  • Medical Deductions For an Individual?

If I drive one or more of my neighbors to a medical appointment, of any nature, on a more or less regular basis, would I be able to deduct the mileage as a medical expense on my own return? If not as a medical expense, could I deduct the mileage as a charitable expense?

Also, in your reply could you, in your answer, if possible, provide me with location of where this information is located in publication 15?

  • Reporting mortgage interest that has been received on your return?

A neighbor of mine has provided his child with the money needed to purchase a home and will be issuing his child a form 1098 so that the child will be able to deduct the mortgage interest on her or his return.

Where does my neighbor report the interest income received on his return? Does he report in the same manner that he would report interest from a bank or does he need to complete a schedule C and report the income on this form?

  • Why is Spam so difficult to report on Yahoo lately?

I have noticed what appears, at least in my mind, an increase in the amount of Spam that is being posted as an answer to questions under taxes in the U. S., such as the following answer and yet when I click on the red flag to report this as a violation, nothing appears to occur. What is going on?

Samex was established in Australia - the world's leading red meat export nation - in 1978, and quickly became one of the country's principal meat export trading companies. Our business was founded on the export of small stock, including sheep, lamb and goat, and quickly expanded to include beef and poultry as well as a full range of offals.

The recent acquisition of Peterborough meatworks means Samex is now the largest exporter of camel meat in the world.

  • I am unable to view a power point presentation?

Within the last week, I have received three e-mails with a power point presentation. Each time that I click on the attachment, it does open up, but for whatever else it may be worth, my computer freezes up and I am unable to proceed through the presentation as I was able to do in the past. At this point, I need to hold down the ctrl, alt and del keys and terminate the program. What is causing this? Is it possible that somehow my power point program has been corrupted? If so, how do I fix it and remedy this situation?

  • Head of Household vs. Married Filing Jointly?

For the year in which a spouse dies, the surviving spouse can continue to file as "Married Filing Jointly". There is no doubt in my mind regarding this option.

However, I am not quite as clear as to how to handle an individual who files as "Head of Household". If the person that qualifies the taxpayer to file as "Head of Household" dies at anytime during the tax year, when the person who makes this claim goes to file their return, can they still claim the deceased as a dependent and qualify for the "Head of Household" filing status.

In your reply, if you so choose to do so, could you provide me with information as to how you arrived at your conclusion with a link to a specific IRS publication where this information is located.

  • I have a correction as to when the first date for filing your 2012 Tax Return?

IRS Plans Jan. 30 Tax Season Opening For 1040 Filers

WASHINGTON — Following the January tax law changes made by Congress under the American Taxpayer Relief Act (ATRA), the Internal Revenue Service announced today it plans to open the 2013 filing season and begin processing individual income tax returns on Jan. 30.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns on that date after updating forms and completing programming and testing of its processing systems. This will reflect the bulk of the late tax law changes enacted Jan. 2. The announcement means that the vast majority of tax filers -- more than 120 million households -- should be able to start filing tax returns starting Jan 30.

The IRS estimates that remaining households will be able to start filing in late February or into March because of the need for more extensive form and processing systems changes. This group includes people claiming residential energy credits, depreciation of property or general business credits. Most of those in this group file more complex tax returns and typically file closer to the April 15 deadline or obtain an extension.

“We have worked hard to open tax season as soon as possible,” IRS Acting Commissioner Steven T. Miller said. “This date ensures we have the time we need to update and test our processing systems.”

The IRS will not process paper tax returns before the anticipated Jan. 30 opening date. There is no advantage to filing on paper before the opening date, and taxpayers will receive their tax refunds much faster by using e-file with direct deposit.

“The best option for taxpayers is to file electronically,” Miller said.

The opening of the filing season follows passage by Congress of an extensive set of tax changes in ATRA on Jan. 1, 2013, with many affecting tax returns for 2012. ‬While the IRS worked to anticipate the late tax law changes as much as possible, the final law required that the IRS update forms and instructions as well as make critical processing system adjustments before it can begin accepting tax returns.

The IRS originally planned to open electronic filing this year on Jan. 22; more than 80 percent of taxpayers filed electronically last year.

Who Can File Starting Jan. 30?

The IRS anticipates that the vast majority of all taxpayers can file starting Jan. 30, regardless of whether they file electronically or on paper. The IRS will be able to accept tax returns affected by the late Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) patch as well as the three major “extender” provisions for people claiming the state and local sales tax deduction, higher education tuition and fees deduction and educator expenses deduction.

    Who Can’t File Until Later?

There are several forms affected by the late legislation that require more extensive programming and testing of IRS systems. The IRS hopes to begin accepting tax returns including these tax forms between late February and into March; a specific date will be announced in the near future.

The key forms that require more extensive programming changes include Form 5695 (Residential Energy Credits), Form 4562 (Depreciation and Amortization) and Form 3800 (General Business Credit). A full listing of the forms that won’t be accepted until later is available on IRS.gov.

As part of this effort, the IRS will be working closely with the tax software industry and tax professional community to minimize delays and ensure as smooth a tax season as possible under the circumstances.

Updated information will be posted on IRS.gov.

  • What do you know, if any about income which is classified as carried interest?

Supposedly, Mitt Romney derives income from something called "Carried Interest" and pays virtually no Federal Income Tax on this type of income. What exactly is "Carried Interest" and how would the ordinary citizen avail him or herself of this loophole?

  • Suggested Sights to See in New Mexico?

I am thinking of taking a motor trip from Illinois to the State of New Mexico. Of course, along the way, I would like to as much as possible along the route that I will be taking.

I plan on leaving on the or about the 15th of May and hopefully will be back at home no later than May 29th or 30th.

I would like to hear from others who have made this drive. What did you see that would be of interest to a tourist along the route? What would you recommend seeing as I go along my merry way?

Any suggestions and/or comments that you may have would be most appreciated.

  • Why would a grown man want to have a Pony Tail?

Why would any man, and especially one who is in his senior years want to walk around with long hair which some of them fix into a pony tail? Are they really women who have been born as men?

I do not understand the allure, if any, of this particular hairstyle for men.

  • Tax-ability of income received from the sale of antiques?

If an individual owns several antiques and proceeds to sell them, under what conditions would the sale be considered to be taxable income? If the sale of their antiques is not being conducted for the sole purpose of generating income but merely to dispose of them, similar to an individual holding a garage sale on an annual basis, is it possible that the income generated from the sale of their antiques would not be considered to be a taxable event.

In your reply, if you choose to do so, could you provide me with a link to the source of your information. I have already checked publication 525 on the IRS website and was unable to locate anything relating to an occasional sale of property.

  • Spy-bot Program Assistance is Requested.?

I am not what you would call a computer Expert or geek by any stretch of the imagination. A close relative recently installed a program on my computer called "Spy-bot". He claims that this is a worthwhile program to have on my desktop computer.

However, I was looking for a laptop computer earlier today at Office Max and the sales person opined that Spy-bot was not a worthwhile program and could cause me additional problems as time goes by.

I would be interested in hearing your opinion regarding this software and whether you think that I should remove it from my desktop or should I continue to use it on a periodic basis?

  • Home owner associations?

I live in a community that is regulated by a Seven Member Board of Directors who utilize the services of a professional management company. We are located in the State of Illinois which may or may not be relevant.

The management company has a website that could be utilized much more than it is currently, at least in my humble opinion. I would like to see the minutes of the Board's monthly meetings posted on the website maintained by the management company and I would also like to see the posting of the financial statements prepared by the management company for viewing by any interested resident within our community on the management company's website. However, the board has thus far refused to do to have the financial statements made available to each resident who desires to view these statements nor will they post the minutes of their monthly meeting on this website either. Is there anything that I can do to force the board to be more open and have the financial statements posted on the management company's website each and every month? Are there any state laws within the State of Illinois that I could cite to force them to make this information more readily available?
