  • Is "melancholy mad" an actual phrase?

I've heard the description "melancholy mad" in a couple of different places, and I was trying to clarify its meaning. Searching for it got me nowhere. Is "melancholy mad" a real phrase, and if so, what does it mean?

  • How far could an inexperienced skier get while carrying someone else?

I know this sounds like a goofy question, but I'm working on a comedy story, and I want to know what I can do so this scene isn't totally unrealistic. In my first draft, I have one character preparing to ski down a mountain for the first time in his life--it's an emergency--and his friend starts to fall, panics, and grabs him for support. The two of them go hurtling down the mountain.

So, inexperienced skier going down a mountain, with another person holding onto him from behind (probably trying to stand on the skis). How far could they conceivably get before either the skis pop off or they fall?

  • How many years would it take for the Earth to recover from pollution?

This is for a story I'm writing, hence the weird question.

If pollution and whatnot reached a level where scientists predicted that Earth would soon be uninhabitable, and virtually the entire human race left the planet, approximately how long would it take for the Earth, left on its own, to fully recover?

  • Does "necare immortalis" translate coherently from Latin?

I want to use a Latin title for a story, and I was looking for something that would roughly mean "To Kill an Immortal," or at least convey the same sort of sentiment. Looking things up, "Necare Immortalis" was the best translation I found. Can someone who knows more Latin than me tell me if that works the way I want it to or not?

  • Is it possible to misinterpret your own emotions?

I'm working on a story. One of the characters has had a very traumatic past, and now she's met another character, who really wants to protect and help her. I keep thinking that if she finds herself sexually attracted to him, she's going to somehow misinterpret her own emotions as being fear of him assaulting her, because being attacked is the only thing she's experienced sex linked to. I don't know if this is even realistic, though, and I don't know how to write it so that it makes sense. Could this happen, and if so, how would it feel in the person's mind?

  • "Low stock" at Gamestop means they have a copy or two, right?

I'm going to be going to Gamestop tomorrow, and I checked on the availability of a game at the store. It says "low stock," and, for various reasons, I can't use the options to have them hold a copy for me. Assuming someone doesn't run in ahead of me and buy it, that means the game IS there and should be there tomorrow, right?

  • How do I use Amazon credit?

A couple of weeks ago, Amazon sent me an email saying that I had $20 worth of credit. There was no code in the email, but when I ordered something, the credit didn't show up then, either. How do I use it? Where do I find it?

  • Halo: Reach--offline credit limit reached?

After playing Halo: Reach for a while, I finally found out that by going online for some downloads, I got my offline credits capped so that I could only get 50 at a time. On Wednesday, I was playing for a while and finally was told "offline credit limit reached." I figured it meant I couldn't earn any more offline credits that day.

But now it's Sunday, and it still gave me that message and refused to give me any credits. I only have 7000-some credits, and since I don't have Xbox Live Gold, does this mean I can't earn any more credits ever?

  • Why am I getting so few credits in Halo: Reach?

When I started, I got 100+ credits even though I didn't do much. Today, I didn't die and I got headshots and everything, but I only got 50 credits. I read it could get capped from playing Xbox Live, but I only have Silver. What am I doing wrong?

  • Why can't I open an attachment (only Word documents) without saving it?

I used to be able to open all attachments just fine. Now, if I click on a Word document that has been emailed to me, or one online, and the "Do you want to open this file?" box comes up, clicking "open" does nothing. I have to save it to open it. How can I fix this?

  • What forms of ID are accepted at game stores?

I don't have a driver's license, so any time I buy an M-rated game at a store, I end up sending my mom with my money to do the actual buying. I can't do that forever, so I was wondering--what other forms of ID do game stores accept as proof of your age?

  • How do I position my text in front of my image with HTML?

I've seen a couple of ways to do this, but neither is quite right for what I want.

I don't think I can use the image as the background of a table, because I'm also using it as an image map. Other parts of the image are links, but I want to be able to put text over the one part.

I also don't want the text running off the image. I want to be able to set the boundaries of where the text appears, with a scrollbar.

Can anyone help me with this?

  • How long will Halo: Reach be at a lower price?

I saw that, at least at Gamestop, Halo: Reach and Halo: Reach Legendary Edition both have gotten significant price cuts. Does anyone know if this drop is for a limited time only?

  • How much would someone be able to use a broken arm?

I know it's an odd question. It's for a story I'm writing. The one character breaks his arm (specifically, his wrist), and I was wondering if he would still be capable of using it if he could handle the pain. If so, what sorts of things would he, and would he not, be able to do? What differences would their be if the arm was broken in a different spot?

  • What sort of research topics can be found in the field of English?

For my Honors program, I'm eventually going to have to do a final research project, and it should be related to my major, English. I'm having trouble even thinking of topics. I was hoping for something that would be about either creative writing or literature, but to me, English has always been a hard area to find researchable questions in. Any suggestions?

  • Which version of Silent Hill 4: The Room is the best?

I've heard that the PC version is quite glitchy and, as a result, generally not considered as good. Is there any difference between the PS2 and Xbox versions? Would one be preferable to get over the other?

I don't have PowerPoint on this computer, but I do have the PowerPoint Viewer. It always worked just fine, and then suddenly, it hasn't been displaying the content. Titles of slides will appear, but the rest of the text will not. What happened, and how can I fix it?

  • What can you do for someone online for Christmas?

I have a friend who really doesn't like getting presents. In the past I've suggested cards, cookies, etc. but he's been unhappy about all of those ideas, too. I do want to do something for him for Christmas. What can I do? I thought perhaps something online might work, but I don't know what.
