Are the Republicans implementing the "flat tax" through the back door?
Republicans are pushing income tax "reform" that will eliminate many tax deductions like the mortgage interest deduction, the deduction of state and local taxes, and the deduction for employer paid health insurance (but not the 15% capital gains rate) in exchange for reducing the top marginal rate by 10%. By my calculations, the loss of these deductions is going to put a lot of people who consider themselves middle class earners into the top tax bracket paying the same tax rates as those at the top income levels. Is this a stealth "flat tax"?
3 AnswersPolitics10 years agoIf Ryancare is such a great idea?
Why wait 10 years to implement it? Don't all those seniors in the Tea Party want to help cut government spending? Why not privatize Medicare now?

Did the right wing campaign against Muslims encourage the actions of the "Kill Team" of young American soldiers in Afghanistan?
1 AnswerPolitics1 decade agoWhat is the Republican Party doing to improve the middle class standard of living?
So far, all I see are pay and benefit cuts. I don't think that a $35 a week tax cut is going to cover lower wages, higher health care costs, and saving for that no Social Security or Medicare retirement.
5 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoHow will ending 30 year fixed rate mortgages affect real estate values?
With the plan to kill Fannie and Freddie, and having all mortgage financing done by banks, I am reading that 30 year fixed rate mortgages will not be available. Mortgages will be much more expensive, presumably with variable rates. With fewer people able to afford home purchases, will house values take a further hit?
2 AnswersRenting & Real Estate1 decade agoIs the real opposition to health care reform?
Any expansion of Medicaid? Once it is in place, it will be impossible to retract, endangering the tax cut program of the GOP.
For all the Constitutional issues raised over the "mandate", I don't see much real concern for those who will be forced to purchase individual health insurance. The GOP has never challenged the huge increases in health care costs over the past 20 years, and the wealthy and those with decent jobs will continue to receive their employer provided coverage.

Then is the law requiring hospital emergency rooms to treat uninsured patients (thus forcing a private entity to provide a commercial service) also un-Constitutional?
12 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoWill Mitch McConnell support spending cuts that affect Kentucky?
Like closing Fort Knox? Or will he kick and scream like Virginia did when it was proposed to close Joint Forces Command base in Norfolk, VA, resulting in thousands of Virginians being laid off?
2 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoHas the Tea Party given up on fiscal responsiblity?
Now that we are back to Bush style tax cut and spend deficit spending? Does it mean that the pro-corporate wing of the GOP is back, and the Tea Party is irrelevant?
14 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoAre the real death panels?
Part of Arizona Governor Jan Brewer's state Medicaid reforms? Now that Arizona has decided to cut spending by denying state residents Medicaid funded transplants, 100 people will die from lack of medical care in a country with the "greatest" health care system in the world.
8 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoSince we keep blaming the Democratic Congress for everything since 2006?
Will the Republicans now accept responsibility for not fixing the unemployment problem now that they have the House and enough Senators to block any bill in the Senate?
3 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoIs the Ground Zero Mosque fight really between two Muslim sects?
Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. is partly owned by the Saudi Arabian royal family, the sponsors of the fundamentalist Wahabi sect of Islam. The "Ground Zero" mosque is being built by a member of the Sufi sect of Islam, who are viewed as heretics by the Wahabis. Are the NY Post, Wall Street Journal, and Fox News fighting the mosque at the behest of Wahabi News Corp shareholders?

4 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoDo we need to spend 4 billion dollars on an airbase?
We are currently planning to construct a new Marine Corp airbase on Okinawa, Japan, costing 4 billion dollars. Given the fact that WW2 ended 65 years ago, do we still need to have 40,000 American military personnel stationed in Japan?

Should the Federal government let Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida handle their own oil damage without Federal interference? It would be a good demonstration of the effectiveness of these state authorities and governors, and it would help lower the Federal deficit, because you know that BP, Transocean, and Halliburton are not going to pick up the entire tab for this mess.
3 AnswersPolitics1 decade agoAre tax exemptions for religious groups a violation of the First Amendment?
By giving churches a tax exemption, isn't government passing a law that aids religion? Should we be giving tax exemptions for mansions, luxury cars, and private aircraft? What about holdings of land not used for religious purposes?
