  • Is there any point in seeing Black Swan now?

So... I was watching a youtube "review" of Black Swan, and the kid gave away the end of the movie. Like, tells you exactly how she, er, takes care of her problem. I really wanted to see that movie!

Can anybody who has seen it tell me if knowing that fact is going to completely ruin any potential enjoyment of the movie?

I'm really bummed. :( I was actually going to go out to watch the movie as soon as I finished watching the so-called review, and then that happened.

  • Delayed marriage - Is this just weird?

Googling things like "postponing marriage" and "delayed marriage" seems to bring up either statistics or simplistic looking pages admonishing teens to look at more than sex and fuzzy feelings when choosing a life partner. I was hoping for some real-life stories. Little too much to hope for, I guess?

My fiance and I got engaged in December of 2008. I had started nursing school that fall, and I was going positively crazy with all the studying. Our plan was to get married after nursing school, "sometime". At one point we started tossing dates around, and eventually settled on 4/8/12 ('cause the sequence of numbers amused us).

However, as I'm approaching the end of my degree in nursing, and I'm thinking about going further with my education, I'm starting to look at the big picture. I've actually plotted out a 45 year savings plan for the two of us, so we have plenty to retire on, in addition to whatever job benefits, 401k/IRA whatever it is we have built up.

Anyway, it's come to mind that my fiance probably won't get much, if any financial aid for his schooling if we're married and I'm making an RN's salary. Based on that, I asked him what he thought of postponing the wedding until after he finishes school, or at least gets his AA or AS or whatever, so now we're looking at sometime probably in 2015.

So I guess my question is... are we that weird for being "engaged", but with such a very distant and not even set-in-stone wedding date? I'd love to just up and get married tomorrow, but I'm very conscious of practicality, and I see it as a choice between sinking several thousand dollars in debt on a wedding as well as sacrificing several thousand dollars of financial aid in the short term, versus postponing it and taking the time to both save up the money for a wedding, etc, and reaping the benefits of the financial aid.

So... are we really weird for looking at it that way?

  • What can I do to be supportive during my friend's labor?

My friend told me today that she'd like me to be there with her during her first baby's birth. I would love to do that, I just need to figure out what things I can do while in the hospital with her - i.e. back massage, warm compresses, etc. What resources should I look into? I've never "attended" a birth before, but I did watch my mom give birth to several of my siblings at home, so I'm familiar with how a birth goes... it's just been a while, and I've never been there in the role of a support person.

So, if I were there with you during your baby's birth, what would you want me to be doing?

  • Female Leg Hair: Which is worse?

    1. A woman's legs, free of hair, covered in red bumps, scabs, and blotchy, irritated skin, or

    2. A woman's legs, with very fine, translucent, non-prickly hairs all over, and soft, even-toned, healthy, non-irritated skin?

I've just about had it with shaving. Every single time I try, I end up with irritation as described above, and can't bear to show my legs in public until the scabs and irritation has healed somewhat. Then the ingrown hairs start popping up, and I have to shave again to scrape them open and start the whole cycle over again. Bah! Annoying.

So I've tried not shaving (just my legs, not that it matters), and now that the hair has grown out past the stubble phase, I've found I'm quite happy with it. No more irritation, the skin looks smooth and clear, and nobody has ever noticed the hair on my legs (even when I wear short-shorts). I've discovered a new sensation - I can actually feel the breeze rippling through the hairs on my legs, and it's the most fascinating thing ever.

  • Uh... complicated roommate situation re: US Census?

I live in an apartment with three other people. We are two couples: my fiance and I, and our two married roommates. How the heck do we denote that on the Census form, and does it make any difference who Person # 1 is?

I was thinking we could put the husband in the married couple as Person # 1, and then his wife as Person # 2, but then what about my fiance and I? Aren't we supposed to somehow indicate that we are "unmarried partners", or something like that?

  • Building Credit - How am I doing?

I just paid off my main credit card, and requested and received a credit limit increase, from $1,500 to $5,000. I also applied for and was approved for a second credit card, with a limit of $5,000. My only other debt is under $1,000 on a jewelery store credit card.

I have very little credit history, but my score is good, according to creditkarma.com (how accurate is that, does anyone know?), around 750. According to the website, I can make up to 4 more hard inquiries into my credit before it will negatively affect me.

One of the negative things affecting me is the short average age of my accounts. I know opening that second card will negatively affect that further. However, I figured the available credit/used credit ratio would balance that out a bit.

My main question at this point is whether I should apply for another credit card, to further expand my available credit, that way I can sit back and wait for the accounts to age, or if I should let this new one age, and then open a new one some years down the line? I'm worried that if I go with the second option, I'll be stuck in a sort of yo-yo pattern, where I keep on raising and lowering the average age of my account. Seems to me I should open my intended amount of credit cards, and then stop and let them age (I plan to have one bill automatically paid by each credit card, and I'll pay off the balance each month).

  • Fiance's Finances in Tatters... Estimated Recovery Time?

So... first off, please don't go and tell me to dump him or anything like that, I'm not asking for relationship advice.

OK, basically, here's the deal: He has two credit cards, both of which have apparently been unpaid for so long that the companies closed both of them. He is currently paying them down aggressively. One of the cards is permanently closed, with no option of re-opening after it's paid off, but the other one he can request to re-open it 15 days after he's paid the balance down to zero.

We are getting married over two years from now (I am in school) and we have no joint accounts right now.

I am wondering how long it will take him, after he's paid off both cards, to get a decent credit score? Also, when we get married, is his credit history automatically linked with mine, or is that only if we get joint accounts?

I do plan to see a financial advisor before we get married or get a joint account, but I am incredibly busy with school these days (not to mention I'm broke) and won't likely be able to do that for some time yet, so I'm trying to see where else I can get good information.

  • How much of a wedding can you plan before setting a date?

My fiance and I are planning on getting married after I finish school (sometime in 2011). I want to go as leisurely and stress-free (as far as the wedding goes, not so much as far as school) as possible for as long as possible. We haven't set a date yet, but I was thinking that I could start making some sort of preparations in the meantime, perhaps between semesters and stuff.

I also want to go as cheap as possible, short of serving cheese and crackers on napkins and wine in dixie cups.

I figure we can do a summery, outdoor type of thing, low-key but pretty.

What should I be doing in the meantime? I'm clueless about where to start - only thing that comes to mind is stuffing envelopes with pretty paper so I can send invitations in them when the time comes.

  • I think an old acquaintance of mine might have Marfan syndrome... Would it be completely inappropriate to...?

Contact him, even though we were simply acquaintances and haven't spoken in over 5 years, to see if he's been diagnosed, or has ever talked to his doctor about it? I mean, I obviously don't need to know if he has, I just am suddenly concerned, because I was reading about Marfan syndrome the other day, and as I read the description of the physical characteristics of the disease, he popped into my head immediately. Marfan syndrome can kill if it's left undiagnosed, but then again, it's not my business if he has it or not... but I wouldn't want him to end up without necessary medical treatment just because he never got diagnosed... any ideas? I still have his e-mail tucked away somewhere, so it'd be easy to send him a note, I just wouldn't want it to be taken the wrong way.

  • So, he wants me to cook for him... Ideas?

So I am not able to get anything resembling a negative opinion from my fiance too often, he's really not into giving constructive (or any) criticism most of the time. The other night, though, I was able to get him to cop to being slightly disappointed that I don't cook for him. He clarified that he doesn't at all expect it, and he doesn't even wish for me to cook for him all the time ("maybe on weekends", he suggested), and he understands that I'm busy with school and all, so it's OK if I don't, and blah, blah, blah... but anyway, I'm thrilled to get an actual opinion out of him, and wouldn't mind cooking on occasion, but I'm a clueless dolt in the kitchen. I finally mastered macaroni and cheese. What can I make that's easy, guy-friendly, and not obvious "heath-food" but not bad for you either?

  • What do you think of the name Zoe Ann?

I've heard people say they prefer the name Zoe with a longer middle name, but I think I like Zoe Ann used as a first name, kinda... sorta like people who go by Mary Ann, even though it's technically their first and middle name.

  • Parking ticket - handicapped parking space?

My friend got a parking ticket for $250 because she parked in a handicapped parking space without a handicap permit. The thing is, though, she didn't actually park - she was dropping my friends and I off, and she pulled into the space briefly so we could get out, without her blocking traffic. She didn't turn off the car, didn't get out of the car, and was actually in reverse about to leave, when the cop showed up at her window and started issuing her a ticket. Is there anything we can do? I mean, can she be ticketed even though she wasn't even actually parked?? We live in Florida, by the way, if that helps.

  • How does your relationship differ from "the norm"?

Not that I'm any expert on whatever the norm might be...

Mine is a little backwards, I think. I'm more the protective, sheltering one in the relationship, as well as the one with the financial savvy and the career goals. He's more emotionally supportive and sensitive. I was reading about sleeping positions and what they say about a relationship - supposedly spooning indicates more traditional roles in the relationship, with the one on the outside (presumably usually the male) being the more protective one and the one inside being the sensitive one. Well, guess who sleeps on the outside of our "spoon"? Yep, that'd be me. All in all, we have a very stable, communicative relationship, and get along very nicely, so I don't think it's dysfunction of any kind, just different. How about you?

  • Do you think my mother's recent marriage will affect my financial aid?

I'm 21 years old, in nursing classes and working hard to pay rent (don't live with my mother). My mother has been divorced since 2003, but just got married this past December. In the past, I've gotten full financial aid coverage because my mother's income is very low (she makes less than I do) and she has five children living at home (not counting my sister and I who moved out). I don't know how much money this guy collects off of disability (he really is eligible, he's a cesspot of medical issues, every other week he's hospitalized), but I'm worried that whatever comes in might throw off my eligibility for financial aid, and I can't afford tuition myself by a long shot. Any idea?

  • Thinking about becoming an egg donor - things to consider?

I recently saw an article about egg donation, and the monetary aspect of it is appealing to me.

What are some things I should take into consideration before making a decision?

    Things I've thought of:

-The possibility of child X showing up wondering about bio-mom.

-Side effects of the medications they give to stimulate egg production.

    -Fiance's part in the decision.

I've considered surrogacy before, but I'm not too keen on putting myself through the whole pregnancy and birthing experience for the first time, and it not being for my own child. Maybe after I've had kids. But anyway, the idea isn't new to me in case that helps/makes a difference.

  • Black dress, black tights, red shoes?

I have little to no fashion sense. I have a cute black dress made of t-shirt material, it's about knee length or just above, with ruched cap sleeves (ruched? gathered?). I also have a pair of really adorable red (like between candy apple red and burgundy) mary janes with chunky heels. I'd like to wear both to work, but I think it looks kinda odd without any tights or hose or anything. (By the way, my job is pretty casual, usually I wear a polo shirt and jeans, so it shouldn't be an issue there). I thought of wearing the two things with black tights, since it's supposedly trendy or whatever, but I'm not sure if that's the right way to put it together. Thoughts?

  • What can I do for Valentine's day for my guy?

We've been together almost 4 years (anniversary is 4 days before Valentine's Day), and we just got engaged over the holidays. I want to do something nice for him, because he's really romantic and stuff (I'm just pretty much practical) and I noticed that he updated his MySpace to say "10 more days!" and put "excited" or something like that as his mood yesterday. So I know he's looking forward to the day, and I want to make sure I do my part to make it special. I don't know if he's planning a surprise, but I need to take that into consideration because I'm no good at pleasantly surprised reactions - you'll never catch me jumping up and down with glee. I want to be sure that I have a satisfying reaction to whatever his plans might be, and I would like to also have something nice to surprise him with.

I know I'm entirely too analytical for this... but I'd like to try, because I do care immensely and making him happy makes me happy.

Any ideas? He's into movies, sci-fi, selling diamonds (he's a jewelry consultant, I think that's why he's so into romantic stuff), and um... well? I dunno... I just want to do something nice for him.

  • One more question... Who gets a form 1098-T?

I know it has something to do with school and tuition, but I'm not sure if I get one or not because I did not pay for my tuition or my books, I received financial aid to cover it. Should I expect and wait for a form 1098-T before filing my taxes?

  • How can you tell who is a reliable person to assist you with your taxes?

I know there are professional tax advisors, but I don't know how to tell if they're licensed or not.

I've heard bad things about H&R Block, but my fiance and his parents have been going to a man who works there for 15 years, and they say he's good.

My roommate has always gone to some other tax advisor who she says gets her lots of deductions (which always sounds a little fishy to me, because she doesn't have a uniform for work, but she does buy "professional wear", but it isn't anywhere near $5000, so I don't see how it would make more sense to itemize her clothes and gas and stuff) and she always gets a good refund.

My mom has always used this lady who does your taxes if you fax her your W-2, and I have used her before, but it makes me a little uncomfortable to just fax someone your paperwork, and not actually sit down with them and have them ask you for more information, to find out what deductions you might be eligible for.

I used TurboTax once last year, but last year was the first time I'd ever actually ended up owing taxes instead of getting a refund, and when I put in my info this year, it said the same thing, so I've kind of got a bad taste in my mouth from them.

My fiance, my roommate, and my mom all want me to go and use "their people", since they're sure it's incorrect that I owe money because they always get refunds. I'm pretty sure that whoever I pay to tell me about my taxes is going to just tell my I do actually owe the $68 to the government, and then turn around and charge me $100 or something for telling me that. But I want to go ahead and go to someone so I can shut everybody up once and for all so they can stop telling me about all the money I'm supposedly missing out on. I think my fiance's job must not report all of his commission from his sales. I think my mom gets a refund because she has 5 kids living at home, she's in college, and one of her kids at home is in college. I think my roommate gets a refund for God-only-knows what reason, because her tax person uses fishy deductions. I think I don't get a refund because I work one full time job with a flat hourly rate and no commission or anything like that, I don't pay anything for school because I get financial aid, and I don't have uniforms or anything like that for work.

But I digress... my initial question stands: How can I pick the right person to do my taxes this once, so I can determine if I was getting it right with my whole Turbo-Tax thing anyway?
