Anaerobic exercise replaces fat with muscles or just builds muscles on top of fat that's there?

I want to lose some body fat and I do both aerobic and anaerobic exercise. I don't just want to lose the fat but I also want to replace it with some muscles but I've been told that I shouldn't do anything such as weight lifting because that won't help me lose the fat, instead it'll make me 'bigger'.

So could someone explain to me what I should do and why?

Thanks.

Update:

I need an in-depth answer please :D

Protein builds muscle. Do weight training three times each and every week. 2 units of 15 reps each and every exercising. Then drink a protein shake after each and every work out! The extra muscle tissues you have, the extra fat you burn!!
