"Invitation" to NYU, high test scores but poor grades?
My brother-in-law (who's a few years younger than me) had been doing very poorly his junior year of high school. He usually tests very strongly, but this year his attendance was downright bad, and he consequently received mixed grades, half As and Bs, half Ds and Fs. By the time the year was over, he had missed around 30 days of school.
During the summer, my mother-in-law shared with me that he scored a 31 on his ACT, and subsequently received an "invitation" to attend NYU (they live in the middle of the country). I had never heard of anyone being invited to a college before, especially someone who wasn't in their senior year and had done poorly in their current school year. Is this normal?
When I asked the other family members about it, they responded that colleges aren't generally interested in grades (or attendance), but test scores.
Is any of that true? It was just something I was curious about.
3 AnswersOther - Education7 years agoIs it normal for your work to want you to come in with the flu?
Right now I work at a grocery store as a cashier. I've had the flu twice and a cold twice (with a fever, body ache, and sweats) in the last three months. Every last employee gets sick all together within 24 hours of each other. They've only let me call off for one day in these four instances (I had to on the worst day when the virus peaked, because I couldn't stand).
I'd really prefer not to come in and spread this to all of the customers, but they don't seem to want to give me a choice. Do you all find that this is normal with your places of work?
For what's it's worth, this bout of flu that I have currently comes with vomiting, coughing, a headache, body ache, and a fever. I gave them a call, and even with the vomiting, they're saying go ahead and come in.
1 AnswerInfectious Diseases8 years agoSong being played by concert in electronic commercial?
There was a commercial for some kind of electronic last year that had a person touch something floating in the air in an alleyway (the device they were advertising, I'm assuming), and he was temporarily teleported/transported to a concert.
The band playing had a female vocalist (not Paramore, but like Paramore). Does anyone know who that band was or what the commercial might have been for?
1 AnswerRock and Pop8 years agoSolution for getting around local delivery only?
There is a non-perishable food item that I'd very much like to buy, and it's only available for local grocery store delivery to people living in New York City. I live in West Virginia, and these sites will only delivery groceries un-packaged to local residences. Is there any solution possible to this that would allow me to buy and receive this item (short of driving to New York)?
Any kind of middle man, or some other potential way?
3 AnswersOther - Food & Drink8 years agoApartment maintenance neglecting to come fix central air?
We've had our apartment's maintenance man come to check out our central air about 4 or 5 times now. It's been working inefficiently for about two months, but we didn't push them to absolutely get something done about it until the heat rose to 100+ this past couple of weeks.
Our last electric bill was $360, and the house is about 80 degrees downstairs and 83-85 upstairs with the central air on all day (it never freezes up).
We've been waiting for the maintained man to show up since last Thursday. After waiting all Friday I called and was informed that maintenance does not work on the weekends. I called back today, after waiting all morning, and they told me they'd send him over.
It's now 6 PM, the office is close, and he still hasn't showed.
I've been calling "emergency maintenance" for the past half hour, but all I get is a busy signal for 10 seconds before it automatically hangs up.
I've tried to call an entirely separate HVAC man to come have a look for us, but apparently he can't, as he's not authorized to touch their units.
Is there anything we can do to force these people to fix this?
If it's not addressed soon, we are already planning on moving out, if it comes to that.
5 AnswersRenting & Real Estate1 decade agoOptions? $360 monthly electric bill.?
I was hoping to see if perhaps anyone had any helpful suggestions. My husband and I live in an apartment complex in Georgia. Now that the weather's warmer, we've found that our central air is very inefficient.
Running the air *all day long* (as in it doesn't shut off), our downstairs only manages to reach 75 degrees, and our upstairs bedrooms are close to 80. We've called maintained to make sure it's working properly, but both times he did essentially nothing besides take a 30 second look at it and tell us that the apartments don't retain cool air very well.
Any ideas on what we should do? We can't afford to keep paying a bill this high. I've suggested just turning it off completely to my husband and trying to save for a portable air condition for upstairs (our windows open sideways, so we can't get a window air conditioner) but he insists he won't be able to sleep through the night if we were to do that.
I don't know really know what else to do.
4 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs1 decade agoAnyone happen to have a Disney DVD or Blu-ray they haven't used the insert reward code for yet?
I'm desperate. I need 30 more points to get the item I want, and I'm trying to get it before it's sold out.
For those of you who aren't familiar with it, Disney Reward codes can be found on the insert they include inside the movies.
Immediate best answer and much appreciate goes to anyone who can give me one.
1 AnswerMovies1 decade agoDifficulty comprehending reversed actions and concepts?
My entire life I've had difficulty mentally following actions that are backwards (for example, when you reverse a car, and have to turn the wheel the opposite direction you want to go), or mentally keeping up with a video that's reversed, for example.
I was just wondering if this was due to some kind of mild learning disability or problem, or is it simply something I happen to have trouble with, and isn't related to anything specific?
I was just curious to see if anyone happened to know anything. I'm sure it's possible it's just some random thing I have difficultly with.
1 AnswerMental Health1 decade agoGroup of dogs ran through, killed cat. Is there anyone we can call/alert?
A group of about five dogs just ran through our apartment complex about 20 minutes ago. I'd never seen a stray dog in this area before, so our usually indoor-bound cat happened to be outside, hanging out with the neighborhood cat (the other cat's a stray, but the apartments complex has kind of adopted him and he wears a collar).
The dogs killed the other cat, and thank god we rushed outside and found our cat muddied, but otherwise alright.
Anyway, I was wondering if there's someone we should/could call about the dogs? It's late, so the humane society isn't open, but I plan to call them tomorrow. Apart from that, is there anything we should do or anyone we should alert?
6 AnswersDogs1 decade agoPrescription eyeglass expiration date?
I planned on ordering new glasses and lenses (as my current ones a quite broken) from a website online.
When my prescription was mailed to me by my former optometrist, it included an expiration date (which was in May of this year). What is the purpose of the expiration date? Does this mean that I need to go have my eyes reevaluated and can no longer use this prescription?
When I spoke to the woman who mailed it to me, she didn't mention anything regarding that, so I'd imagine that if that *was* the case, she'd have went ahead and told me the prescription was useless.
Can anyone clear this up for me? I'm a bit confused.
3 AnswersOther - General Health Care1 decade agoDoes Sea World still have animatronic dinosaurs?
Any of the Sea Worlds, really.
Sometime around 2000-20003 (I was about 12 or 13) we took about three trips to Sea World. One of my favorite attractions was the Jurassic Park-esque animatronic dinosaurs. Now that my guy and I are planning our trip, I can't seem to find any information (or even anything to inquire they were ever there at all) on them.
Are they still there at Sea World, or have they long since been gone?
4 AnswersAmusement Parks1 decade agoJulie Powell 9/11 comments.?
I just finished watching Julie and Julia (the film) and am now entertaining myself by reading feedback, not only on the movie, but on Julie Powell's book.
I haven't read it myself, so I'm very much wondering... Many, many people seem to have a lot to say in regards to what Julie Powell said concerning 9/11, how she disrespected the entire event/grieving families, etc.
So [as I sad] I'm very much wondering, since I can't seem to find it online,...
what exactly did she say in her book in regards to 9/11 that offended people so badly?
1 AnswerBooks & Authors1 decade agoCartoon. Boy inside robot, hiding?
Ironically, someone asked this exact question a few weeks ago and now I'm wondering the same thing. Unfortunately, I didn't comment or try to answer the question, so now I can't for the life of me find it again.
(And when I tried last week or so, Yahoo answers appears to have changed the search engine, so I wasn't able to search for it and find out how others answered it.)
ANYHOO.
Does anyone recall a cartoon (I believe it was a cartoon?) in which a boy got inside of a ... kind of like an armored robot, and the robot went amongst other robots with the boy inside, hiding him and keeping him a secret.
I remember the robot from the boy food (possible an apple?) and he 'decontaminated' it, or cleansed it, before giving it to the kid. Unfortunately, that's all I recall.
Does this ring any bells for anyone? I don't remember much, but I'm assuming this was something on either Nickelodeon or Disney sometime during the 90s.
3 AnswersMovies1 decade agoDo you automatically hold people you find out are in the Army or Marines to "hero" status?
Do you consider these people, without knowing anything of their lives besides their position in the military, "heroes"? Do you think they deserve special treatment?
If so, can you quote for me some of the things they've done to deserve such a status?
If not, can you quote for me some items they've done in order to not automatically deserve such a status?
9 AnswersMilitary1 decade agoSimple (hopefully) Lost question.?
Alright now.
I'm a pretty far lost/confused, so I was hoping one of you could possibly clear this up for me.
Are the flash-forwards [that deal with the "Oceanic Six"] that occur in Season 4 (which is as far as I've gotten at the moment) real? I mean, by the end of the series, is it definitive that they actually happenend?
Yes, no, or too complicated?
I know *vaguely* what occurs in the very end of Lost, although (as I said) I've only gotten as far as Season 4 as of yet. So perhaps I've just been confusing myself unnecessarily, but I as I'm watching this season, I keep thinking that the flash-forwards aren't real, or didn't actually happen based on what I've heard regarding the very end.
Anyway, if an explanation is too complicated (or contains too many spoilers), simply say "Too complicated.".
Somehow I doubt it's a simple yes or not answer. xD

It might be really obvious, or it might be really obsure. I honestly have no clue, but I'm assuming it belongs to a member of either a goth metal or goth rock bank (that's just my guess, though).
1 AnswerMusic & Music Players1 decade agoConfused. Would a dehumidifier or a humidifier benefit me?
I caught an article recently about... well. One or the other, I can't remember. Which sparked me to look up both dehumidifiers *and* humidifier. But now I've found that I'm a bit confused on which one (if either) would benefit me?
We live in Georgia, and although my husband says the humidity is high here, I haven't noticed it at all.
However, I've woken up with sore throats every morning (until I can get a drink) for years now.
In addition, I suffer horribly from pollen allergy/hay-fever, I have small wheezing spells, and I get nosebleeds fairly frequently.
We also have two cats, although I don't think animal dander affects me much (thank god).
So would either of these machines help me a bit? I'd like to be able to wake up in the morning without my throat feeling like it has cotton in it, although I'm completely confused at to which one I might (possibly!) need.

Just asked my dad if he remembered it and he asked me if I "was sure it wasn't a dream". :P
So anyway. Does anyone here remember or know the name of a movie in which a very, very large boat of some kind crashes straight into a city (because it can't be stopped)?
