  • Recovering an Automatically Deleted File that Word Put in a Temp Directory?

I simply can not believe MS Word did this to me. Please help.

A client sent me a zip file. I put it in the proper directory. I opened it and modified it (extensively) and saved it as a new file. I did not notice that Word had decided to PUT IT IN A DIFFERENT -- and TEMPORARY -- DIRECTORY. Ugh!! It was C:\Users\MyName\AppData\Local\Temp, I think. Then I guess it decided that a couple of days had passed and deleted it. It was less than a week ago that I last worked on it.

    So, I...

    - Searched my entire hard drive for one of the words in the file name...nothing (or at least nothing useful)

    - Checked the recycle bin...nothing

    - Checked "recent files" in Word...nothing

    - Went to C:\Users\MyName\AppData\Local\Temp and looked. There were 1,000+ garbagey-named files (CVR474C.tmp.cvr and whatnot)...and nothing useful

    Help!! :(

  • Members of organized religions, I have a question for you?

I understand why people believe in God. I believe in God. What I don't understand is why you think *your* particular book and set of rules is the correct one while all differing beliefs are incorrect.

The answer of "faith" only gets you as far as "why do you believe in God?" It doesn't answer the question, "why do you believe *this* book instead of *that* book."

    Thanks for any insight.

  • What does Costco do with the stuff that's returned?

I'm sure that if I return something completely unusable (like the time some bread went moldy within a couple of days after purchase), it goes straight into the trash. I'm pretty sure some things go back on the shelf, too.

But what about, say, half a package of canned goods that are within their expiration date? Or electronics that work but that are out of the packaging? You know, stuff they can't sell, but that would be silly to throw out...?

    Thanks for any answers!

  • Downloading multiple pdf files from web simultaneously?

    Hi!

There's a web page with about 150 pdf files that can be downloaded and I want 'em all. However, I'm not particularly interested in doing the usual right-click-then-save route 150 times.

Is there a way to just download a whole page to my PC along with everything it links to (so I would have all 150 pdf files on my PC)?

Or, is there a way to just say "please download all the highlighted files"? I don't need to change any of the default filenames (so I would never need a "save as" vs. a "save").

    Thanks for any help! :)

  • Can I use a substitute for Shout Color Catchers?

I really like those little things, but I wonder if there might be a better (cheaper/more-easily available) alternative. Does anyone successfully use anything else in their laundry to catch excess dye floating around?

  • Are you "support staff"? If so, what does your boss do that ticks you off?

Also, what could your boss (or another person who gives you work to do) do to cause you to like him or her more? (And, please, ignore the obvious things that only a relatively high-up person could do such as give raises or extra time off.)

    Thanks for your input!

  • If someone answers a Q with "Honestly, I...<answer>" does that lead you to think they weren't honest before?

Especially with respect to job interviews, the common wisdom that answering a question with "Frankly..." or "Honestly..." is a bad idea because it will lead the other person to think that you've "just now gotten around to being honest."

Personally, I think that's hooey and that others don't really think that. After all, who hasn't had something that they didn't really want to discuss ("why did you leave your job after only a year?") in an interview because they were embarrassed, etc., but still knew they had to come clean about whatever detail it was?

What do you think? If someone answers a question with "Well, frankly..." do you think that means they've been dishonest before that answer?

  • Do credit card companies feel guilty about 20% interest? Should they?

On the one hand, adults have to make good decisions for themselves and the credit card company isn't responsible for their customers' spending habits.

On the other hand, credit card companies make it soooo easy to overspend and soooo difficult to pay off a large balance.

    What say you?

  • Who uses the specific-identification of shares method of accounting?

There are currently four ways recognized by the Internal Revenue Service

(IRS) for calculating your personal cost basis:

    1. Average Cost Single Category

    2. Average Cost Double Category

    3. First In First Out (FIFO)

    4. Specific Identification

I want to use the last one, Specific Identification of shares and I'd like to use it to dollar-cost average with a mutual fund.

What company can I do this with and have *them* keep the records? (For example, Vanguard doesn't do it.)

  • Help! Adjusted-basis nightmare with dollar-cost averaging?

I want to invest frequently (weekly, if I can find a mutual fund with a relatively low minimum investment) in a mutual fund or set of mutual funds. However, I want to be able to track the cost/adjusted basis (for tax purposes) easily and I don't always keep the world's best records. This is complicated by the fact that (1) the cost will (obviously) be different per share each time and (2) there's that whole mess with undistributed gains (so, if I understand correctly, I pay the taxes on the shares and reduce my basis?)

So, I want a company that will do that stuff for me automatically and I'm not enthusiastic about paying GainsKeeper a bunch of money each year to do it.

Please provide any thoughts you have on this subject (and, if you don't know what adjusted-basis is and/or don't really understand my question and are just trying to get 2 points for answering a question, please don't waste my time.)

    Many thanks!!

  • Where can I buy bulk/wholesale Campbell's soup?

I've got several Campbell's favorites and it seems that I might as well buy by the case (vs. $1.72 per can at the local grocery store). Does anyone know where I might be able to do that (via the web or another option)?

    Thanks!

  • Horse trailering -- I typed for 5 minutes but the Q was closed when I tried to submit it - here's your answer

I'm going to reiterate a suggestion I've seen several times already: get the Parelli horse-loading DVD.

Do not: blindfold the horse or sedate the horse (except in the case of an genuine emergency where you truly didn't have the time to adequately train the horse beforehand) or lure the horse on with treats.

Horses have a hierarchy of needs:

    (1) safety

    (2) comfort

    (3) play

    (4) food.

This means that, until a horse's safety issues are met, they are not going to be persuaded by comfort or the promise of food. For example, if I flicked you repeatedly in the shoulder, you might move away from me a little to get me to stop. If, on the other hand, I was flicking you on the right side and on the left side was the edge of the cliff, I'm not going to talk you into dropping off the cliff simply because I'm annoying you. The same goes for whacking a horse on the butt with a broom, or flicking with a whip, etc. If a horse thinks it's going to die if it gets in that trailer, no a

  • After a purchase, people try to justify it to themselves. Marketers have a term for that. What is it?

For example, say I bought a new coat on impulse. Then, when I got home, I might start to say, "well, my old coat was a little worn...and I guess I like this color better...and it's better to have two coats than one...." (And all of this occurs *after* the decision to buy the coat has already been made.)

    Thanks! :)

  • Amazon prime - who would pay for this??

Here are the benefits of Amazon Prime (from their website)

    - Unlimited Express Shipping

    - Free Two-Day Shipping on over a million in-stock items sold by Amazon.com

    - Overnight Shipping for only $3.99 per item—order as late as 6:30 PM ET

    - Ship to any eligible address in the contiguous United States

    - Effortless Shopping

    - No minimum purchase required

    - No need to consolidate items to save on shipping

    - Convenient Sharing

    - Share the benefits of your Amazon Prime membership with up to four family members living in the same household

    ------------------

All this for $80 per year. It's not available to businesses.

So, why, WHY, would anyone pay $80 per year to get their books shipped free via 2-day shipping (no minimum order) vs. 3-to-5-day shipping with a minimum order of $25.

Seriously, I don't get it. Please, someone explain it to me. :)

  • Are you a new-shoe person or an old-shoe person?

New-shoe person: "I don't care if my feet hurt, as long as I look goooood."

Old-shoe person: "These shoes are comfortable and not old enough to attract anyone's attention in a negative way, so I'm wearing these!"

    And, why?

  • How much credit card debt do you have? What did you spend the money on?

We hear so much about how much credit card debt everyone has but rarely what people spent the money on. So, I ask you: how much credit card debt do you have? Did you spend most of it on stuff you genuinely needed (like an ER visit for a broken arm), on stuff that will pay off in the long run (like education) or on things that you, realistically, did not need (new shoes if you already have plenty of shoes, a big TV if your small TV still worked fine, dinner out, entertainment, etc.)? (Also, how old are you?)

  • All you level 3 people (and above) -- why do you do it?

For all of you who have answered hundreds of questions with thoughtful, thorough answers, I have two more questions for you.

    (1) Why do you do it?

    (2) How many hours per week do you spend looking for questions, researching answers and typing them in?
