Swimming is the best really because it works all parts of the body. If you're not that into water, then any cardio. Running is probably the second best, the key is to do it frequently and not to break routine.
If you're looking for exercises to concentrate on particular parts of your body, then;
sit-ups and leg raises for the stomach,
squats for the thighs and hips,
push ups for arms, etc.
But for all round weight loss, definitely swimming or running. As long as you're tiring yourself out and getting out of breath then you're fine!

Walk a whole lot more for very long distances, at least 5kms a day, find a sport to play every weekend, a sport that allows you to use your whole body, something like tennis or squash or basket ball, for 30mins to an hour. Do this for a month and u will see the difference.

Strength training for your legs and back will burn calories fast. They are the biggest muscle groups in the body, and they burn the most calories while healing. If you're not so interested in muscle, just weight loss I'd recommend doing workouts for 40 mins or longer. After 40 mins of exercise our bodies go catabolic. Meaning our bodies start burning our mass (fat and muscle) for energy. But the more muscle you have, the more calories you'll burn. Even while sitting on the couch and sleeping.
