Gabe, the reconciliation of Gabe and Rachel, and an interesting plot twist that leaves the reader wondering if Autumn is indeed real or just his own imagination.

  • Why are there gas cylinders chained to some telephone poles?

Some telephone/power poles have compressed gas cylinders chained to them, as if they will be used at that location, but I can't figure out why an electrician would need compressed gas. Any ideas?

  • When are you giving up your religion?

When, after being in near-constant retreat since the advent of science, are you going to finally acquiesce to the realization that god does not exist per se, but rather is simply a manmade construct and an instrument of control over others?

A dangerous construct, at that! How many have killed in the name of Sir Isaac Newton versus how many have killed in the name of their own god?

  • How much rocket fuel is necessary to send Paris Hilton into low-earth orbit?

Assume the little waif has a mass of 50 kg and define "low earth orbit" to be the height above the surface of the earth such that her orbital period is 90 minutes.

Assume rocket fuel contains approximately 200 million Joules per gallon.

  • Is vacuum nothing?

People often say that space or vacuum is "nothing" but what they often forget is that it provides a medium for electromagnetic waves. So a vacuum is "something."

What about the concept of "nullspace?" (Forgive me, computer programmers). Nullspace would be the absence of vacuum; something through which electromagnetic waves could not travel.

I have not been smoking anything, honest.

  • A question about the doppler shift for light?

So I invent a space ship (with no windows) that can travel at 0.9999c. I aim it right towards the sun and take off. Assuming I can steer out of the way before I hit the sun, I would still be dead from the intense radiation poisoning from the visible light that was likely blue-shifted into the gamma-ray spectrum, right? Since gamma rays can penetrate metal objects, the fact that the spaceship had no windows doesn't help me.

But in the frame of reference of someone on earth, how would you explain how the normal, visible light from the sun caused me to die, since they would not have seen gamma rays entering my spaceship from their stationary reference frame?

  • Is it right for kids to be getting answers to their homework on here?

So many people ask homework questions on here. Many aren't even asking for a "why" or "how", but instead just want the "right answer." Is this a healthy practice? To me, it seems to be little more than an online "solutions manual" than a resource for learning.

As a parent, would you want your son or daughter to forego the 10 to 20 minutes thinking creatively about solving a problem (along with the intrisic reward of solving it themself), or would you want them on here chugging through their homework without using any brain cells?

  • What is a good home- or web-based business for me?

I am 35 years old, unmarried, and a high school physics teacher.

I have up to $155,000 to invest.

    I like working with computers.

I can program online database applications, but have no artistic or graphic design talents.

I like electronic gadgets and scientific equipment.

It would be nice if my business would somehow make the world a better place.

I would like my business to be like a hobby, but not something that sucks up all of my free time.

Ideally, I would like my business to generate at least $2000/month in profit.

    What do you think?

Assume you want to get as stinking rich as possible from this invesment with minimal risk.

  • Are 250mW laser pointers legal?

I found a website that sells green laser pointers that have a power rating of 250mW (for comparison, most cheapo laser pointers are 5mW). I saw a video of the beam from this pointer popping a balloon and setting a match aflame..

I was wondering if these are legal, and if I were to buy them in bulk and sell them on eBay if I would get myself into any sort of legal trouble!

    Thanks!

  • How can I get to work each day in an eco-friendly fashion?

So I work 11 miles from home, and the last 4 miles of the trip is all uphill. In addition, No buses service the last 4 miles of the trip either. I have to be at work each day by 7:00am. I live in Huntington Beach, a suburban city in Southern California in which there is no light rail or subway to be found.

I have been riding a motorcycle to do this, but wonder if there are more effective or environmentally friendly ways? I rode my bicycle once or twice but I felt fatigued the rest of the day. I walked the last 4 miles a few times but it takes wayyy too long.

  • Don't you hate when other answerers give you a thumbs down?

So you've taken up your own valuable time to answer somebody's question to the best of your ability on Yahoo answers and then when you go back to check up on the other answers, you notice that the last person who answered has indiscriminately given everyone else a "thumbs down" as if to say "all of your answers suck"

Who do these people think they are??? My answer didn't suck!

  • a fast-spinning earth?

The laws of physics dictate that if the earth were to make one revolution on its axis every 90 minutes or so, objects at the equator would be weightless. But what if the earth were to suddenly spin faster than that, say, once every hour. What would be the short- and long-term consequences of such rotation? Just curious!

  • Is this the WMD of the future?

The nuclear strong force holds together the nuclei of atoms. Imagine a weapon that consists of two beams, that when converged upon a target, disrupts this strong force, allowing the nucleus of each atom to "explode" under the coulombic repulsion between protons. If the beam was incident upon, say, 10^20 atoms (a relatively small area), imagine the destructive force produced by the combined synchronous explosion of atoms leading to intense heat, along with beta, neutron, and who knows what other kinds of radiation.

Is the nuclear strong force understood to a point as of yet that could lead to mankind's control over its influence? Should we all be worried?

  • Why does the media keep Al Qaida's websites secret?

Most news sources frequently report an "islamic militant website" as claiming such-and-such about the goings-on in Iraq, but I haven't seen any links anywhere for such a website.
