Can emotions burn calories?
Recently I had a bad day at work. This ultimately built up to an unfortunate angry outburst later (thankfully out of the workplace) that seemed to completely exhaust me once the rage had worn off. The next day I felt really exhausted, as if I hadn't eaten enough recently. It made me wonder if perhaps emotions, or emotional outbursts, affected caloric use in your body, causing you to burn through them suddenly or slow down their consumption. Could anyone shed some light on this question?
1 AnswerOther - Health8 years agoContacts irritating my right eye only?
Something odd has been happening with my contacts lately. For some reason, my right eye and that eye only has been irritated by my contacts. It doesn't matter if I switch them, clean them, or replace them with a new pair, always my right eye, and only on the right side of the eye. The irritation doesn't actually hurt or itch too much until I start to mess with it, it's just red on a small portion of my eye. What is causing this?
3 AnswersOptical8 years agoHow long can my old apartment withhold my security deposit?
I live in Houston, Texas, and have been a renter for two years now. On May 10th, I moved out of my old apartment. I had a wonderful time there, and had no problems with the management company and found the staff there to be reasonable and polite. I had no problems with anything concerning them and paid my rent on time, every time, with the exception of one month where I accidentally shorted them $19. Because the amount was so small they didn't charge me a late fee and just had me write them a separate check. On the month I was to move out, I accidentally paid my rent in full instead of the pro-rated amount, and they informed me that the extra amount would be combined with my security deposit and used to repair any damages, clean the apartment, etc. then the rest would be mailed to me in a check.
It has been almost two months since then. I have repeatedly called them about it and they have said the check should arrive within 60 days. They sent a notice through the mail to my new place giving me the amount I am owed and what the rest was used for (cleaning the carpet and the like) and I was owed $423.
On the ninth of this month, it will have been 60 days. In my most recent call to them they told me they only just sent it out on the 28th of June! I'm not entirely sure I should believe them this time, since they told me they mailed it out once already.
I'd hate to have to get more aggressive about this since I enjoyed their service up till now, but I'm tired of waiting and every day it isn't here I get angrier with them. What kind of action can I take if it isn't here by the 9th?
3 AnswersRenting & Real Estate8 years agoWhat effect would Mach 3 have on the human body?
Theoretically, if a human body (on its own) was traveling at a speed of Mach 3, what effects would that kind of speed have on that human? What kind of pressure/temperatures would be involved? Is there anything that might be necessary or helpful to protect a human body traveling at that speed?
5 AnswersPhysics8 years agoIs this unconstitutional, or do people hate accountability?
http://news.yahoo.com/court-police-dna-swabs-arres...
The above article sets the tone for my question. After reading the comments section of this article, I notice a huge amount of people don't like the idea of their DNA being taken upon arrest. My question is why? Why really? Police take your prints, which they can use to find out if you've committed a crime, why is this such an issue?
In the article, a man is caught on rape charges because he was arrested for something else and had his DNA taken. By the sound of it, this is the kind of thing we should be doing, making sure than suspects who have left DNA at the scene of an unsolved crime are held accountable.
A few years ago in my hometown we had red light cameras set to be on every major street corner. But due to public backlash, the project was scrapped. A year ago I was hit by a car in a major intersection and the driver ran, and still hasn't been found. If those cameras were up, they may have been caught.
What I'm saying is it seems to me, more often than not, people hide behind the Fourth Amendment to ditch responsibility for their actions. They don't want to be held accountable for their actions, so they cry fascism when things like this happen. As a result, innocent people are left without any justice.
But I realize I might not see all the angles, so that's my question. Is it so wrong to take DNA from the arrested, or do people really just hate the idea of having to own up to their mistakes? I don't want to hear slippery slope arguments like "well this is just where they'll start" or "give them an inch and they'll take a mile", because those arguments are bunk. I want to hear legitimate reasons why this is unconstitutional if you're against this, or legitimate reasons on why you're for it if you are for it.
3 AnswersCivic Participation8 years agoIs this discrimination?
Recently an Abercrombie and Fitch executive stated that "we don't want to see fat people wearing our brand". This started a discussion between myself and my coworkers about whether or not this was discrimination. My stance is that it isn't, a company in a capitalist, free-market society is allowed to sell any product they want, and if they exclude potential customers for any reason then they lose that customer base. Their stance is it's just discrimination, plain and simple. Not making clothes for large people and saying that they won't is discriminating against fat people, and there need to be laws in place against such business practices.
Now, I'm a skinny guy, and I know that if I walked into a Casual Male XL store, and pointed out a shirt to a store associate and said "I want that shirt", they might say "I don't think that's your size." I might then say "I don't care. I want to buy that shirt, and I have money." I know I could buy the shirt regardless, even if I was dissatisfied with the fit later. I get the feeling the same could be said of a large person buying from Abercrombie and Fitch.
But all of this is digression. My question is:
While the exec's comments could easily be considered discriminatory, is it discrimination to choose to sell a product that not everyone can use?
3 AnswersSociology8 years agoWhere should I start in The New 52?
I've read quite a few comics on and off occasionally, but now that I have a shiny new kindle and a little extra money, I think I'd like to jump into The New 52, specifically Batman and related characters like Nightwing, Batwoman and Red Robin (I'm also somewhat interested in the Super family). My question is where should I start? I looked it up on Amazon and there are three different Batman comic volumes starting at issue #1, and knowing how convoluted comics can get if you haven't kept yourself up to date on what's going on in their world at the time, I'd rather not jump into a volume where they reference recent events I have no clue about.
Also, is The New 52 really a place where new readers can jump on, or is DC just saying that? Are there going to be a bunch of references to events before The New 52, or are they really giving new readers a chance not to have their minds turned to soup by their usual convoluted storylines?
3 AnswersComics & Animation8 years agoHow do I attach a patch to leather?
I'm trying to attach a leather patch to a leather vest, but there's a catch. I'm trying to do this in such a way that the patch is removable, and doesn't damage or otherwise affect the vest when it comes off. No sticky residue or holes, or things like that.
Any suggestions?
Do It Yourself (DIY)9 years agoWhy do contacts degrade over time?
While there are some kinds of contacts that are meant to be long-term, why do disposables and other soft contacts say they aren't for permanent use? What about them makes them unable to be used after so long? Do they simply have a natural half-life, or is constant wear what wears them out?
2 AnswersOptical9 years agoAs a gamer, what internet provider should I go with?
Up until recently I haven't had any issues with my wireless internet provider, but since I moved I've noticed that it likes to cut out, disconnect me, and generates lag when I'm playing games some times.
So rather than put up with any more of this, I've decided I'd like to upgrade. To a hardline connection, to be precise. My question is, which providers would you recommend to me, and which would you advise I steer clear of?
Keep in mind, customer service isn't a huge deal for me, as long as the internet goes up, stays up, and doesn't give me issues.
6 AnswersVideo & Online Games9 years agoMy apartment is threatening to throw me out because of one missed payment! What can I do?
My roommates and I were late paying our rent this month, and I came home yesterday to find a notice posted on the door that we had 48 hours to vacate. This is the first time we've ever been late paying our rent, and the new management refused to take my debit card as payment, which is why it was late in the first place.
On the day we were going to pay our rent, I gave my roommate my debit card and asked him to go pay since I was leaving before the office opened. He said he had work and would have to get in and get out quick, and I told him that should be fine. When I get out of city limits, he calls me and tells me they refused to take my card since that's the new management's policy. He has to go to work and my other roommate is already at work, and I can't turn around and go home, so we end up being charged a late fee.
Now on top of all this mess, they're telling us we have two days to get out. This is the first time we've been late paying, and this can't be right. I've considered that it may just be their policy to post such notices on late-payer's doors to prompt them to pay faster, but if they're serious, what can I do? How am I protected? How can I defend myself from this?
6 AnswersRenting & Real Estate10 years agoMaking a costume, what fabric would be best?
I'm trying to make a cape for a renaissance fair costume (full cape, like a cloak, not a half cape) and since that's going to be hanging close to the ground, I realized I'd need a material that can withstand being dragged around for hours. I want it to be durable and look good, and all I can think of is leather, but that's expensive. I wanted to get some second opinions, so tell me what you think.

11 AnswersSingles & Dating10 years agoHow can I bust into the localized anime business here in the states?
I just wanted to know how I might get somehow involved with the anime business here in America, like maybe writing reviews professionally or voice acting or something similar that might get my foot in the door to a place like Funimation or Sentai Filmworks. Who should I talk to, where should I go?
I'm re-posting this since I didn't get much help last time.
1 AnswerComics & Animation10 years agoMy eyes burn, and it's hard to figure out exactly what causes it.?
Lately my eyes have been burning for no apparent reason, and this happens throughout the day. The changes I feel may be responsible for it are:
New job; I have a commute that forces me to walk from bus to bus in the sun for extended periods of time to get home, not to mention I sit in front of a computer for extended periods of time at work.
It's summer; may have something to do with allergies I didn't know I had.
There are no coupled symptoms with it, just the burning eyes. It's very light, but still noticable.
2 AnswersOptical10 years agoWhat's a good action-based MMO?
I'd like to find a good action-based MMO to play so I can get a little experience with online gaming, but I really want to avoid any shooters. Nothing against them, but I like playing shooters alone since everyone I seem to find online there is a jerk. Like I said though, I'd prefer an action-based game as opposed to an MMORPG like WOW.
I know this really limits my options, but that's why I'm asking, because I can't find anything because of these restraints. Anyone have any ideas?
6 AnswersVideo & Online Games1 decade agoI want to become a paramedic. What kind of things should I look into to pursue this?
Pretty much what it states above. I'm currently taking a program towards earning an EMSP related degree at my community college, but I'd like to get a head start by researching websites or books that may give me a head start on my classes. Any suggestions?
1 AnswerOther - Education1 decade agoHow can I live out my ideal life?
I find myself getting a bit introspective lately, now that I'm approaching my 2nd decade of life. I'm wondering more and more what I want to do with myself, how I want to be able to look back on my life when I'm older. I've come to a few conclusions, but they only spawn more questions.
I'm currently in school attempting to get an associates degree in emergency medical services (paramedics) because I've always wanted to be kind of a hero, rushing around saving people. But even as I work towards paying my way through school, I don't feel like it's enough. I don't feel like I'm really doing anything fulfilling.
What I want is to be able to look back when I'm 60 and say I've lived a life no one else could have lived. That my life was my own, and no one else could replicate it. I wanna go around the world, meet interesting people, learn things from everywhere I can, adventure a little, you know?
But such are the dreams of the rich.
I've thought about waiting till I was older for stuff like that, but I don't think I'll be able to. If I get married, have a kid, get a house, I'll be tied down. I wanna go out and do things while I'm still young and strong and able to grow. While I still have the freedom to. But I just can't see a viable option to do it.
So I'm looking for some suggestions. Is there any group or organization that may be able to help with that? Maybe some kind of program?
