Ramie: A natural fiber source from a plant called Boehmeria nivea a member of the nettle family. It's difficult to turn the plant into a textile. Ramie textiles are strong when dry but delicate when wet so they must be hand washed and air dried. It has little dimensional stability so it can stretch and shrink in odd ways. It has a bit of luster, it is comfortable to wear but it isn't very popular in clothes due to washing and stability issues

Nylon is a synthetic. A liquid polymer resin is extruded through holes in a metal plate. Nylon is fine and strong and is blended with other fibers for dimensional stability, stretch and durability. It was meant to be "artificial silk" when it was invented. Nylon doesn't like heat so it can't be ironed or dried at high heat in the dryer. Nylon is used to make hosiery including tights, pantyhose, stocking, socks and more. It's blended with wools and weaker fibers for strength. On its own wool fabrics are used for outerwear -the fine fibers can be densely woven into a water and wind proof fabric perfect for rain wear. When given a high tech coating on one surface it become water and wind proof and when combined with insulation makes warm and dry winter clothing.

Cotton is a natural fiber and comes from the cotton plant it's what's left after a plant goes to seed and the seed pod pops. It's the worlds most popular fiber. The majority of clothes are made from this versatile and useful fiber. It's used for t-shirts, jeans, skirt, pants, quilts, dress shirts, casual clothes, and much much more.

Linen in a natural fiber from the flax plant. The stems are soaked, "retted" and the remaining tough fibers are cleaned and spun into a very fine thread. In clothing linen is cool and comfortable and is used for tropical and summer clothes. It wrinkles easily. It is durable and linen fabrics can last for centuries.

Silk is a natural fiber from the cocoons of the Bombyx Moth. The cocoons are de-gummed and the fibers unreeled from the cocoon. It is the queen of fibers and fabric made from silk are luxurious. They look and feel wonderful on the skin. Silk is strong and durable when dry but weak when wet. It must be handles with care when washing and must air dry only. Silk clothes can last for many decades or longer -depending on the dyes used to color the fabric.

Polyester is a synthetic made similar to nylon, only with a different polymer resin. It's blended with other fibers for durability, shrink proofing, and for shape retention. It can be washed and dried easily in the modern washer and dryer and clothes made from polyester blends are strong and long wearing. it used to be cheap and nasty but modern micro denier polyesters are very good quality. It's also used for high tech performance athletic clothes because it doesn't absorb sweat -it wicks to the surface and evaporates leaving an athlete cooler than if he wore cotton.

Spandex and a strong fine synthetic stretch fiber. It is never used alone and it is ALWAYS blended with other fibers for stretch and shape retention. It can be damaged by the heat of a dryer so it must be dried on low. It's used in athletic gear because it stretches and flexes with the human body.

Cashmere is a natural fiber from the hair of the Cashmere goat similar to wool. It's strong, warm, soft and very lightweight. It's breathes meaning you can wear cashmere in spring as well as winter. It's used for sweaters, suits, coats and jackets. As a yarn it's made into hats, scarves and mittens. Cashmere is delicate so it must be hand washed in cold water and laid flat to dry. When blended with wool it's stronger and warmer. As a designer cashmere/wool blend is one of my favorite fabrics.

Faux leather is a synthetic with two parts: a vinyl or plastic layer and a fabric layer. Plastic is sprayed on a base of fabric and a leather like texture is heat pressed into it. It's cold in the winter, hot in the summer, and it is not durable. It scratches and tears easily and unlike true leather can't be repaired. It can't be washed or dry cleaned because the plastic layer can melt when exposed to heat.

Viscose is a natural fiber extracted from the cellulose of wood pulp. It's done with powerful solvents and chemicals, which scrub away the wood pulp leaving a resin. The resin is extruded the way nylon is made. It's cool in the summer. It shrinks when washed. It's rather unpredictable as far as care is concerned. It's also called "rayon."

All have very detailed entries on Wikipedia. you can look there for further information. This is a simple outline of the barest basics of all these fibers.
