HELP!!!!! New kitten in the house!!!!!?
We recently saved a tiny kitten from the streets. It is cute as a buttom. But it is a hard headed little thing. Every time me and my kids set down to eat it does everything in it's power to get in our food. We have a small rolled up piece of paper that we spat it with and we tell him no but that doesn't work. Bello, my other cat, that I have had for 3 1/2 years has never done anyting like that before. I am on new grounds and I don't know what to do.
Also, he is not starving. He is fed veryyyyy well.
Yes, we have had him checked out by a vet. We have had him for about a month now.

The best way to teach the animal...and I know it may sound mean is to once the cat does it say no and swat it then when he does it again, take him and lock him in the bathroom. That's what we had to do with my kitten and after about a weeks of going in the bathroom when dinner came around he doesnt even move when we sit at the table. He probably will cry but eventually that stops too...hang in there kittens use their cutness as an aliby! hahah

Your kitten may have survived on the street, or in his previous home, by being a hard-headed stubborn little thing. First, has he been to the vet? That's important for any new kitten. Second, please don't swat the kitten with paper. It's ineffective (as you noticed) and can produce a fearful animal. If the kitten is always hungry (for his own food as well as yours), then he probably needs more food. If he's developed the bad habit of eating table food, then you'll have to unlearn it, but not by swatting. . .first, make sure the kitten is fed before you sit down to eat. Then, if he gets up on the table, say "no" quietly, but firmly, and put him on the floor. If he gets up again, repeat, and if it happens again, place him in a separate room while you eat. Another option is to use a plant sprayer(water only) to deter him. It's not meant to be punishment, but instead to interrupt his bad behavior. Remember, NEVER, ever reinforce the unwanted behavior by feeding him at the table. And, make sure the kids don't either! Also, kittens are notoriously high energy animals. He needs playtime and activity to burn off some of those high spirits.

He is not starving now but may have been on the streets. If this happens to very young kittens it often alters their eating habits and attitudes for life. I small squirt bottle with plain water shot at him a few times may do the trick. Kitties DON"T like water in the face. It is a very good over all training tool. Just make sure that the kitten does not get soaked and chilled.

As aggravating as it may be, everytime the kitty does this, take it to it's food bowl. This little thing was probably starving on the street. Once it realizes that there is food always available, it will calm down. You can also, at your suppertime, make the kitties food a little more appealing if you are using dry food by placing it in the microwave for about 15 seconds. This will help bring the aroma out a little more and your kitty will be more inclined to eat it's food.

STOP HITTING YOUR CAT!!!!!
THIS DOES NOT WORK!!!!
IT DOES NOT UNDERSTAND WHY YOU ARE DOING IT AND IT WILL NOT SOLVE
YOUR PROBLEM. It does not matter if it is a little tap or a BIG whack! It is the action that will
cause more damage to this cat!
I am very glad that you saved a kitten but you are not doing it any justice by hitting it. Cats are not
dogs! Your cat need you to urn ITS trust, not the other way around. Your kitten is testing you to
see how far you will go. Hitting it will get you NO WHERE FAST!
THIS IS WHAT THE PROBLEM IS:
Your cat is not used to humans. If you got it from the streets it probably has not had a lot of human
contact. You need to train. you do not train cats by hitting him. You train them by rewarding them!
Food is the best reward for a cat.
If your cat is trying to get your food, try feeding your cat while you are eating. It is okay to let
your cat build up a hunger. Playing is a great way to build up a hunger! Figure out what your cat
likes to eat, then figure out what the little guy with go BAT Crazy for. If it loves it food it will not
want yours.
EXAMPLE: My cat Abby likes canned cat food but will do back flips for turkey! When she used to
jump on the table during our dinner, I would feed her in the other room. She always had her toys
and food with her. It gave her a sense of security and something to do while we ate. Eventually, I
moved her closer and closer to the dinning room table. She eventually moved into the same room
with us and never jumped on the table again!
Keeping your cat occupied while you are eating is also a good idea. TOYS!!! Lots and Lots of
toys! Toys with out Cat Nip would be better. You do not want to over excite your kitten.
Your other cat never jumped on the table because it probably did not have the "hard knock life"
that this one did. Your kitten is used to fending for itself on the street. Do think that would stop just
because it had a home? It is an animal, not a human. It doesn't understand that it is safe. It still
thinks it is every MAN for itself! Your kitten has to be acclimated to humans. It is not a thing that
will happen over night. It will take a lot of time, trust and love to do so.

You need to confine kitty in another room while you are eating. This way he'll never get into the habit of eating human food or beging at the table. As he matures, he'll mellow down and he will quit begging since as you say, he is well fed. Meanwhile, just like what you'd do with tiny toddlers, keep kitty away from temptation and close all avenues for him developing bad habits. :)

We rescued a cat from a barn once and it did the same thing. All we did was put it in a kitty crate every time we went to eat, and it got the idea eventually that if it wanted to stay out of the crate, that it shouldn't bother us when we eat!

Go get you a sprayer like you would use to spray flowers and clean it real good, put some cold water in it then use that..That should work..I have Bobtails(MANX is the breed) and trust me they are like tigers that just doesnt care how much you tell them no they are going to do wutever they wish sometimes..Goodluck with the kitty..If this doesnt work let me know..

First off..take him to the vet if you have not done so. Bringing an unchecked animal into a home is a real bad idea. Abandoned cats can carry parasites and disease that your other can can get. He will need shots and a check up.
In the meantime, keep him in another room.

Maybe a spray bottle with water in it would help? Of course this will only work if the cat doesn't like water. Good luck.... glad to hear you rescued a little kitty!!
