Can anyone recommend a good slicer / food processor?

I'm looking for answers from people who've owned and used, your opinion and suggestions... not just a search result link.

My prep-time in the kitchen at home is far too arduous when I'm cutting up veggies (mostly). The most common things I slice are Garlic, Onion, Pepper, Mushrooms, tomatoes and cheeses.

I wouldn't mind something more versatile as long as it's not enormous in the kitchen. I really would like something that cuts variable sizes; pureed, minced, fine, etc.

I will pay for a quality product if necessary. Something that will last a good while.

Thanks,

Update:

What do you use to mince garlic, or have finely chopped onion squares?

I have a Cuisinart Food Processor and I have one of those cheap mandolines for slicing fresh fruits/vegetables; I use it way more than the Food Processor because it is so handy. I keep it near my prep station and usually just rinse it off under the faucett after using it and place it in a dish drainer beside the sink. The Food Processor is heavy and difficult to lug around the kitchen. It does a good job when I need multiple veggies to process. It does shred cheese if you have the right blade for that, these days, I just buy the cheese already shredded.

I highly reccomend the Borner V Slicer. But I threw the safety guard gadget that came with it, threw it away and got a butcher's glove to use instead. (You can get a Gardener's Glove instead of the Butcher's Glove; it's cheaper and easier to find, it looks like this...)

And the handy mandoline looks like this...

The thing about the mandoline is that with the cheap one I have, you really need to wear the gloves to protect your fingers from getting cut off. Not kidding !!

With the mandoline, I get really nice professional onion slices for hamburgers and sandwiches. Same for tomatoes. I can't get those with the older model food processor. I finally decided I needed them both, but I use the mandoline much more often than the food processor. I NEVER put my mandoline in the dishwasher... that would dull the blade. A dishwasher is really rough on knives and blades. Give them a quick swish in a sink of warm soapy water and rinse. If they're not very soiled, then just rinse under the faucett. I'll probably need it again in just a few minutes.

My Cuisinart is 25 years historical and i have certainly not had a second of predicament with it. However, I purchased a Cuisinart blender final 12 months and it simplest lasted 9 months with just occasional use and the customer carrier division was impolite with me after I contacted them. I love my food processor, however I must marvel if the merchandise are as just right as they used to be. I see food processors in charity retail outlets at all times and most of them don't appear like they've even been used. I might be tempted to appear for certainly one of them first. The one i've does not look any unique, fairly, from the new ones. The designs have not transformed a lot.
