Does anyone know how to prevent brussel sprouts giving you wind?

Urgent help needed.

I love brussel sprouts but they give me terrible flatulence. It doesn’t seam to matter how I cook them but prefer them not overcooked and with a bite. I generally prepare them by removing the outer leaves, crosscutting the stock and boil them for around ten minutes n lightly salted water. I then drain and coat lightly with butter before serving. I have cut down to only having them once a week and restrict myself to around 7 or 8 sprouts a portion. Please help because my wife is threatening that I’ve to choose between her or the sprouts.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as I would really miss her.

Boil in non salted water for at leat 20 minutes. They will be extra soft but I find that the longer the cooking time the lesser the discomfort from eating the veg which are really be good for our health.

Don't use butter but a drop or two of vinegar. It works wonders.

You might ask your wife to be patient and try preparing them differently. And run to another room when you are in difficulty - one where your wife isn't working.

    All the best.

Rookie - I feel your pain. My gas problems extend to almost any thing I eat. VERY embarrassing! I use Beano and Gas

Ex as a preventive measure. You can not alter the food. It is your digestive system. Some people are less tolerant than others.

    Good luck

Eat Beano when you eat Brussels sprouts.

ALL cole crop veggies are kind of windy. That includes cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and brussels sprouts.

if you have to choose between your wife and the sprouts you will probably find that eating your wife rather than the sprouts is far less likely to cause wind.

  • If you have difficulty digesting sprouts, they'll give you flatulence however you cook them. You could try taking peppermint oil (Colpermin). It doesn't always prevent flatulence, but it makes it smell of peppermint.
