  • Could this explain the high percentage of incarceration in the US?

As you may be aware, the US incarcerates a significantly higher percentage of the population compared to other first world countries with about 737 people per 100,000 incarcerated on average compared to Russia and England which incarcerate 581 and 145 people per 100,000 respectively. Experts have come up with many explanations for this, however I think I may have come up with an alternative interpretation for this statistic.

The US population uses private transportation at far greater numbers than most of the world. Most European countries and many Asian countries rely mostly on public transportation. The reason this is important is because the use of private vehicles significantly increases the likelihood of contact with law enforcement. In fact, the largest number of arrests in the US result from traffic stops by police officers and the large percentage of these arrests are secondary to the reason for the stop. My hypothesis is that US citizens don't necessarily commit crimes in greater numbers than the rest of the world, but that the use of private transportation increases the rate of contact with police, and by proxy the number of arrests.

  • How much would it cost to get a lawyer to obtain medical records from biological parents?

I was adopted at two days old and am currently in my 20s. It was a closed adoption so I have no idea (or any will to know) who my biological parents are. However, I have some health concerns for which it would be helpful to have a full health record of my biological parents. Since it was a closed adoption, I am assuming I will need a lawyer to go to a judge for access to the adoption records. However, money is tight at the monent so I would like to get a rough idea of how much this will cost to hire a lawyer for. Any information is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • First time smoking brisket, need advice?

I purchased my first smoker this week (Masterbuilt electric) and I am planning on making a brisket this weekend. I've got almost everything I need to know down pat, however one thing I'm not sure about is injections. I see some people injecting their briskets, and some people don't. I have heard some people say that every competition smoker will inject their briskets, and others say it's not for beginners. I'm just not sure whether I should or not. I'm not looking to make some sort of crazy brisket. I just want your basic tender, juicy, smoky brisket. I also don't want to end up with something dry and uneatable. Any advice on this is appreciated. Also, any tips on smoking liquids (water or juice), also if and when to wrap a brisket is appreciated.

  • Is there anything that prevents computer processors from getting physically larger in dimension rather than smaller and smaller transistors?

I am just curious if there is any type of physical limit based on the physics involved with silicon chips, specifically computer processors from being physically larger in terms of die size to increase performance. For example, Intel s Skylake chips are 9mm by 13mm and use 14nm transistors. Is there anything stopping someone like Intel from creating a die that is say 2in by 2in using the same 14nm transistors just having a lot more of them over a larger area, rather than more and more in the same size or smaller area? Does it have to do with cooling? If anyone could explain this, that would be great.

  • Should the NFL ditch the Pro Bowl?

This year's Pro Bowl was basically a bore fest. It wasn't the worst game ever, but it was beyond obvious that the players just weren't into it at all. With the stakes so low (essentially nothing) and the risk of injury so high, it has to be hard for players to want to compete in a way that it anything more than marginally entertaining. Yes, joining the ranks as a Pro Bowl player certainly adds some value to a players stock, but that's about all the game has going for it at the moment.

What do you think? Should the NFL drop the Pro Bowl? If not should they make changes? If so should it be replaced by something else?

  • When does debt collection become maliscious?

I have a debt collector calling me absolutely non stop. To be fair, it is a legitimate debt, and I have spoken to them to told them to send me a letter, and that as soon as I could, I would take care of it. Unfortunately I had some emergencies come up and simply can't spare much to pay the debt. The made me a payment plan offer, but it's more than I can afford for maybe the next month or so. Anyway, since I spoke to them, they have been calling me 8-10 times a day (some days as many as 20 times) from 8:00 in the morning, to about 9:00 at night. I don't answer, they never leave a message, and they just keep calling and calling. If fact, in the time I took me to write this question they have called twice. What I want to know is when does debt collection become maliscious/illegal? I have every intention of paying the debt no matter what, but I do want to be treated fairly and within the law.

  • Some people really think the earth is flat?

I had no idea that there was an entire group of so called "flat earthers" who seriously think the earth is flat. There are apparently even some celebrities who believe it. I feel like other than proving that the sky is blue, there aren't too many more ideas that can be incontrovertibly proven with as much evidence than there is for showing that the earth is a sphere. Are these people really serious? Or just the greatest trolls of all time?

  • Nitrous Oxide side effects?

I have a series of dental work I have to get done coming up with the first appointment earlier today. I have always had anxiety at the dentist so we decided to try Nitrous Oxide to help with that. However, maybe a minute after turning on the nitrous, I started to feel really warm in my face and neck, so warm that they actually had to shut the nitrous off. Does anyone know is this is a common side effect? I take a pretty strong narcotic medicine on a daily basis if that makes a difference.

  • Is EA going to screw up Mass Effect: Andromeda?

I recently read an article where in an investor meeting, EA CEO Andrew Wilson said that they were looking to break beyond the "core gamer" with Mass Effect Andromeda. To me that sounds like EA is going to force Bioware to pander, or that EA is going to go on some crazy marketing campaign and try and sell books, maybe a movie or TV show. Don't get me wrong here, publishers trying to break away from the core audience has been happening a lot recently. For example the WoW movie, and possibly a Last of Us movie, and numerous other examples. However Mass Effect as a franchise has been almost completely unmolested by these types of side shows. There has been a bit of it with ME2 and ME3, but for the most part the game has been true to core gamers (despite some storyline controversies), and my worry is that EA is going to push this "breaking out from core gamers" thing to a level that might be a huge problem for Andromeda. What do you think?

  • Felt like I was going faint/pass out, why?

For the second time in about a two week period, I faint/pass out. The first time it happened, I was in the middle of what ended up being a nearly week long migraine; I was sitting in a rocking chair and started getting a tightness in my stomach, then my breaths started to sharp and shallow, and I started to feel faint. My roommate yelled up to me to ask him a question, and I could barely get an answer out. Tonight I had exactly the same thing happen, except I am not having a migraine. What is causing this to happen? I will say that I recently started taking Excedrin Migraine (acetaminophen/aspirin/caffeine) to stave off an ever increasing frequency of migraines, however I have found the Excedrin to be very effective for relief. I took one tablet this morning because I felt a headache starting to come on, and wanted to get on top of the pain before it got worse. Now, I have taken acetaminophen for years with no issue, but I do not drink any caffeinated beverages, and have only taken aspirin maybe three times my whole life. Could it be the aspirin or caffeine that is causing this to happen? I also take an opioid narcotic called buprenorphine on a daily basis. Any help with this is appreciated.

  • If you could live in an alternate video game or movie universe, which would it be?

    -Star Wars

    -Star Trek

    -Tamriel (Elder Scrolls)

-Middle Earth (Lord of the Rings)

    -Mass Effect

    -Halo

    -Bioshock

-The Last of Us (I included this because I think N.D. created a beautiful world in the game)

    -Azeroth (World of Warcraft)

    -Final Fantasy (any of them)

    -Other?

I would probably pick Mass Effect, Tamriel, and Star Wars. What about you?

  • Where do I connect fan controller and CPU fan?

My Phanateks Enthoo Pro case has a PWM fan controller behind the side panel. It has a SATA power connection, six 3 pin fan headers, and a cable with a four pin connector that says "To Motherboard CPU fan". If I plug this into the motherboard CPU fan header, where do I plug the four pin header for the CPU fan itself?
