jello salad question?

I'm making a layered jello salad for christmas. Approximatly how long does it take for the jello to become "slightly tickened" and "firm" after it has been thickened. The recipe doesn't say and I know I'll get distracted by at least one of my kids and if I don't set a timer, I'm afraid I'll mess the recipe up!

If you replace the cold water with ice, and stir until all the ice melts, the jell-o will be slightly thickened within a half hour, and firm within an hour and a half or two. It can take an hour if you just use cold water to be slightly thickened.

I make a wonderful fruit / cottage cheese / jello salad and every time I get tons of compliments. The salad has multiple textures and levels of flavor. it is easy and delicious: 1 large container of cottage cheese 1-2 containers of whip cream (to taste) 1 box of orange jello powder 1 cup of chopped walnuts 1 can of tropical fruit salad (drained of juice) 1 can of chopped pineapple 1 can of mandarin orange fruit salad Open the fruit cans, chop the fruit into small bits. Allow to drain well. Mix the cottage cheese with the whip cream in a bowl. Add the well drained chopped fruit Mix in the orange jello powder. Add the chopped walnuts. Put in refrigerator to chill for few hours. Take half the salad to the party, keep half for your own enjoyment.
