Cat Bitting?
Sometimes when I am patting or playing with my cat he will bite me pretty hard. After he bites me and I pull back from him and he will run away from me. But then he will come right back (like his stalking me) and try to bite me again. He never brings blood but it still hurts. Why does he do this?

It's love. Unfortunately he knows know other way to show his affection. It can also be his way of showing you he's the boss. The stalking you see after, is his way of checking your reaction. He may think he's the boss, and he is checking your reaction for submissiveness and fear. Never back down, and don't show any fear. If your not the lead boss, training can be very difficult if not impossible. Just keep letting him know your not pleased with his way of showing how much he likes you. By saying "no" in a firm tone of voice he will get the message. Although his affections are painful, making him realize this is important. Biting back is helpful if you know how to do it with out getting clawed in the face.
Cat training can be difficult, understanding cats, gaining their trust, and using reverse physiology works best when training cats. He can be trained not to bite, but knowing how is just as complicated as they are. When a cat performs in a manner that is unacceptable letting him know that with in 2 seconds is critical, otherwise he will have no idea whats bugging you. A very beneficial tool for your problem would be a training collar. A training collar can instantly send a message at the instant the unwanted behavior starts. Watch your cat closely for behavior patterns that preempt the acts you don't like is also important. This way you'll have a better chance of catching him in the act with the proper response necessary to avert the behavior.
Make training fun play time, and something your cat thinks he wants to do, instead of something he has to do. Good luck and feel free to contact me if you have any other problems with your cat.

I should be a pro on this question, because I allow biting in playtime with my cats. Now, usually when the cat bites you when your patting him, petting him whatever- its a sign he's not a fan of that. Or maybe the style of petting, whatever. Now when your playing with your cat, they bite because its how they play with other cats. Its a natural effect they have, and you have to teach them that you are their owner, not their playmate. When he bites you when your petting him, or justwalking by or whatever, dont squirt him, dont smack'm or push'm away. Screech as loud and high as you can the word OWWWWWWW. It'll scare'm pretty good the first few times, and that'll help them realize that they are doing something to you that you dont like, and that it hurts you. ( im a feral handler at a shelter for cats and this works wonders) During playtime, if you allow biting during play only, don't screech unless its really hard and you feel he's playing to rough. It takes a awhile for the them to "get" everything, but with time and constant play like this, they'll understand that hard biting hurts you, and it'll dimish. My boys (4male cats) have learned that playtime is the only biting time. I encourage it whe i play, so they can just get it out of their system, and I believe its worked this way because I have young children whom have NEVER recieved a bite, or a claw mark. That and I think they know the difference between moms hand, and their lil hands. They arent big biters now, only in play. Good luck, i hope this works for you as it has for me and many other cats that have come across my path. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

1. Over stimulation in petting. The clue is that they start snapping their tale.
2. If you're not rough housing, it may just be a love bite. They will only draw blood if you are hurting them, or upsetting them. It's their way of saying 'STOP'.
3. If a toy is involved, it can be a stalking game.
4. If you have several cats in the house, the Alpha Male must be watched. They are very territorial, and some times butt biters of the other cats.
Good luck and warm regards.

It's already been stated, and I'm agreeing; squirt him with water when he bites you. If it hurts, it's NOT love bites. Love bites are so gentle, you barely feel 'em....and it happens when they're being loved on, not when they're playing. Get the biting in check now or you'll end up with an adult biter....which isn't fun at all.
I know a lot of people will say "He's just playing, he'll grow out of it." But how do they think adult biters got into the habit? They started "playing" as kittens and no one corrected the behavior, so they think it's perfectly OK to do it as adults.

One of my cats does that. Sometimes is "love bite" and other times i think he just doesnt want to be petted anymore its just in the cats attitude.

Keep a water gun by your side and when your cat bites you hard, squirt them. Kitty will associate his hate for water with biting and it should stop.

I've been told they're "love bites", which is what they'd do to another cat when they get excited.

You know cats used to rule the world.
But they were smart enough to figure out that the world's problems were unsolvable.
So, they turned the world over to a lesser species, one that was smart enough to try, but dumb enough to not be able to figure out it was unfix-able.
That is why all cats look at humans 'that way'.
Your cat may be planning to kill you & reassert it's dominant nature.

Maybe they are love love bites and he wants to play. or he just dosn't like a specific spot you are scratching... Play around with it and see how he acts.
