  • New human ancestor discovered in Africa?

Atheists, Christians, whoever you are; what do you make of this report from the BBC about a possible 'missing link'?

  • Are humans the only creatures capable of existential thoughts?

I know we don't know for sure, but I am interest to hear your opinions:

Do other animals contemplate their own existence?

Do dogs think they were created by a big dog?

Do horses think they were created by a big horse?

  • God & cancer, TB, AIDS, etc...?

why does God want so many people to die?

Is modern medicine, which fights these illnesses, an affront to God?

Are the people who work tirelessly to keep others alive, going to Hell themselves?

If you had one of these illnesses, would you refuse treatment, and just accept that you are going to die?

  • The subtext of Adam & Eve is painfully obvious...?

The forbidden fruit wasn't just placed on any old tree in the Garden of Eden - it was placed on the Tree of Knowledge.

In other words, the 'fall of man' was caused entirely by our natural desire for knowledge and understanding.

If the fruit was placed on the Tree of Getting Poked In The Eye, there's no way Adam and Eve would've gone anywhere near it.

The moral of the story? Knowledge is overrated. Ignorance is bliss. Don't ask questions, do as you are told, or go to hell.

  • Why worship Jesus when his Dad is clearly superior?

The Bible makes it clear that God did all the work, and Jesus was just his messenger. So why is Jesus your 'Lord'? Its like worshipping Robin instead of Batman - he's a good guy, but he's not the star attraction.

  • Are you aware of the Roman god Mithras?

He was sent to Earth to live as a mortal,

He died for our sins - and came back to life the following Sunday,

People celebrated him by giving each other gifts on his birthday - which was the 25th of December,

He was born of a virgin, in a stable, attended by shepherds,

He was known as the Light of the World,

He had Twelve disciples - who he shared a Last Meal with before his death,

His followers symbolically 'ate' his flesh and blood,

The leader of his followrs, who lived in Vatican Hill in Rome, was called the 'Papa',

and, as the Sun God, he was worshipped on Sunday.

All this, just before the time of Jesus. Amazing!

  • God's sending me to Hell because of who (and what) I am?

Surely you have to question the logic of a man who creates 'flawed' human beings, then blames them for his own mistakes.

Even Dr Frankenstein, who was insane, didn't blame his monster when it started killing people.

  • The religious don't understand the atheists...?

It seems to me that the religious are incapable of understanding that non-believers do not think in the same way as them.

Religious people haven't accidentally stumbled across a Bible, read it out of simple curiosity and then decided 'yes, this makes sense' - they believe in the word of God (or whichever deity it may be) because they have been told to do so.

So when they encounter someone who doesnt believe in any religion, they assume that something similar has happened to them - they assume that the non-believer has been forced into atheism by an 'evil' force or organisation, a sort of 'anti-God'.

The religious mistake 'logic and reason' for 'evil indoctrination', as they are seemingly incapable of appreciating the power of the former over the latter - especially as this would be something actively discouraged in their own faiths. This fundamental misunderstanding is, to my mind, one of the greatest obstacles to any meaningful debate.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.
