My cat doesn't like dry food?

I've had him for 9 months now and at first he ate only a little dry food, but prefers wet. He was used to wet food at the shelter. Now I don't see him eating any dry food.

I'm mixing dry with wet, but he still is having a hard time with it. I have tried mixing broth or water and he just sucks up the liquid. I don't give him gravy wet foods for he does the same thing.

Please don't suggest taking away all wet food.

I give him Felidae dry, Nutro Natural Choice and Soup for Cat Lovers Sole. Any other dry food that would entice him to eat it, or any other suggestions. He needs to eat dry for his teeth.

Actually, I think that considering the brands you're using your cat is better off with canned food as his primary diet. Those are good brand choices. Against common wisdom, eating dry food does not clean their teeth, in fact it can gum up and sticks to their teeth in the back causing problems in some cats. Cats don't chew like people do, so the dry food is just crunched until it's small enough to swallow, not chewed.

Raw meat diets are actually the healthiest for cats, but I know most people, like me, are too busy to deal with that, so I feed a combination of dry and wet foods. I would continue to stir in a small amount of dry food into the canned until the cat is eating it, then gradually add more dry until you have a balance you're happy with.

No he doesn't. Dry food doesn't clean the teeth.

If you're concerned about dental health, there are other things you can do.

But if you insist on feeding dry anyway, see the list of better choices. Don't try the new Friskie's dental food - it's hideous! The first ingredient is corn. If there's any actual good meat in there, I'll eat it myself!

EDIT: I see you've already chosen some of the better brands, so that's good! But see the list of other good dry foods. Also check into Wellness Core or Nature's Variety Instincts.

Most cats prefer canned food because it has a stronger smell and often tastes better. He might simply be used to canned and not like dry food, but it's also possible he has dental problems. The first thing I'd do would be have a veterinarian check his teeth.

My two guys prefer Purina Chicken with Rice and I believe I've tried everything on the market. I have to say though, that some folks don't realize that dry food goes stale when left in air - (think of crackers) - it needs to be kept fresh and it needs to be changed often; make sure the bag is as airtight as possible and sealed either by rubber band or clip.

I only buy dry with at least the first ingredient being real food like chicken, turkey, tuna, etc. Forget the by-products and 'meal.' Hope this helps the two of you - bon appetite!

Perhaps he doesn't like the particular brand of dry food you're giving him. Try a different brand of dry food. Don't stop the wet food all together but maybe try giving a little less.

Dry cat food actually does very little to clean cat's teeth. The best thing for cat's teeth is getting them to chew on raw bones, or small natural chews marketed for dogs.

Your cat will do very well on a canned food diet. Canned, is usually better for most cats anyway. You can also try Natures Variety Raw frozen foods. My cat does very well on it.

    Good luck

  • The cat is spoiled. You are the pet and the cat is the owner and I know you said not to say it, but just give him dry food and when his tummy is rumbling he will eat it. Will he eat cat treats? They are some that are good for their teeth.

It's a total myth that dry food is good for a cats teeth. If you ate hard cookies all day, would it be good for your teeth?

Can food is better for your cat...feed it what it wants.

Smart cat. Canned food is better nutritionally than dry. You can brush your cats teeth.
