  • Is Murhpy's Law the answer for the world's current state ?

It's not a complex or deep idea, but it just crossed my mind while reading another question, where a guy asked why did our world become so depraved and why is our society so immoral, cruel, material, etc.

I just thought that maybe Murhpy's law sums it all up : " if anything can go wrong, it will. "

Philosophically speaking there is no reason for why things should go in a certain way.

We have our ideas about why something is wrong, but objectively speaking, things just happen.

We are conscious about how things affect us, but that's just our perception and our perception is programmed to make distinction between " right " and " wrong " , but every bit of our Universe is made to generate a mixture of those and in the end it is an eternally repeating cycle, we just have to notice that if we take out the pieces of it, then it makes no sense, but if we see them as a cycle or a system, then it's all connected and eternal.

Eastern philosophy puts it the best way : you can't have good without bad or bad without good, nor light without darkness or darkness without sunshine.

Every dark period of our history was followed by a brighter future. It's just the way it is, because it wouldn't be a way otherwise.

  • Do you think a second degree in Philosophy is worth it ?

I'm studying Business and Philosophy also. I'm in the first year. While I'm sure that having a Business degree is worth it, I'm not sure about Philosophy. I like to study Philosophy, but I'm not sure that studying it in college is actually worth it. It takes a lot of time and it is very selective because of the teachers' preferences. Basically I could study it on my own.

The question is : is getting a degree in Philosophy worth it if I'm studying in the Business field ?

  • How do you interpret this poem ?

    "So summer is gone,

    leaving no epitaph.

It's still warm in the sun,

    only that's not enough.

All that true could have come,

    like a five-fingered fluff.

    Folded into my palm,

    only that's not enough.

    No evil was slighted

    in the good aftermath.

    World was festively lighted,

    only that's not enough.

    Life forever was tucking,

    caring, making me laugh.

    I was really lucky,

    only that's not enough.

    No leaves ever seared,

    no limbs broken rough.

Day, like glass, washed all clear,

    only that's not enough..."

    /1967 Arseny Tarkovsky/

    ***

    /literal translation/

    "Now the summer has passed.

    It might never have been.

It is warm in the sun,

    But it isn't enough.

    All that might've occurred

    Like a five-fingered leaf

    Fluttered into my hands,

    But it isn't enough.

    Neither evil nor good

    Has yet vanished in vain,

It all burned and was light,

    But it isn't enough.

Life has been as a shield,

    And has offered protection.

    I have been most fortunate,

    But it isn't enough.

    The leaves were not burned.

    The boughs were not broken,

    The day clear as glass,

    But it isn't enough."

  • What's your interpretation of this quote ?

" You always overlook the most important things, because you let your emotions get the better of you. " - Near ; it is a quote from the Japanese manga series, Death Note.

I found this quote not only interesting, but very valuable too. Just a line, but such an essence.

For those who understand the meaning of this quote : how do you interpret it ?

Can you identify yourself with it ?

Does it help you if you think about it ?

    Have a great day !

  • What's the point of dependence ?

From a philosophical perspective, what is the point of the existence of such a thing as dependence/addiction ?

Human beings have a tendency to become dependent/addicted to many things, but at the end of the day they often realize that they would give anything to get their freedom back again; as time passes by, they don't even remember what freedom tastes like; they completely forget what feeling is to be free, like that period of their life was just an illusion and all their existence is about being the slave of something.

What is the reason for why we are programmed like this ?

Why it is possible for us to get in such a miserable state ?

  • Can long term exposure to cold cause problems ?

I like to live in cold places.

I mean, for example, my rooms are quite cold because I like them to be that way. It's winter now, but I like to keep my room temperature somewhere between 14-19 grade Celsius. This is inside, but as you can guess, when I walk out of my house, the temperature is very low also and I like to spend time in the cold air.

A doctor said that this kind of exposure to cold will certainly decrease my immunity and I will have diseases and problems because of this.

Can I really get any permanent damage from this ?

  • If someone cheats and you would know it....?

Someone asked me today what would I do if I would know a wife who is cheating her husband. Would I tell him or would I not about his wife unfaithfulness ?

I answered that I would probably not involve myself in this situation, because it is not my job to judge the personal life of another person.

However, the question somehow remained open in my mind.

Many persons would say " Poor guy, you can't be so cruel to let him suffer " , but let's be serious :

1.In many cases, we don't even know the background of the story. Maybe the " poor guy " is a rude and agressive dude who beats his wife and this is why she seeks happiness somewhere else. There are many possibilities.

    2. Assuming that in this case we are responsible to do something about the situation, seems a quite excessive approach. Morally, we would like to live in a perfect world, where no one cheats no one, but this is not that world. Logically however, the fact that we find out somehow that a woman is cheating his man is just one thing and running to the man to tell him that his wife is cheating on him is another thing. The first one is an unplanned incident, the second one is a voluntary, but not certainly required action.

  • Does anyone know what movie is this quote from ?

The protagonist ( played by Leonardo Dicaprio ) asks from his friend if he knows a shop where he can buy a red dress or something like that, and the other one says that " no, there are no shops open at this time, it's 2 in the morning " ( this is not accurate, I can't remember exactly how this line was ).

    I was sure that it is from " Aviator " ( 2004 ) , but I can't find it.

  • " Truth is singular. It's 'versions' are mistruths. " - Opinions ?

If truth is singular , then we assume that there is an objective truth. Although many of us hold the belief that there is no objective truth because every truth is relative, so there can't be a singular truth because then it would be no longer relative.

What do you think about this ? ( The quote is from the movie " Cloud Atlas " )

Whether it is physical or mental damage, why do you think that someone still chooses to do what he likes, despite of the side effects that can affect him ?

Also, what is your experience about " condemnable " pasions that you had or you're still having in your life ?

If you have no passion that weakens you, doesn't matter, you can still share your thoughts.
