  • Can't make external drive bootable?

I need to install Windows onto a new hard drive. I have an .iso for Win 8.1 and a 1TB WD Passport but I can't seem to get it to a bootable state and everything I see online involves using Windows programs and I only have a Chromebook and Ultimate Boot CD at my disposal. I tried renaming the .iso to .bin and putting it on the Passport with Chromebook Recovery Utility, which appeared to work (the Passport title changed to IR5_XXXX_XX.....etc.) but no dice. I have Legacy enabled and fast boot disabled on the PC I need to install on (Pavilion 23 all-in-one) with USB hard drive top of the boot list.I've tried using Parted Magic on UBCD but not sure exactly what to do.

If anyone knows how I can use what I have to accomplish this (or if it can't be done with what I have) please let me know. This has been going on for almost 2 weeks and even tech sites didn't help as they wouldn't understand that I had no means of getting other programs or tools and no access to a Windows PC.

To emphasis, as reddit didn't understand this either, I DO NOT have access to a Windows PC. The only responses I've gotten boil down to "find a Windows PC" and after reiterating that isn't an option the follow-ups are always questions "why", yet nobody will say I can't do this with the tools I have now.

If anybody has a straight answer as far as how to do this with Chromebook or Ultimate Boot CD I'd really appreciate it because I'm about ready to smash all this stuff to pieces.

    Thanks :)

  • Forgot admin user password?

I was in the hidden admin account to see if I had personal files in it.  I have 2 user accounts and while there I decided to change my main user account to regular and the account that I never use to admin as a security measure.  I then re-hid the built-in admin.

Unfortunately I don't remember the password to the account I set as admin as I haven't used it in a year.  I can't restore or activate download programs without it.  I can't use the built-in admin because it's hidden (I do know the password for it) and I can't use runas in cmd because of group policy settings.

Do I have any options here other than 3rd party software (which I can't run anyway)?

  • Can radio stations legally play songs that aren't released as singles?

Today I heard Metallica's "Blackened" on the radio, but "Blackened" was not released as a single. It got me thinking...how is it determined what a radio station can play?

I recall an interview with Jani Lane from Warrant talking about what singles would be released from the 'Dog Eat Dog' album, and he said something like "I wish I could just give radio stations a copy (of the album) and say 'Play whatever you want.'"

Which seems to suggest that stations can't do that, but this isn't the first time I've heard a non-single on the radio. Are these stations just in violation of some kind or is it more complicated?

  • Was home taping called "bootlegging"?

The definition isn't that clear but I'm more interested in the how the word is typically used.

Was making a VHS recording of something on TV considered bootlegging.

I figured it did until I thought of referring to a certain programming block as "heavily bootlegged" which seems to imply a sale or distribution of illegal copies. If many made personal recordings with none were made for the purpose of piracy (I almost said "bootlegging") would that still be "heavily bootlegged"?

  • How do I connect Christmas lights to an audio system?

My friend had this setup years ago where the lights strung around his room would blink in time with the music he played. I figured it was just the lights being spliced into the subwoofer but I've heard it's actually a bit more complicated than that. So what exactly do I need to set this up myself?

  • Can you recommend some good browsers I've overlooked?

I reset my laptop to factory every few months or so and when I do I usually try out different browsers, AV, utilities, etc.

I'm running out of browsers that I've been curious of offhand. I know there are 100+ more but I'd just be picking at random. Can you recommend some really good ones I've overlooked? I have a Dell Inspiron (64-bit) running Windows 10.

    So far I've tried:

    Chrome

    Internet Explorer

    Firefox

    Maxthon (my favorite)

    K-Meleon

    PaleMoon

    IceDragon

    Crazy

    Torch

    Slimbrowser

    Safari

    Waterfox

    Opera

    Edge

    Airfox

    SeaMonkey

    Tor

    Lunascape

    Slimjet

  • How to change .sys file properties back to default?

I goofed when I checked the properties tab for a disabled driver called cdfs.sys,

I clicked Change on "Opens with" and seeing nothing appropriate listed hit "OK", but apparently I had selected Wordpad somehow. I couldn't set it back to "Unknown Application" so I closed the tab thinking no change would be confirmed if I didn't 'Apply" or OK but no such luck. Wordpad is now set as the default to open ALL .sys files. I'm afraid to resart or restore the computer as I don't what effect it will have, especially since I did a full infection check this session so UAC is currently disabled :/

How do I get the setting back to what it should be?

  • Your thoughts on Torch Browser?

I do a factory reset of my laptop every so often and usually take the opportunity to try out a few unfamiliar programs just for the hell of it, particularly browsers and utilities.

One browser I'm a little unsure of though is Torch. I had it a few years ago on a previous computer and liked it, but I sold the PC shortly after so I experience with it was minimal. Since that time I've heard claims that Torch is unsafe as a browser, or even just flat-out malicious itself, I have noticed, perhaps coincidentally, that many of the sites that label Torch as a virus or malware are red-marked by WOT (a flawed program itself, but still somewhat useful).

Torch seems to get mentioned very little these days either way so I'm interested in hearing the opinions of those who have used it or currently use it today. Is it safe and if so how solid is it as a browser compared)

  • Recommended Security/Cleanup programs for restored laptop?

I just reset my laptop to factory after discovering a heavy year-long spyware infection. I'd like to have a strong lineup of programs from the start that cover all the necessary bases but don't conflict with each other.

    I installed:

    Avast Internet Security

    Malwarebytes

    SuperAntiSpyware

    CCleaner

    Junkware Removal Tool

    Adwcleaner

    TempFileCleaner

    System Explorer

    Secunia PSI

    FileHippo Update Checker

    WinPatrol

    Revo Uninstaller

Are there any possible conflicts here? Anything I should add or remove?

  • old pc updates safe?

Due to multiple corruptions on my laptop I have no choice but to do a factory reset. I bought it in Sept. 2012 and I read on a tech site that older updates can carry malicious software as there is less security surrounding them now than when they were released. Is this true and if so how likely am I to be immediately infected by receiving 18 months worth of updates?

  • Can't find PC Cleaner Pro to remove it?

I tried to install AVG anti-virus and it said I need to remove PC Cleaner Pro first. There's also a message in Action Center: "PC Cleaner Pro reports that it is turned off and must be turned on manually using the program". As far as I can tell I don't have this program. I never downloaded it, it's not listed in programs, doesn't turn up in searches, and is not running in Task Manager. Are there other program names I should look for?

  • Y is a vowel when not pronounced as I?

I was taught in school that the letter Y was only considered a vowel when it was pronounced as "y", i.e. long i sound, in the word, and that "rhythm" is the only English word with no vowel. I've since been told that is untrue and that Y is a vowel except when pronounced like in "yard", while others maintain that what I was originally taught is true. Which is it?

  • How can I keep a Facebook friend from appearing on my friend's list to other people?

This person is very private and has a hidden profile. I don't want to limit his access to anything on my profile nor do I want to hide my friends list from any of my other friends.

I just want to hide this one person from everybody. Is that possible?

  • How can I fix wireless network properties?

Trying to help my roommate get on the net. Network is called TRI-D-MEX and he got the password from the owner. I know it's correct because I'm using it on my laptop but he can't connect at all. Even the owner of the network spent an hour trying to fix this but no luck.

I don't know anything about this stuff but one thing I noticed on his laptop is that it keeps changing the encryption type automatically. My laptop shows the network as WAP-Personal, AES encryption but when I try to set it that way on his laptop it changes it back to "Open" and connecting never goes beyond "validating identity". He's using an old Toshiba laptop with XP and I can't find any way to even diagnose the problem. I even tried recreating the network from scratch but that didn't work either. Any help would be appreciatied :)
