  • Kata, more specifically, the bunkai, would it be relevant in the sport of MMA?

First off, I'm a traditional martial artist with a background in many styles. I do like kata, but I want to see what others think.

A lot of traditionalists have shied away from cage fighting, but more and more of the "big chain" style training centers that used to stay away are now offering MMA and grappling classes.

I really wanted to test myself and see if 20 years of training in tae kwon do, goju, kenpo and kung fu would be useless against a 2 year MMA student/pro mma fighter, so 2 years ago, I did, for an entire summer, then again the following summer.

I found out that I could easily beat all but the most experienced students, most of which had trained well over 2 years. That being said, I learned ALOT, and I urge all traditionalists to try it if you are still young enough to spar and if you willing for "your glass to be half empty".

Can you give an example of where a kata can directly help in the cage? (I know that kata training can indirectly help in a lot of ways)

Is kata still practical, or has MMA changed the landscape enough to disregard kata for fighting?

  • why does firefox work and internet explorer says I'm not connected to the internet?

I am using a netgear wireless hub, and one of our pc's works perfectly fine with mozilla firefox, but when I try using internet explorer it says that I'm not connected. When I use the MS connection wizard, it says it can't help because Netgear is managing the connection, but everything on netgear is working fine.

  • Question about networking hardware?

We are getting ready to move and I found I have tons of coax cable, various RCA adapters, many USB and USB to "Other" conversion cables, as well as phone cords, power cords and other misc wires and cords.

Should I just throw these away? Is there any value to them? They are no longer in use in my home or office but perfectly functional, some have never even been opened.

  • How would you deal with Brock Lesner in a real fight?

I'm not sure how I would handle him. There are not many men that make me think alot of my techniques would be futile against him. Not that I couldn't succeed, but just that I would have a much smaller window of opportunity before being pummeled.

For clarity, I mean an unarmed unavoidable confrontation. Please don't say the eyes or to kick him in the pills.

  • How can you erase permanent marker off of a volleyball?

It's "sharpie" marker on a volleyball that I want to erase. I think the ball is polyurethane, but not sure. Maybe just rubber.

  • Question about Brazilian Jiujitsu for people with striking art backgrounds....?

I have recently began serious traditional (Gi) BJJ training. As many of you know, I have extensive experience in karate, kung fu and tae kwon do, including sweeps from standing and a few throws, but very little grappling experience.

I had about 10 classes of MMA that included some "no gi" jiu jitsu.

So far, I have had 3 classes of the traditional BJJ, and I am finding many of the throws counter intuitive. In otherwords, I feel like I am setting up to throw one direction, but the technique is the other direction.

Anyone else experience this? How did you adapt?

  • Is the myth debunked? (UFC/MMA)?

We've been told for years that you cannot have karate, kung fu or taekwondo as your base art and succeed in cage fighting.

Has Lyoto Machida and Georges St.Pierre, who both have a karate base, debunked this myth?

Obviously, over the last 15 years, we all learned that groundfighting and grappling are important parts of martial arts and that they had been largely ignored, at least in North America.

With the cage largely being believed as the only real "proving ground" for a martial art, many martial arts have been written off as ineffective.

Obviously, Machida is also a black belt in Jiujitsu, and GSP has developed a vicious ground and pound game.

So what do you think, is the myth debunked, or is just Muay Thai and BJJ?

  • Martial Arts Athletes Question.....Gamma-O/Supplemen… For those of you who consider yourselves athletes, as we?

    Martial Arts Athletes Question.....Gamma-O/Supplemen…

For those of you who consider yourselves athletes, as well as martial artists, or MMA practitioners....

Have you ever used the supplement GAMMA-O? If yes, please include your age at the time you used it, how you used it, and what benefits, if any, you experienced?

I have used protein powders and creatine for years, but never really experimented much with others.

I recently began using nitric oxide enhancers, glutamine and leucine/arginine metabolism boosters and was really surprised and pleased with the results.

I have never tried GAMMA-O, but it is endorsed by a number of competitive fighters and I have considered it.

I am not looking for dialog about the use of or safety of supplements. I am very familiar with the FDA and regulatory issues from a professional standpoint.

I am looking for the experience of those that have used them. And the age they were at the time they used them!

  • The usefulness, or lackthereof, of kata...(forms/poomse/hyungs)?

There have been two posts about this recently and I wanted to ask some followup questions.

I pulled up an article from Black Belt magazine that claims 10 keys to combat learned from kata. "Essential Principles of Self Defense You Already Learned From Your Kata". I will list them, and I would like to know if you agree, disagree, why or why not?

1.) Soft Against Hard, Hard Against Soft

2.) High Low High, Low High Low - All Blocks are strikes

3.) All Blocks are strikes -

    4.) Chambering has a purpose

5.) Touch Your Body, Touch Your Opponent

6.) Forward for striking, backward for grappling

    7.) Hidden Distractions between techniques

    8.) Importance of breathing

    9) Use your whole body to strike

10.) Train with intention and visualization

    I particularly agree with # 7, # 8 and # 10. To me # 1 doesn't make sense, it's a circular logic with no conclusion.

    What are your thoughts?

The UFC has announced it is opening a UFC Brand of gyms across the country.

  • Martial Artist's New Years Resolutions?

    January is almost over.

I'm curious as to what kinds of New Resolutions have been made by our martial arts community?

We all have our personal life related goals and resolutions, but I am curious about resolutions specifically related to your martial arts training.

My training resolution for 2009 is to be able to do the full side splits, Van Damme style. I have about 9" to go.
