1 AnswerMathematics1 decade agoIs it ethical to leave an unpaid internship at a newspaper to freelance for another outlet?
I know this story might be better suited for Randy Cohen of The Ethicist, but here’s my question:
I'm an undergraduate student. Last summer, I worked as a paid intern for a daily newspaper. I am receiving academic credit this summer. The editors usually assign me one or two stories a week in addition to office work. Lately, they've been asking me to write some stories on nights and weekends, but not much during business hours. I realize that they are probably being nice and that the clips that I am getting might help me in my career. However, I am not keen on covering an event for free on weekends when paid staff reporters or even freelancers might otherwise work.
There's a competing start-up website in a nearby community that seems to be using a lot of freelancers. If I were to approach them and they were willing to take me on, is it ethical to leave my unpaid summer internship? I’m not the only intern in the office and the paper would not be left short-handed.
I should mention that I have a bias. My college paper graciously pays me a nominal amount of money for my work. I do realize that clips from a college paper versus an established daily are of two different qualities. And don’t get me wrong: I am grateful towards the paper for the internship.
4 AnswersMedia & Journalism1 decade agoHow to make my LCD monitor into a TV?
Hey I got a really nice LCD computer monitor in my dorm. One problem. Doesn't have a TV tuner. How can I cheaply convert it in something able to get a TV signal. Many of the boxes I see cost almost as much as the LCD.

3 AnswersSecurity1 decade agoHow do I prevent a Google listing from appearing in search results?
I'm a soon-to-be-high-school-graduate. I've recently taken an internship at a local newspaper. As a result, many articles with my byline appear on Google. I'm very happy with that. However, a result somebody who has the same name as me has one or two reviews for products that personally offend me. While I realize that the site owner has right to have that review indexed on Google, how can I outrank/remove this listing so future employers, colleges, and friends don't see this listing and confuse it with my work?

1 AnswerMathematics1 decade agoIs it normal to buy a new car with 300 miles on it?
I purchased a sedan today that had 300 miles on the ododmeter. They said that they had to get it from a dealer up in Mass. (I like in CT) about 200 miles away as I had requested a PZEV which CT does not sell. Did I get ripped off? Is that a lot of miles? And for how long should I keep the car off the highway (I hear that you are supposed to ease them in)?
Many thanks...
4 AnswersBuying & Selling1 decade agoWhat are some characteristics of a front-page high school newspaper story?
I have written a myraid of articles for my high school paper over the past three years. However, my articles have never appeared on the front page.
While I like to see my articles published whether they appear on page 2 or page 10, I would like to have at least one article published before I graduate.
For those who know a lot about high school papers, or papers in general: what makes an appealing front page H.S. story? controversy? illegal activity? mention of a famous person? humor?
