Does anyone have a good research question for my psychology literature report module next semester?
Next semester I am doing a module that involves choosing my own topic to investigate. I have to come up with a research question to answer. The essay is 6000 words long. The topics I am interested in are Depression, Schizophrenia, Smoking, Obesity, Body Esteem/Body Dissatisfaction, and Eating Disorders. I have 3 possible research questions so far but I would like some more just incase none of these are suitable. I want it to be original and I want something whereby there is plenty of available literature that will help me answer the question. Serious suggestions only please! Thanks!

Does obesity in teenagers have an impact on their academic achievement?

Though looking at other's ideas is helpful in brainstorming a topic, it is really important to grapple with the question on your own. You could ask the professor for some sample questions so that you can see models of good research questions.
The reason I suggest you grapple with finding your own, is that the question will eventually be rather narrow in scope, and it should be something of intense interest to you; otherwise the research will get really boring, and the literature search will be a drag.
The very exercise of coming up with a topic is part of an important learning process. If you need help with the process, ask for help from someone knowledgeable. But don't shortchange your learning, or you will be shortchanging yourself.

I'll just go straight into the questions by the topics you have listed: Depression: What age group is more affected by this mental illness? What ethnic groups are more prone to this mental illness? What locations within the US, have seen an increase in this diagnosis within the last two years? Schizophrenia: How does it make the mind so unstable? How many people within America have been diagnosed with this disease clinically? How many hospitals within America, specialize in this mental illness? Smoking: Currently, there are commercials focusing in on the "abstract long term affects of nicotine usage," do they conduct controlled survey groups prior to placing these ads? Currently, it is documented that X amount of teens are becoming aggressive smokers, who is researching this information? Currently, it is being advertised that women who become pregnant might have a great chance of having a child with certain abnormalities, is there research information out there that proves this to be true? Obesity: Who does it affect? Who are the most likely people to become obese? Who has been able to develop a stratgy that targets these people more prone to becoming obese? Body Esteem/Body Dissatisfaction: Does society play a major role in how individuals depict themselves as supposedly being? Do males vs. females have it easier? Does the food intake (according the the food pyramid), have adverse affects on inviduals? Eating Disorders: What is the gender more likely to have an eating disorder? Are men becoming more sensitive toward societal norms of having the "perfect body?" When did eating disorders first become noticed as a mental illness? Good luck and be Safe...(smiles)

link between depression and smoking ??
link between racial groups and body esteem and how it varies with gender and developes throughout life??
i suggest u build up on someone elses work since this is just a 6000 word project. u would either narrow down urs or do ur research in ur area for example on campus and then compare the previous results with ur results.
if the research was done long ago u can also see how the situation has changed over time.

Comparing literature from Victorian or Shakespearian times to popular literature today, how do women's body image of themselves change over time?
Can we say for certain that psychological diagnoses of women of other eras would have stayed the same if the we were able to use the same symptoms that appear in modern day society?
How does hysteria compare with schizophrenia?

I'm sure low self esteem has plaqued mankind for ages, but with the advent of the high tech we have now, and the fast foods, etc., are we becoming a fatter, more isolated, greedier, "look out for number 1" world, and where are we going to end up in ten or twenty years?

i'd combine a couple of your areas of interest like 'can stopping smoking cause depression?' or 'to what extent are eating disorders caused by body dissatisfaction?' (which you can also look at the individuals need to control their life in some way as an alternative to the body dissatisfaction theory).
good luck with it x

I really like Lara^mt's suggestion of Body Esteem by Racial group... that would be interesting I think. Depression could be interesting as well, rated by several categories and reoccurances, other associated illnesses ... although it is a topic that has been done many times, I know.

Yes, you said it yourself, you have to choose your own topic, so in all honesty, why do you post the question? You sound like a really clever girl and I think, LOL, u r not gonna like this, but you are just feeling lazy. BUT, on the other hand, you get a good suggestion on here, you get a great result, BUT, would you be really happy with yourself (really happy) knowing that your success is founded on an idea that was not yours?
Why don't you ask the question: Why is it that when one has the b*lls to do something about corruption, that one is stamped as being insane? (LOL, they(the police...LMAO) think this because, they think one must be insane to dare to stand up and to uphold one's own beliefs, with all the their (the baddies)threats or/and "connections", if you know what I mean?)

there is a girl in my class and she cuts her self.in the arm . she never wants to talk about it and i don't want her to hurt herself but anyways i think that will be a good thing to write about cuz it's serious and you could say that people who do this, they do maybe cuz they're depressed or have family problems or boy troubles you really never know but i think that will be a good topic because there's plenty to write on that subject. you know what i mean

I choose Body Consciousness. No one is satisfied with the way they look, from about the age of 6. Why is that? Could you interview kids?
(If we couldn't see ourselves in mirrors or pictures or on film, would we care?)
