If abortion is murder, why does the Bible tell us differently?

Exodus 21-25 says that if you hit a pregnant woman and she has an abortion as a result, you should pay a fine, and that is that. It is only when the woman is hurt too (dies, becomes unfertile, etc.) that it becomes a "life for life" murder case.

"if men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life, Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe."

Update:

Look at Rosie murder the English language.

Update 2:

"lookingforanswers" - the coming of Jesus does not mean you can chuck the OT away. I think he even says something to that effect. He was a Jew, you know?

Update 3:

Lion of Judah: I think you pasted the wrong copy buffer. That didn't answer my question AT ALL.

The Bible was written much before the penal codes and the criminal procedure laws were framed.

The Lord had this to say to the prophet Jeremiah: "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, beforeyou were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations." Jeremiah 1:5

The Lord stated that even before he formed Jeremiah in the womb he knew what kind of man he was. While you are in the womb God knows you, he already has plans for you on this Earth, he created you with love and care. No person has a right to take that away from somebody.

Those who take a life unjustly will face the wrath of God at their judgement.

"But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and liars, their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death." Revelation 21:8

First, most Christians I know don't believe Jews go to hell. Second, people who "dig the elephant with the arms" are called Hindus. Third, a person doesn't have to be a Christian to oppose abortion. Congrats! It's not often I find myself defending Christians; thank you for adding some variety into my day.

"If her fruit depart from her" does not mean the baby died; it lived but was born prematurely.

"Any mischeif" refers to the death of either the mother or the child, thus life for life.

This passage actually shows that Jehovah views the death of an unborn human the same as he does one who has already been born.

NOTE this from Exodus 21:22-25 of the NWT: "And in case men should struggle with each other and they really hurt a pregnant woman and her children do come out but no fatal accident occurs, he is to have damages imposed upon him without fail according to what the owner of the woman may lay upon him; and he must give it through the justices. But if a fatal accident should occur, then you must give soul for soul, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, branding for branding, wound for wound, blow for blow."

The argument from the pro-choice crowd is based upon a mis-translation.

The hebrew word used for bringing forth a child there is for a live birth, not a still birth - there is another word they use for bringing forth a still born child. The hebrew used in Exodus here is ONLY used for live birth.

If he causes her to bring forth her child but there is no serious injury - he gets fined.

If there is injury to the woman or the child - it is eye for eye, tooth for tooth, life for life.

This passage in Exodus strongly supports the pro-life side.

I love that it's an accident when in the Bible and means nothing today. "If men STRIVE, and hurt a woman with child..." seems pretty purposeful to me!!!

It's interesting all the ways one can interpret the Bible to fit their own perception of right and wrong.

Many people will refuse to accept God's word as a standard by which they should live and make decisions. That is their right to reject it. Nevertheless, I offer the following as reasons for not having abortions.

What is growing in the womb of the woman is alive.

    Even one-celled creatures are alive.

What is growing in the woman is more than a one-celled creature.

The nature of the life in the woman is human.

It is the product of human DNA; therefore, its nature, its essence, is undeniably human.

Because it is human in nature, if left to live, it will result in a fully developed human baby.

Humans are humans not because they have feet, hands, walk vertically, and speak, etc. Not all people have feet, hands, can walk, and speak. They are humans because of their nature, their essence, not because of physical abilities or disabilities.

A person born without arms and legs is still human.

A person who cannot speak is still human.

A person in a coma, helpless, unaware, unmoving, is still human by nature and it is wrong to murder such a person.

What is growing in the womb does not have the nature of an animal, a bird, or a fish. It has human nature.

If it is not human in nature, then what nature is it?

If it is not human in nature, then does it have a different nature than human?

If so, then from where did it get this different nature since the only sources of its nature are human egg and and human sperm?

Objection: A cell in the body has human DNA and is alive and it is okay to kill it. So, it doesn't make any difference with a fetus.

Though it is true that a cell in the human body has DNA and is alive, a cell (muscle cell, skin cell, etc.) has the nature of being only what it is -- not a human. In other words, a muscle cell is by nature a muscle cell. A skin cell is by nature a skin cell. But, the fertilized egg of a human is by nature that very thing which becomes a fully developed human. Its nature is different than that of muscle or skin cells because these do not grow into humans. Therefore, a human cell and a human egg are not the same thing.

A fertilized human egg has the nature of human development and it is alive. This is not so with a muscle or skin cell.

To abort the life, which is human in nature, is to kill that which is human in nature.

Therefore, abortion is killing a life which is human by nature.

Where, then, does the mother get the right to kill the human within her?

A question for those who believe in abortion and that the life in the womb is not human. Is it okay to take a fertilized egg between a man and a woman and place it in the womb of a dog?

If you say no, then why? If it is not human then it doesn't matter, right?

If you say no because it will become a human then you admit that it has human nature and is alive. If it is human in nature and alive, then you do not have the right to abort it.

If you say it is alright, why is it okay?

...well I s'ppose, by the fetus eye for fetus eye rule, if men could get pregnant, then a guy who hurt a pregnant woman and killed her baby would be forced to get pregnant, wait until the respective month, then get his baby killed.

But since it's not possible - fine.

Ah, abortion & murder? I think that's called teasing.

The falcon punch is often mentioned in the bible, it seems.

    you don't understand that scripture.

if a man hits a woman so hard to make her child die...then basically its capital punishment. he shall deal with the consequences. apparently in this scripture, the mother WANTED to have the child. he took away that's mothers right and child's right to life.
