When should I add sprinkles to the top of buttercream frosted cupcakes?

I want the sprinkles to stick to the frosting, not just fall off, but also not melt and run.

The cupcakes are for a wedding so they need to look perfect. I'm making them 24 hours in advance.

I'm using several different sprinkle types from the standard ice cream jimmies to Wilton sparkles to course colored sugar.

It depends on your icing. If it's the kind of buttercream that sets firm, you would want to add the sprinkles while the icing is still sticky. If your icing doesn't really set up firm, you can wait until just before you need them. Either way, keep them cold so the icing doesn't melt everywhere.

they must be added right when you frost because all frosting develops a light crust on it when exposed to air and if you wait too long, the sprinkles will just roll off.
