1 AnswerPregnancy6 years agoDo you happen to know what book I'm talking about?
My daughter and I read a book together when she was probably 10 or 11. It was really good, but neither of us can remember the name. Its about children who die and have to have coins to move into the afterlife. the "bad guy" so to speak is called the "Magoo." any ideas?

i saw this story when i logged into yahoo a few days ago. i know things like this happen on a fairly regular basis in america, if not daily. i just wonder why can't the media cover these stories like they do the 'other' stories. and by other, i know you know what i mean... the rapes, murders, drugs, guns at school, violence, and every other kind of ill that children today get into. these are the things that need to be in print. i think we can all learn from the actions of these high school students and teach our children from them as well!

The coach never considered any other option.
It didn't matter that his DeKalb, Ill., High School basketball team had ridden a bus two and a half hours to get to Milwaukee, then waited another hour past game time to play. Didn't matter that the game was close, or that this was a chance to beat a big city team.
Something else was on Dave Rohlman's mind when he asked for a volunteer to shoot two free throws awarded his team on a technical foul in the second quarter. His senior captain raised his hand, ready to go to the line as he had many times before.
Only this time it was different.
"You realize you're going to miss them, don't you?" Rohlman said.
Darius McNeal nodded his head. He understood what had to be done.
It was a Saturday night in February, and the Barbs were playing a non-conference game on the road against Milwaukee Madison. It was the third meeting between the two schools, who were developing a friendly rivalry that spanned two states.
The teams planned to get together after the game and share some pizzas and soda. But the game itself almost never took place.
Hours earlier, the mother of Milwaukee Madison senior captain Johntel Franklin died at a local hospital. Carlitha Franklin had been in remission after a five-year fight with cervical cancer, but she began to hemorrhage that morning while Johntel was taking his college ACT exam.
Her son and several of his teammates were at the hospital late that afternoon when the decision was made to turn off the life-support system. Carlitha Franklin was just 39.
"She was young and they were real close," said Milwaukee coach Aaron Womack Jr., who was at the hospital. "He was very distraught and it happened so suddenly he didn't have time to grieve."
Womack was going to cancel the game, but Franklin told him he wanted the team to play. And play they did, even though the game started late and Milwaukee Madison dressed only eight players.
Early in the second quarter, Womack saw someone out of the corner of his eye. It was Franklin, who came there directly from the hospital to root his teammates on.
The Knights had possession, so Womack called a time out. His players went over and hugged their grieving teammate. Fans came out of the stands to do the same.
"We got back to playing the game and I asked if he wanted to come and sit on the bench," Womack said during a telephone interview.
"No," Franklin replied. "I want to play."
There was just one problem. Since Franklin wasn't on the pre-game roster, putting him in meant drawing a technical foul that would give DeKalb two free throws.
Though it was a tight game, Womack was willing to give up the two points. It was more important to help his senior guard and co-captain deal with his grief by playing.
Over on the other bench, though, Rohlman wasn't so willing to take them. He told the referees to forget the technical and just let Franklin play.
"I could hear them arguing for five to seven minutes, saying, `We're not taking it, we're not taking it," Womack said. "The refs told them, no, that's the rule. You have to take them."
That's when Rohlman asked for volunteers, and McNeal's hand went up.
He went alone to the free throw line, dribbled the ball a couple of times, and looked at the rim.
His first attempt went about two feet, bouncing a couple of times as it rolled toward the end line. The second barely left his hand.
It didn't take long for the Milwaukee players to figure out what was going on.
They stood and turned toward the DeKalb bench and started applauding the gesture of sportsmanship. Soon, so did everybody in the stands.
"I did it for the guy who lost his mom," McNeal told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "It was the right thing to do."

They may not remember our record 20 years from now, but they'll remember what happened in that gym that night.
— Dave Rohlman, head coach of the opposing DeKalb team on what his players will take away from this experience.
--------------------------------------...
Franklin would go on to score 10 points, and Milwaukee Madison broke open the game in the second half to win 62-47. Afterward, the teams went out for pizza, two players from each team sharing each pie.

1 AnswerOther - News & Events1 decade agocan pet gerbils eat acorns out of the yard? my daughter is trying to feed them to him.?
i know it sounds like a well, duh, kind of question, but i've read on several different sites that different things can upset their stomachs and they can have some fruits and veggies and nuts, but not others. i haven't found acorns specifically mentioned. i was wondering if anyone knew. thanks!
2 AnswersRodents1 decade agowhat's the best way to get rid of fleas in your back yard?
i have a beagle/basset mix and a mini dauscand and they are covered in fleas. i've given them bath after bath with special flea and tick shampoo. it seems to work, then they go out in the yard to go potty, and they are covered again. my husband sprayed the back yard with a flea and tick spray, let it sit over night, and it didn't rain or anything. i just can't understand why they are so hard to get rid of. any ideas? besides burning it all off... i've already told my husband this IS NOT an option. (we live in an older neighborhood in the middle of town.
6 AnswersOther - Pets1 decade agowho was sitting beside kenny chesney tonight on the awards show?
it really looked like lindsay lohan... at least that's what my husband said when he called to see if i was watching and then had me turn over there to figure it out.
i checked the pictures that are posted now of the arrivals and preformances, but it doesn't mention who he was with.
2 AnswersCountry1 decade agoi know how i want my daughter's hair cut,but i don't know how to explain it. i can't find a pic.what can i do?
i had it cut like this once before, but i did it myself and kind of did a hack job on it. i'm not putting her through that again. after i got it fixed it looked really really cute. but i'm afraid to try that again. i've tried to explain how i want it to several different stylists, but no one ever cuts it right. they always end up making her look like dorothy hamill. that's not the kind of 'mushroom' cut she wants. she wants it cut like a friend of her's but we don't have a pic of her friend and the stylist doesn't know that girl (as she lives several hours away from us). do ya see my delima... oh, did i mention she's 5 and very independent?
2 AnswersHair1 decade agoi need some ideas for a "spring" wedding shower centerpiece. i'm helping my mother-in-law...?
we're doing the wedding shower for her neice. it's going to be an out of town wedding, so this will kinda be like the reception also. she told me i'm in charge of centerpeices for 6-10 tables. the only guidelines she gave me was 'spring flowers'... and just whatever i wanted to do. i'm hitting a roadblock as far as ideas. the only thing i've found pictures of are floating candles, and alison doesn't like those. if you have any suggestions, i would deeply appreciate them! the shower is may 3rd. or was it the 2nd? help!!!
4 AnswersWeddings1 decade agook, did you hear about the guy who blamed an oreo cookie for his reckless driving?
they just had a thing on the news... (they do weird headlines occasionally) and this one was about a guy who got pulled over because he was swerving recklessly and when the officer came to talk to him, he said it was because his oreo slipped out of his hands while he was dunking it in his glass of milk! he was swerving because he was trying to fish it out. they are taking the case to court...
that's crazy?!?!?!??!!!

6 AnswersMovies1 decade agodid anyone see this article about global warming?
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?story...
basically, it's saying that the ocean level is rising, but they don't know why. but the ocean temperature is not rising, meaning the whole global warming thing isn't as rapid as they thought.
does it make sense to anyone else, or is it just me... if the ice caps are melting in antartica and greenland, that's going to 1. make the water level rise. and 2. the cold water from the ice is going to mix with the warmer water and make the water that should be "getting warmer" stay roughly the same temperature. why then do they say it's an unexplained phenomanon? am i smarter than the scientists? maybe i'm just in the wrong business... ok, well, it made sense to me, so thanks for listening to me babble for a while.

5 AnswersElections1 decade agohow can i get the tempur paint off my fingers/fingernails? soap and water aren't working.?
Question Details: i volunteered at my daughter's pre-school today and their art activity involved black watered down tempur paint. (temper paint?) anyway... there was a spill (imagine that in a room full of 4 and 5 year olds!!) so not only were the rags covered in black paint, so were my hands. the majority of it came off with soap and water, but there's still some under my fingernails and around the edges. i've used a nail brush, but it still looks like my nails are just dirty. if it were a bright color, i wouldn't be so persnickity about it... i mean, bright green or blue, people are going to look and realize it's paint, but with it being black, it just looks like i don't wash. any ideas?
