Ripping or Tearing Lettuce?

I've heard people debate whether you should rip lettuce or tear it. Which one should you do, and (for Pete's sake) can you explain the difference?

There is no difference between ripping or tearing, but I do have a great hint you might like to use. Wrap your lettuce in paper towels and it will last longer.I do this with blueberries and strawberries also. My blueberries actually last two whole weeks in the refrigerator when I do that.

    rip, tear, no difference

cutting is bad - it cuts the cells and the lettuce browns & wilts quicker

tearing tends to separate cells from each other, but doesn't damage them
