does my cat need a buddy?

my cat used to be a stray, i adopted him and caught him up on all of his shots etc. and moved into an apartment. once he finally got used to the place he did good for a bit, but I work all day and only have about 5 hours in the evening. From the minute i get home to when i close the doors and lock him out of the bedroom he walks around meowing and he seems bored. I keep him out of the bedroom because otherwise he just meows and bothers me and i don't get any sleep. He starts up right away when I get up in the morning too. He has plenty of food and water accessible at all hours. I'm wondering if he's bored and if getting another cat would help keep him entertained? He's very mild mannered and non-aggressive around other cats, even males (he's fixed).

It sounds like he could use some company, a lonely cat can be a pest. A local shelter is a great place to find him a buddy. Before bringing another cat into the house you will need to make sure that they are tested for HIV and leukemia. You sound like a responsible person you should be applauded!

I would get him another cat. Even though a lot of people believe that cats are very solitary and independent this does not hold true for all cats. I recently brought home two cats. The younger one is very needy and needs constant attention. I have noticed that if sometimes the larger cat gets into the yard and I am also outside and he is left alone in the house he will start meowing and pacing around the house. He sounds so sad and pathetic. He never acts this way as long as either me or the big cat is around. So yes, I would agree with you, he is probably lonely. Just make sure if you do get another cat that it is non aggressive towards other males. Both of mine are males and they get along great and they were not from the same litter.

Well it sounds like your cat is lonely. Are you giving him plenty of personal attention when you are home? Not just being there but playing with him and petting him. My cat talks, alot, but whining and crying is saying that he needs something. It may be a good idea to get him a buddy and I would recommend an adult. They likely won't get along at first, but should warm up to eachother soon.

Cats do best when adopted in pairs, especially if you're out of the house a lot. Despite their loner ways they get depressed when they're alone too much. Cats that are depressed sometimes self mutilate.

I think that getting him a friend could help a lot. but you also have to remember there is twice the vet bills also. But locking him out of the bedroom? Maybe that is just making thing worse

It seems like you have no time for this cat. You go to work and then when you are going to sleep at night you lock him out. Even though we are human put yourself in his shoes. Getting another cat might help but, you have to let them meet first. Does your cat want to be the only animal in the house? If so you might not want to get another animal.
