  • Is income earned in Texas free of West Virginia State Tax?

My son is a West Virginia resident in graduate school and is currently claimed as a dependent on my tax returns. He will be working in Texas this summer which has no state income tax on earnings. Will he (or I ) need to report that income in West Virginia for 2014? Thanks in advance.

  • A better egg nog recipe?

I've been making Christmas egg nog for years from a 4-5 generation old recipe. I give quarts to my friends and neighbors who rave about it. The liquors are bourbon and either rum or brandy. I use white rum as the brandy seems a little harsh. I'd like to tweak it next year for one of the batches, but don't want to screw it up. Has anyone used spiced rum or dark rum in egg nog? Or should I not mess with a winner.

  • Selling a property which currently has liens?

I own a piece of property with a partner and we have a buyer for it. Unbeknownst to me, his business was having some difficulties in years past and creditors have placed liens on that property which would need to be satisfied to complete the sale. I'm pretty sure I'm screwed, but could someone verify that for me? Thanks in advance.

  • Selling a stock before x-dividend?

I am an owner of record of a stock that announced an x-dividend for shareholders of record on Dec. 13th and is payable the end of December. I purchased the stock on Dec. 11 with a settlement date on my statement of Dec. 14th. I have 2 questions. Will I be entitled to the dividend since the settlement date is after the 13th, and can I sell the stock prior to the payable date and still receive the dividend?

  • Banking Relationship between CEO and Bank Illegal?

How is this legal? A National bank corp. (holding company) has 7 affiliate banks in 2 states. This is a public stock entity. The Chairman, President and CEO of the Bancorp is also the President and CEO of the bank affiliates. His real estate development co. borrowed the funds from the bank to build a branch, which he leases to the bank affiliate for 5 year periods with 8 renewal periods of 5 years. The most recent triple-net lease is slightly more than $60,000/yr. He also owns a former furniture store building which he has been unable to lease or sell. He is now in the process of renovating this building to lease to the bank holding company for executive offices. I have to imagine it's somewhere around the same lease terms. If these are legal transactions, they certainly seem morally wrong. Any thoughts?

  • Is there any free software to add text to a PDF doc?

I get PDF documents frequently that require information to be added. Is there software available that would allow me to add the text required and then print them out? I am not looking to change the basics of the document, just add required information; such as AIA documents might require. Ideally, I could change the pdf to a word doc; add information as necessary, then print or email back.

  • New mortar doesn't match adjacent mortar.?

We performed brick infills in several apartment buildings. The bricklayer determined that the original mortar was standard gray color which was correct, however the mortar immediately adjacent to the infills has weathered, which exposes the minute pieces of aggregate and sand, giving it a more beige color. After drying, the new mortar really stands out. Is there a way to attempt to color the new mortar after drying; at least until it ages?

  • Are fringe benefits reported on Federal Form WH-347 and 348 taxable?

We are performing some sub- contract work funded through the economic recovery act. We have never been involved with Federal contracts to this extent in the past. We do not belong to any Trade Unions, so the fringe benefits are to be paid directly to our employees. Are the fringes to have tax withheld from them, and if so, is it all Federal, State, Local taxes?

  • What entity is actually allowed to view Corporate Minutes upon request?

My company is incorporated in West Virginia as a Subchapter S. 15 employees including myself and office manager. We have one shareholder ( me ) One Officer ( again, me ) one director; (my wife, who is also an attorney, but not my attorney).

I received a letter from our Unemployment Comp. service ( which is a public/private operation which is really confusing but do a fine job ) stating that they wanted to review a litany of documents relating to "...2008 and possibly 2007". I grasp the payroll, checkbook, timesheet and other parts of the request, since under the table wages while someone is collecting unemployment is not all that uncommon. And I don't mind the audit, either. However, I was amused about this audit since we had no layoffs in either year, hence no under the table stuff, and they should know that. We've got the same employees year after year. I understand that random audits just happen, but don't you think they'd check? Anyway, they also requested to view our Corporate minutes. I have no problem with that if they're entitled to do so, but are they actually entitled to just request to read our minutes and view them? Although there isn't, there could be some proprietary stuff in there. Our Secretary of State's website offers no assistance in this regard. Heck, I've never even had the IRS ask to see them. My lovely wife/attorney said, "give them whatever they want, you have nothing to hide", and in fact, I don't. I am only curious and will probably let them look at them, regardless. Opinions would be appreciated. I'm also trying to figure out how "I possibly mislaid all of my 2007 records". I know better than to make the bureaucracy angry, but this just seems like too much fun to pass up totally.

  • Where are all the new Chryslers?

Some guys in my office and I were wondering; where did all the Chryslers go? The company closed down hundreds of dealers and they had to be out of business by June 6th I think. I have been on the road and made a point of looking at these former dealerships and the lots are empty. I know they were discounting but not giving them away. So...anyone know where the cars went? Thanks.

  • Federal Tax Credits for Energy-Efficient Windows and Doors?

We are a residential contractor and have been receiving inquiries for replacement windows which meet the Federal Tax Credit guidelines. We are aware of the Energy Performance ratings required, and understand that the Tax Credit is only on the cost of the windows and not the installation labor. We buy from our supplier at a cost, and mark-up that cost to our customer during the sale. My question is: Does my customer get a tax credit on what my firm paid for the window ( before mark-up) or do they receive the tax credit on the marked-up cost for the window?

  • When I try to save an MSword document, it saves as MSworks?

I use MSworks a lot because I'm used to it and have some information that I don't wish to redo as a word or excel document. Sending and receiving email attachments is done in MSword. Lately, when I attempt to save a word doc, it seems to default to works and if I email it, no one can read it because I'm about the only guy on the planet that still uses works a lot. Is there something I'm missing to save word as word?? Thanks for any help.

  • Vegetable garden plan?

My son has taken an interest in planting a vegetable garden. I think this is very worthwhile, but don't want the yard to look horrible. Is there a downloadable program online that would allow us to "plan" the garden before it goes in?

  • car stopped moving forward?

My son was not far from home when his dodge Neon with front wheel drive just stopped moving forward. The engine runs fine and he has no forward gears or park; only reverse. There have not been any signs of leaks and he said the car ran fine until this suddenly happened. Is this a transmission problem perhaps or something else with the front wheel drive. Thanks
