  • Do I have Aspergers and does it matter?

I was doing some research to find out why I begin to rock my body side to side as I transition to and from sleep. I have done this to lesser degrees since I was an infant. (I am in my mid 40s). I don't do it intentionally. I just catch myself doing it. The rabbit trail led me to Aspergers Syndrome. I have many of the characteristics but not all.

    I like to be alone.

I am somewhat uncomfortable in crowds but tend to drive group conversations.

I have been accused of being insensative because I am literal and blunt with my speech.

I am told I have a monotone voice and tend to speak too loudly (I always thought it was because of my mild hearing loss).

I don't mind public speaking and am told I'm good at it.

I am educated and have an IQ in the 130s.

I get very angry over situations that should be simple but become difficult. (rarely regarding people).

    I like routine and structure.

I write poetry and am thrilled when a word fits the poetic puzzle perfectly.

I have a flat or serious resting affect. (People perceive me as mean before they get to know me).

I don't do well with make-believe like Halloween or Renaissance Fairs.

I can't tolerate pranks (on me or others).

And, as you can tell, I am somewhat verbose.

So, should I care? I'm mainly just curious. I still never found out about the body rocking thing.

    Thanks.

  • Should I need a permit for this pistol?

I live in Texas and I'm thinking about purchasing a Kel Tec PLR 16 in .223. The pistol is legal enough. However, the package I am interested in comes with a detached butt stock. So, if I have it shipped, is that considered "intent to assemble" a SBR? Should I file a BATFE form 1?

  • How should I put this trip together?

I am wanting to take my wife to the Hawaiian islands next year. There are trip packages that include a hotel and flight. However, I don't want to be stuck on Oahu (Honolulu). I wanted to see Maui and the big island too. I want to go for about 6-7 days. How should I book a trip so that I can spend a day or two on each of these islands and see as much as possible? Budget is around 5k but I want to be frugal within reason.

  • Is this plausible in any context? (science, food, ideas)?

If there are a limited amount of notes and a limited amount of words, is it plausible that the exact same piece of music or song could occur randomly if the two writers / performers have never met. Say, if they were separated by vast amounts of time and space.

  • If "light" has no mass, how is it propelled?

It would seem to me that there would need to be mass involved in order for something to be moved. Moreover, it seems odd that light would even maintain a speed, direction, or any other spatial laws at all.

  • What are these statements called?

We've all heard people say phrases like "I'm happier than a possum eating crap off a barbed wire fence" or "He ain't no bigger than a popcorn fart" etc. These are not euphemisms per se. What are they called? I know... Redneck but still..

  • Am I a prostitute, a slave, or fool?

I work 7 days a week. I provide for my family, the public (the entitled) and their futures. I am friggin tired! "They" have no worries because of me. Yet "they" gripe if I complain or make any demands for myself. Whining aside, who am I?

  • What French song was it?

In the movie Saving Private Ryan, they played a song on a phonograph of a French lady singing right before the final battle. Who was she and what is the tune?

  • Why do marketers do this?

So you see a commercial for a product, let's say an egg cracking device, and they draw you in. Then they show a series of morons having horrible egg-cracking experiences. There may be a lady trying to crack an egg with a pencil. Or the guy that crushes the egg in his hand as he smashes it on a bowl like an ataxic ape. Then they show the scowl on an innocent child's face as an errant eggshell fragment wounds his mouth while eating his incapable mother's quiche.

So... Why is this their approach? I find it somewhat insulting.

  • Atheists; How would you describe the color blue?

In my experience, it is common for Atheists to enter a conversation about faith with questions that imply that the "believer" is ignorant. The demand for tangible evidence to prove my position is usually their fallback position. When presented with my anecdotal "proof" of God's presence in my life, they congratulate themselves for their cleverness and exit the conversation having ignored the answer to their original question.

So. How would you describe the color blue to someone who has never seen if they asked? Keep in mind that this person thinks that your reports of this color are fabricated. Having no evidence to offer them, how could you answer their question sufficiently?

  • How can sharks do this?

I often hear it stated that sharks can detect a drop of blood from miles away. This doesn't make sense. Wouldn't the drop of blood need to dissolve into solution and its particulates travel to the shark's location before detection? Would this not take an enormous amount of time? Would the bleeder not have ample time to heal or escape etc?

  • Which is better, the first or last?

You are starving. I mean you are a post-drunk, grease-seeking fiend. You go through a drive through and order a burger and fries. You drive off, but as you do, you cram hot fries in your face. You consume your burger at some point, though you can't recall when. Then, as if you are wanting one last breath, you reach back in that bag for that last fry and you find it...

Anyway, which is better really, the first fry or the last?

  • What came first, the atom or the Adam?

PREMISE: I am a creationist. I have also studied science. So, by my calculations, the scriptures imply that the Earth (and all of creation) is approaching 10k years old. Science, on the other hand, implies that the earth itself is roughly 4.5 billion years old. I have seen the data. Carbon dating, pottasium-argon studies, and even the astronomical calculations regarding the expansion of the universe. Science has fairly well proven that the universe and the Earth itself appear to be very old.

QUESTION 1: Is it be plausible that what is measured today is subject to perspective? That is, could it be that the Earth and Universe could, in fact, be young but have the appearance of age? Could the man Adam have been analogous to this?

Using our current observational methods, would we not have seen Adam as mature though he was made only moments before we observed him? Would he not be young but have an appearance of maturity?

THE POINT: It seems plausible to me that something can appear old while being young. I have also observed the young that are relatively old.

QUESTION 2: Can our objective, scientific measures and the creationistic accounts be reconciled here?

  • Why do atheists ask spiritual questions?

I have a degree in science. Therefore, I ask questions about science. I am in the medical field so I study health related issues and yes, I ask questions. The point is, I study and investigate things that I believe in. Things that are intriguing to me. I do not believe in leprechauns but I can appreciate the metaphor. I don't eat an "organic" diet but I have yet to eat a chicken that is inorganic. Either way, I only ask questions to truly investigate something. Therefore, if one has absolutely no belief or interest in a subject, why would they ask questions about it? In addition, why would someone professing to have no belief in something demand that another forsake their belief.

  • Should I speak properly?

Background: White, American male adult, broken home etc.

As a child, I was not encouraged to be "excellent". I made poor grades in school yet I was passed on year after year to the next level. I was unable to speak or write "properly" for some years after graduation. After much remedial study, I was admitted to college where I eventually achieved a science degree. Initially, I was most challenged and fascinated by English as a subject. I have a mild speech issue (tone) due to hearing difficulties so I focused on writing primarily.

I now enjoy writing poetry and short stories etc. What I've noticed, however, is that people have strange reactions to me when I speak properly. That is, if I use the same grammatical rules while speaking that are proper for writing, it seems to be odd to them. For example; when I ask "to whom did you speak?" rather than "who did you talk to?" people pause. Should I continue to speak this way? I don't always do this mind you. I've just noticed that the more I write, the more I focus on the rules while speaking.

I will admit that I make mistakes and continue to have much to learn.

  • Do all females do this?

It has been my observation that females (to whom I am well acquainted) often tend to begin statements without defining the context or pronouns. For example; my wife, out of the blue, will just say something like "he said it will be at 4:00". My daughter will walk by me and say "do you have it?" Or my secretary will say "I called her and she said for you to call her back". After rewinding them to fill in the blanks, I find that they are completing a conversation from days or weeks before. Is this a valid observation? Is this phenomenon avoidable? Is there an app for this? : )

  • Is this common or even significant?

I am in my 40's. For years (20 or so) I have had a fairly constant and very subtle "jukebox" of sorts in my cognitive background. That is, I will catch myself humming a tune or even singing part of one while I'm performing my daily activities. I even wake up with a tune in my head. The stranger thing is that the tunes are random (no particular genre) or obscure and usually from the 60's and 70's. I don't need to hear the tune first as a trigger. I just catch myself tapping the beat to, or singing "take the money and run" or "1, 2 ahhh freak out!" etc. I'm not bothered or worried by it. Simply curious if it is common and why I might be stuck in that era.

  • Is this the proper format for this poem?

Also, does poetry have to be punctuated if in a stanza configuration?

Please tell me what you think of this one. Thanks!

Liberty is given to all by God. Then declared by poet and song. It is sustained by the blood of the free and brave. By those with sober and Godly resolve. It is lost by those that lack hindsight and expect it. It loses its value if not entertained. It is lost by those that lack the foresight to protect it. It slowly rusts if not properly maintained. It is mocked by those without God or shame. And by tyrants whose forces are large. It is forfeit when the Godly are timidly silent. And most easily when its keepers forsake their charge.

    Thanks again!

  • Am I wasting my time here?

I like to ask hard questions. I don't like drama. I just want to see what others think about certain issues. I have had a question stricken. Kind of insulted though it proved my point. Should I jump from this site? What forums should I seek for philosophical discussion?
