My 3 year old (overweight) cat smells like urine - she also seems to be licking her behind too much?

Go to the vet it could be diabetes. I'd say a urinary tract blockage but that is more common in males. Either way you should totally adjust your cats diet. Too many people allow their pets to be overweight. They are just like people in this sense, its really unhealthy. If the cat has diabetes it would explain the excessive urination and the vet may put the cat on insulin. If its a blockage they will probably suggest prescription cat food that is "low ash".

Cystitis is an inflamation if the bladder; it is not usually associated with bacterial infection in cats. There is a greatly increased frequency of urination, with a good deal of licking around the rear end. Spots of blood may be passed through with the urine.

I would suggest immediate veteranary attention - because it could also be a kidney infection/ failure, a urinary blockage, or some other urinary infection.

Overweight cats are more prone to bladder problems, along with ten thousand other things. So to avoid further weight-related problems, she'll need to go on a diet - and this just happens to be my area of expertise!

You can buy special diet foods, which is preferable to just cutting down on current foods, as the animal will just be hungry, not be getting enough nutrients, and you'll end up giving in to her cries for food! I run weight clinics, and use Hills r/d for all my patients - brilliant stuff, comes in dry and wet form. You feed for the weight you want your cat to be - usually about 4kg (8.8lb). This is about 1 can of r/d per day plus 10g r/d biscuits.

Anyway, get kitty to the vets, sure it will be fine - and email me if you want more help/advice with dieting!

licking her butt - are you deworming her on a regular basis like you should be? if not, she probably has worms.

about the smell and peeing - you need to take her to the VET. It could be a million things.

it might have to do with her being overweight.

being overweight is extremely unhealthy for cats for a milion different reasons and can cause a million different problems - including kidney and bladder problems.

not only did you allow her to become overweight, but you are allowing her to stay that way by not doing anything. this is called neglect.

reduce her food portion size immediately, and do NOT give her any snacks. If you are not prepared to look after your cat properly, you need to give it to someone who can.

all of these symptoms sounds like she is in heat, or pregnant or both, might be she is hanging around a Tom cat,(they spray ) or................

She could have a urinary tract infection or worse. You should probably have a vet check her out, rather than guess. That is what I would do.

Hey, My male cat was doing the same thing, but he was laying around being really lethargic and peeing on things, he had a urinary blockage, there are like peices of sand in the urine when this happens, and it can be deadly... I'd suggest getting her checked out. (-;

Take her to the vet if you have a concern. It could be a number of things and sometimes time is of the essence....she should be properly diagnosed by a professional if there is a serious health concern. Hoe this helps.

You should take her to the vet. It shounds like she could have a urinary track infection. If left untreated it could lead to kidney failure.
