  • How do I know it's time to get a new laptop?

My Lenovo laptop is starting to have some, what I think are, overheating issues. I got the laptop late '09/early '10.

Sometimes, it would turn on, but the display won't turn on and the screen stays black. Other times, it'll turn on for a second, and I can hear the fan going and everything, but then it'll turn off, while the screen doesn't have enough time to actually start up.

I already know the trick where you disconnect the ac adapter and take out the battery, hold the power button for a minute, reconnect everything, and turn it on. This has worked in the past, but it is starting to become more frequent, and I have to repeat this process 3-5 times to get the laptop to turn on.

Also, just starting today, it started shutting off by itself. In fact, it shut off right before I was writing this question and even WHILE I was writing this question.

I read on Google that maybe the fan needed to be cleaned. So I started unscrewing the screws but a lot of stuff has built up in the screws and it's really hard to get rid of because the screws are pretty small.

Should I take this to geek squad? Is this really an overheating/dust in the fans issue or is it some sort of wiring problem? Is it time to get a new laptop? Let me know your opinions! Thanks.

  • Makeup and dry skin help?

My main issue with makeup is that I have extremely dry skin. I have tried using a cetaphil moisturizer that moisturizes my face really well but after I put on primer and BB cream, it still shows these dry patches. I tried both drugstore and higher end samples. I also tried it with both primer and bb cream on half of my face and just bb cream on the other half just to see if it was the primer or the bb cream. The non-primer side was much drier than the primer side so the primer actually helps it, but there was still some dry patches. I have also tried switching moisturizers, including a thicker night cream moisturizer but the results are still the same.

    1. Do I need a beauty blender or a flattop brush? Does it help at all whatsoever with this issue?

    2. Is it just the makeup? I thought BB cream was supposed to moisturize! :( I have extremely clear skin and no acne so I don't need foundation. I just need to even out my skin tone a little and give it a little flawless glow.

    3. Should I try mineral makeup? I heard it is the worst kind of makeup for dry skin but I heard from some who had dry skin try bare minerals and it worked for them only with the CORRECT application techniques. Should I go to Sephora and ask to try it?

    4. Should I try a dewy finishing spray and see if it helps?

This is frustrating. Help me here! Advice? Tips? Brand recommendations?

Should I just go into Sephora and tell them my issue? Lol I feel like I need professional help. =(

  • How do I fix a t-shirt that is WAY too big?

I am starting to volunteer at a hospital and we are required to wear their uniform t-shirt. They only carried larges (not even a medium was available). I am a very petite person who wears an XS. I had to buy it no matter what because I'm starting soon and they don't know when the mediums will be in stock. They said the company who manufactures the shirts don't make small sizes at all.

    The t-shirt is:

    - way too long (easily fixed I guess)

    - way too wide

and the shoulders are way too wide! The sleeves seem like they would be an ok length if ONLY the shoulders weren't so wide.

Do I have to go to a tailor to especially fix these issues? I obviously can't make it "look cute" or "fashionable" since it's a uniform. Is it even possible to fix the shoulders?

How much might it cost if I get this done at a tailor? I live in Southern California so it must be more expensive. T___T

  • Best BB cream/Foundation for extremely dry skin? (Including high end brands)?

Before you tell me, I already wash my face with a cleanser, toner, and moisturizer. I have tried putting extra moisturizer and putting on the BB cream right away. It just doesn't work. The BB cream that I tried (Revlon Photoready BB Cream) just clings on to my dry skin flakes and creases and makes my face look a lot more cakey than it actually is.

Is there a BB Cream or a light to medium coverage foundation that you have personally used for dry skin? I would prefer it being at a decent price but I am willing to go to Sephora for a good BB Cream. Online, I see the high end prices being around $40-$50 so I am willing to spend the money for a high end brand.

PS: Would Sephora let me try out the BB cream?

    Thanks!

  • Do people still enjoy handwritten Christmas cards?

I'm on a budget this year so I can't buy people gifts (broke college student) but I can afford a bulk of Christmas cards (a bulk of 20 was $1 at Dollar Tree). I'm afraid people might find them too cheap? I mean I'm going to buy stickers and stuff and decorate them as best as I can so it doesn't look AS cheap so it looks like I actually put in some effort. I'm writing each person a paragraph thanking them for all that they did for me, how they inspire me, and how I really appreciate them as a friend. So it's more about them than about my family and my life.

Do you think my friends will appreciate that or do people not send cards anymore? I feel like I don't tell them I appreciate them very often so this is my way of telling them "hey you're important to me and even though I might not say it, I really do mean it".

I guess the only thing I'm scared of is that they'll think it's really cheap. I can't exactly afford to buy a Christmas card for each person when each decent looking card is like $4. Since I'm making 36 cards, that would have been almost $150 to spend on cards, something I don't have. Is it corny to give someone Christmas cards? I feel like people only tell people Merry Christmas over Facebook or Instagram. Even "e-mail" seems like the old age.

  • Temporary crown problem?

I think the temporary crown is a bit too wide on my upper molar so every time I chew something, I keep accidentally biting my cheeks. I think the fact that my cheek is also a bit swollen because the upper molar is further in the back of the mouth so the dentist kept using his tools to pull my cheeks aside to make room so he could see and work on the tooth. My dentist is out of town until the night before I get the permanent crown in so what I'm wondering is will the permanent one be an issue as well or will it fit better and I won't have to deal with cheek biting?

Could I go see another dentist and have them check it out?

  • Make up tips and recommendations?

So I'm 19 and I'm pretty new at make up since my mom doesn't really wear any. I just started wearing a little mascara, blush, and lip gloss. I decided that I needed a little coverage on my face so I just wanted to know your recommendations on primer, foundation, concealer, and powder. Like what kind do you like to use? Does it make you break out? And what kind of foundation would I use for combination skin (oily t-zone, dry cheeks)? I just want a light to medium coverage. Not too little but not too much coverage either. I have good clear skin that doesn't break out often, so I want to keep it that way. Should I use tinted moisturizer instead? Thanks! :) Oh and try to keep it at like a drugstore brand level. Lol :) Thank you ^^

  • Does getting a crown hurt?

My dentist said I have to get a crown on one of my tooth on the left side. I think I just chipped a tooth, no root canal or anything. I have a few questions.

    1. What is a crown?

    2. Will it hurt?

    3. Will I have to go to a surgeon to do this or will my dentist do it?

    4. If my dentist does it, can I drive back myself or do I have to bring somebody so they can drive me back?

    Thanks.

  • Learning the basics of skateboarding?

I want to learn the basics of skateboarding to get from one place to another, meaning just learning how to go, turn, and stuff like that. It's just something I want to try because it sounds fun. I have heard that longboards and/or cruiser boards are easier if somebody wants to get from point A to point B and no tricks. How easy is it to learn the simple basics? I'm a girl in college who just wants to get across campus faster because I'm tired of walking. =P

Also, bonus question: Longboards vs skateboards vs cruiser boards. Which one do you recommend to get from point A to point B and is the easiest to maneuver?

  • Mandarin translation help?

I have to ask a native Chinese speaker their name (both English and Chinese name), occupation, and nationality for my Chinese final. (Beginner's course so keep it simple, please. ^^)

    Would I say:

    1. 你的中文名字是什么?

    你的英文名字是什么?

Do I use 叫 here or do I stick with 是?

    2. 你的工作是什么?

    3. 你是哪国人? <-- Stupid question, I know, but it's part of the interview portion of the final.

Am I saying it right or do I need to fix something? I don't want to sound stupid in front of a native Chinese speaker. Thanks in advanced!

  • Can an 18 year old licensed driver teach a 20 year old permit driver how to drive?

My friend is 20 and I'm turning 19 next month, but she hasn't had the opportunity to have someone teach her how to drive since both of her parents are busy. She wants me to teach her but my parents are really against it because they said the instructor has to be 25 or older, but my friend read through the handbook and saw that that's only the case if the permit driver is under 18, which she isn't. She also read that if the permit driver is over 18, then a driver with a valid license can teach the person. I've had my license for 2 years already. Can I teach her? Or how do I convince my parents? They seem really keen on the 25+ idea and refuses to let me teach her.

PS: I have strict Asian parents so my dad says if I live under his house, I go by his rules even though I'm an adult and he says I can't teach her. .____________. Old Asian people. I swear.

  • What's wrong with my eye?

For the past few days (approx. 3-4), my right eye has been feeling like it's bruised. Every time I blink, it feels like the lower part is bruised even though nothing wrong is visible. When I checked the inner part of my lower eyelid, it was very red compared to the one on the left.

Now the bruising feeling is slowly going away. I noticed today that every time I blink, I don't feel like it's bruised unless I shut my eyes really tight. So I think it's slowly going away, but I was just wondering.

What was it? Was it an infection? It seems like it's going away but should I go see a doctor?

    Thanks!

  • How hard is Mandarin if you're a Vietnamese native speaker?

I have to take a language in University and I'm thinking about taking Mandarin since it has a lot of similar things about it like Vietnamese would. I heard most English speakers have the most trouble with the tones and grammar but I can hear the tones just fine through Youtube videos. So how is learning Mandarin been for you?

  • Best camcorders/video cameras for recording concerts?

    I'm looking for a camcorder/video camera with:

    1. Decent sound quality

    2. Decent video quality (keep in mind of the dark lighting during the concerts and maybe some flashing lights).

I'm just planning to upload them on Youtube so no editing required except maybe make the video into clips on Windows Movie Maker.

    3. It'll be great if it's pocket sized.

There's no budget since I'm just browsing. I heard the Flip was a good one. Is that true? What do you guys use?

BQ: I've been browsing some other answers and I read that getting one with a mic jack would be better for sound. How does that work? (I'm not a tech person so please explain this to me)

BQ #2: If I do end up bringing a camera/camcorder, is there a mini tripod or something I can bring in/sneak in? I don't want my arms to be hurting the entire 2-3 hours.

And after looking, I've been thinking of getting this one:

    http://www.amazon.com/Flip-SlideHD-Video-Camera-Wh...

or something similar to it. What are your experiences with recording at concerts?

Thanks! Sorry I'm asking so much. I don't know anything about recording and this is my first actual camcorder that I'll own. ^^ Thank you. <3

  • I can't text to a 5 digit number. Am I doing anything wrong?

I'm assuming you just text the number like you would a normal number. No, this isn't a scam, because it's a new poll thing my professor is using during class (instead of using clickers).

But every time I try and text that 5 digit number, it's not sending the message and keeps saying that the message failed to send. I have unlimited texting, unlimited data plan, T-mobile, and a Samsung Galaxy S Blaze. I read somewhere that texting to a 5 digit number requires a premium message plan or something like that. Is that true? If so, why can everyone else in my lecture able to text to that number and I can't? I'm really upset because we had to pay $14 for that poll. :/

  • Organic Chemistry Tips?

So I'm done with the first week of Organic Chemistry I and we're still learning the basics like formal charges and starting to get into different bonds like pi bonds and stuff. Any tips so that I can stay on top of my game in the class? Any websites you recommend? Studying tips? Anything? A LOT of people say O-chem is difficult so I just want to make sure I understand everything.

PS: I really don't like reading ahead in the book in this case because I don't get what I'm reading. I need the professor there to teach me it.

  • Best tampons for beginners?

I have a box of Kotex regulars but I only tried them once and I thought they were a little big (mainly because I was scared it was going to hurt). Is there anything smaller like light or something?

I am going to Raging Waters next week and either I need to use tampons or hope that it's a day or two late. I'm not gonna take my chances so I want to know in advance which one is better?

I heard there is Playtex Pearl Lites and they're great for beginners. Is that true?

    Which one did you guys use at first? Any advice would also be fine. I may be 19 but I have never used tampons and I'm scared it's going to hurt. I know you're supposed to aim towards your back/tailbone area. So anything else? D;

  • Cool ways to cut up a shirt that's way too big?

My university's sizes are way too big for me since I'm smaller than average. The shirt that I got for free at orientation last year was only available in medium and large, so I just got the medium. Now it's sitting in my closet doing nothing. The sleeves almost comes down to my wrist and the shirt reaches to my knees. Anybody have any ideas on how to cut it? I tried to find some on Youtube but most aren't what I am looking for. If you have a link to a good video, please put it here or give me detailed ideas on how to do it since I'm not so great with cutting up clothes. Thanks!

PS: If it helps, I plan to make it a tank top since the sleeves would be ugly cut half way. Also, I also plan to cut off the bottom as well because it's way too long.
