  • How many deaths do you believe were the result of terrorist attacks in the United States since September 11, 2001?

Do not include the deaths resulting from the 9/11 attacks, just afterward until present. Thanks!

  • What is a good exploration app?

I do a lot of wild food picking in my city, and I'm looking for an iPhone app that will allow me to save the coordinates of plants that I find so I can go back to them. Something with an interface similar to Geocaching would be preferred - where I can put in specific coordinates (down to the seconds) and it will tell me how far away the plant is, and in what direction. I want the app to be free. The minimum requirement is that it must must must tell me my exact location so that I can at least write it down.

  • Does a photographer have the right to sell images of me?

I played a little open mic at a coffee shop with my band, and we like to have video/photos of us whenever we play. There was a photographer there (who I presume is often taking photos at this weekly event) who took some photos of us and gave us his card so we could see them online.

I wanted to use the photos for our Facebook page and just have them as keepsakes. I emailed him, asking if this would be alright (and that credit would be given to him), and he just replied that "Downloads (and prints) are available at a very reasonable price on my website."

I know that I do not own any rights to the images because he is the creator. However, I do recall a photography teacher of mine a few years back mentioning that if we are to use any photographs commercially, the models must sign a release. I am not debating whether or not the guy has a right to photograph me, as I was in a public setting and is completely allowed, but if he has the right to sell these images without the consent of the band.

If not illegal, is this a practice frowned upon in photography communities? I mean, he came to a free event, to photograph unpaid musicians so he could sell them on his website without consent.

  • How do I set up a powerline LAN?

My grandmother had her carpet replaced, so we had to pack up the computer, and now when I went to set it back up for her, the internet will not work. The computer was originally set up with an Asoka PlugLink thing. I haven't seen these before, but from my understanding, there is one hooked directly to the router and plugged into the wall, data is transmitted through the AC power system and to another PlugLink that goes from the wall, into the desktop computer.

The router and modem were never uninstalled, and the wireless internet is working right now, as I am posting this from my laptop. Any ideas for what the issue could be? It shouldn't need the driver re-installed or anything.

  • Are there any words synonymous with duality?

I'm writing a paper on Josef Albers. His artwork is highly illusionistic, which leads to the inability of the viewer to decipher the spacial planes of the artwork. Also, because of the ambiguity in his work (most of it is concentric squares) they can take on myriad meanings, depending on the viewer's own psyche. I'm trying to find a word the great many ways each piece can be interpreted. Polysemy is the closest thing I could find, but from my understanding, that is usually applied to written language.

    Duality isn't extreme enough.

  • Should I buy a new Wii Nunchuck?

My art history teacher just finished her PhD and celebrates her new degree by playing Zelda games during all her newfound free time. I haven't played any Zelda games since Majora's Mask, but all the talk about Zelda lately has made me itch to play it again. So tonight, I went out and bought Twilight Princess for Wii. I got home and discovered that my nunchuck has gone missing. The only thing that is open right now is the Wal Mart a few miles away. Should I go out and buy a new nunchuck tonight, or just wait til I find one on craigslist since people usually sell them for a couple bucks?

What I really want to know is, is this game super totally kickass? Is the degree of kickassedness so grandeur that it's worth 20 dollars and all the time I will waste this week playing, even though it's finals? I'm super totally prepared for my finals, and have very little left to do on my final projects, so it wouldn't be a huge educational loss to play this game all night.

  • Where can I gain access to letters exchanged between early 20th century artists?

I'm looking specifically for the letters that the Fauves exchanged over the short 3 year span that they were practicing. Even more specifically, the ones between Matisse and Derain, Matisse and Picasso, and Picasso and Braque (even though they are more relative to Cubism).

Online sources would be more convenient, but if anyone knows of somewhere in San Diego, California that happens to have a few of these letters, that would be really cool.

  • What word am I looking for?

I'm writing a paper and there is a very specific word (may be a two word phrase) that I'm looking for. The sentence goes as follows:

"The beautifully articulated contours of the cutouts provide enough information to give life to each character, but not so much that the meaning and story are already decided for the viewer as was the ________ of Renaissance art."

The word basically means it was very important.

  • Why is Genesis so contradictory?

I've started reading the Bible lately because I come from a muslim-christian family and want to learn about both religions that I took no part in my entire life. I find it crazy how misogynistic it is (the serpent's punishment for tempting Adam and Eve is that he must crawl on his belly for the rest of his days and eat dust; Eve's punishment for being tempted—even though she did not know right from wrong because God never gave her the ability to—was that she would experience great pain in childbirth and here "desire would be for [her] husband, and he will rule over [her]." (Gen 3:16) Then in the next verse, God states that because Adam listened to his wife (rather than control her) his punishment would be that he would have to labor for his entire life to grow food to sustain his family. Not only do these punishments seem extremely unfair for the same offense, I don't understand why God expected that they would listen to Him when he never gave them the ability to know it was wrong to eat from the tree. The only thing I can think of is that this is an example of why we need to have faith in God, and there is no need to think for ourselves.

Also, on the issue of incest. If incest is a sin punishable by stoning, why did God not create several families. I can see why he would make Eve from Adam, for it was a symbol of the bond that they shall share forever in marriage. But if God can do anything, why not make another family that would be able to perpetuate the human race? I feel like God did not plan his creation very well and rather than admit he messed up, he blamed it on the humans and wiped them out with a flood. Then he forced Noah to repopulate the Earth with his own family. It's no wonder that Cain killed his brother, because they had to compete for their mother, who was the only female on Earth. My view is that God set up the human race to become sinners by refusing to allow us to have a moral code that we were aware of, but also by forcing us to repopulate by incest. Furthermore, incest would also have biological consequences because of the higher rate of congenital defects caused by two people having recessive genes.

Someone please make me stop resenting Christianity by clearing up this demented book in the Bible. I want to understand it, I want to like it, but I can not respect a religion that is built on such misogynistic ideals and has a God that claims to be forgiving, but does nothing but punish his creations for his own shortcomings.

  • Where does God go when he dies?

God can do anything, therefore he can die. But without God, is there a heaven? If he cannot go to heaven because it does not exist, then he would surely go to hell. But hell surely would not take such a holy being.

Would he be stuck in purgatory for the rest of eternity?

  • How safe is corn syrup when used for something other than eating?

If I were to use a corn syrup based paint in a sexual setting, would it be safe if some of it inadvertently got inside of someone's body (ie in a vagina or anus?) The paint would consist only of clear corn syrup and food coloring. I'm mostly concerned with things like yeast infections or UTI's. It's not going to be like using corn syrup paint as lube, I just don't want to have to be extremely cautious not get any of it in anyone.

I just put the question in the allergies section, because I really don't know where else to put it...this is a very odd inquiry, I know.

  • Most convenient file type to have a logo?

I just made a little logo for a little business I'm starting up. I was wondering what the most convenient format to have a logo is in. I know I will use it on business cards and documents, but I want to have a version of it saved that will be easy to put on anything in any size.

I'm using Illustrator CS5 and have ID and PS CS5 as well.

  • How do I add an operating system to my mac?

I was wondering if anyone knew of an online tutorial on how to install OS Lion over Snow Leopard. I would like to be able to boot my computer under either operating system, if there is a way to switch between the two versions without having to power down, that would be fantastic. Thank you in advance! :)

  • Suggestions for a vegetarian diet?

I have been vegetarian for 3 years and after taking college health classes and doing research about certain foods, I am afraid of most of the vegetarian bases. Like tofu because I have heard about unprocessed soy being a cause of thyroid disease. And sietan because it is wheat gluten and gluten is supposedly bad for humans in large amounts. I was told that none of this was ever solidly proven, but the theory has to have some basis. Are there any other economical and healthy vegetarian/vegan alternatives?

  • Can I bring my medicine on a plane?

I am a medical marijuana patient in the state of California. If I were to take a plane from my home to another city within California, would I be allowed to take my medicine on the plane? Also, is my recommendation honored by other state governments? And if I can take it on the plane, do I check it in, or carry it on? And should I declare it, or just pretend like I don't have it?

  • Suspension groups near San Diego?

I've wanted to do suspension for a long time. I don't really know where to start in finding someone willing to take me through the experience. I am willing to travel as far as LA for this, but would prefer to do it in my home town of San Diego.

Does anyone know where I should start looking? Also, how much does a suspension generally cost?

  • How to quick stretch a septum?

I want to stretch my septum to a 2g or 4g and my piercer told me that quick stretching is supposed to hurt less. I know it's unhealthy and I risk a blowout, but I was wondering how long should I wait between stretches? I've been at 10g for about 2 months, then I stretched to 8g about 3 days ago. Should I wait another week or so until going to a 6? Also, my stretches have been rather painless thus far. Is stretching septums really as bad as I hear, or should I just follow the recommended rest periods and deal with scar tissue?
