Will ginger become more... edible... if it's cooked enough?

I've never used fresh ginger before and I saw it in a recipe, so I cut it into thin strips like the recipe said and now I'm simmering it. I wanted to see what fresh ginger tastes like so I ate a piece of it and it caught me off guard lol. So anyhow, I'm cooking for my boyfriend and he likes food that's a little spicy but his tolerance is low. Will the ginger eventually mellow out a little and not be so pungent and spicy?

Update:

If not I'm going to have to pick tiny little julienned ginger out of my piping hot slow cooker.

I usually grate ginger finely so it kind of disappears in the dish. Ginger is always very strong by itself but does mellow out with cooking. Eating it raw or semi cooked can be a shocker to the taste buds especially if it's really fresh.

I love ginger, when I make a juice I always throw a chunk in.
