I am an informed lay-person in the Evangelical Church. I have a strong interest in the early church fathers, and in the unity of the Christian Church. By trade, I am a software engineer. ---------- Why do we need Jesus? God is all loving, yes. But God is also righteous and holy. That is why Jesus came: "The wisdom of God devised a way for the love of God to deliver sinners from the wrath of God while not compromising the righteousness of God." - John Piper It is my hope that both self-righteous religious sinners, and non-religious sinners will turn to God, not only because he is worthy of it, but because in Him alone do we find our ultimate purpose and ultimate joy that far surpasses all momentary earthly pleasures.
What would it take for the Christian Church to be united again?
Roman Catholics, Protestants, and Eastern Orthodox are all united under the Nicene Creed. (With the minor difference of who the Holy Spirit Proceeds from (Just the Father, or both the Father and the Son?) in the updated creed at Chalcedon, I believe) I think there would have to be some give and take on all sides. Assuming that coming under the authority of the Pope is likely out of the question for most non-Roman-Calthoics, how could the church be united again? Give your opinion, I'm interested to hear. (Oh and I'm Evangelical, but Ecumenically-minded)

1. What religion do you consider yourself to be?
2. How did you join this religion? (Born into a family that believed it, etc?)
3. What benefits does this religion do for you? (peace, joy, meaning, etc?)
Thanks!
2 AnswersReligion & Spirituality9 years agoAtheists: How do you deal with infinite regress?
If there is no first cause (ie. God) how do you deal with the beginning of a finite universe? Saying there are an infinite number of multiple universes just pushes the question back.
18 AnswersReligion & Spirituality9 years agoAtheists: How do you deal with the emptiness?
I'm not asking whether not not God exists. What I'm asking is that now that you have decided that God does in fact not exist, how do you deal with the feelings of emptiness and meaninglessness?
28 AnswersReligion & Spirituality9 years agoWhy are you a christian?
So here's a question for you Christians out there. Why are you a Christian? What event in your life brought you to make that decision, and what do you see as your own reasoning behind it?
Secondly, Why do you stay a Christian? Do you have stories of straying and returning. Once again please include the circumstances and your reasoning for returning.
If you used to be a Christian, but gave it up, please cite reasons.
Thanks!

Or are they basically the same. I've been taking fish oil for cholesterol and triglycerides. Are they basically the same, or is one better than the other? What about the milled flax seed vs the flax seed oil? Thanks.
2 AnswersDiet & Fitness10 years agoTurtles all the way down sounds more like a proof for God rather than a disproof?
Infinite regress is what you get when you try to explain the existence of the universe by natural causes. The only explanation is to have an uncaused cause that is not part of the natural order that started everything. Otherwise you're just dealing with infinite regress.
Thoughts?

2 AnswersHigher Education (University +)10 years agoAtheists: Is it really reasonable to reject the possibility that an infinite being created the universe?
The idea that nothing suddenly became something for no reason, and then had laws and order that governed it so that it evolved life all on it's own to be able to understand it seems pretty far fetched to me. A bit like magic under the guise of scientific conjecture. For any of this to happen something greater must have put it in motion.
33 AnswersReligion & Spirituality10 years agoHow many christians see the bible as a scientific document?
Just curious. I don't believe that the bible was about describing the natural order, but to present the characters of God to us.
What do you guys think?

3 AnswersLaptops & Notebooks10 years agoWhy would anyone think science disproves the existence of God?
Science tries to explain how the world works, and has no information about what caused it to begin. People will say the big bang happened. But what caused the big bang? Saying that because we have science there must be no God is like saying, because I am a mechanic and can fix my car and understand how it works, there must not be any engineer who designed it. The existence of God is a philosophical problem, not a scientific one. The bible on the other hand does not attempt to be a scientific document. It's a story to tell us about who God is and who we are etc.
11 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoKing james only people... what do you think about this verse?
In this translation, 1 John 5:7 mentions the trinity explicitly. We know from church history that the first mention of the doctrine of the trinity did not appear until Tertullian (born in 160, after all books of the bible had been written). Research has shown that this verse was added in the 14th century. I'm genuinely curious what your answer is to this, which is why I'm asking.
So in light of this verse, is the KJV reliable?
7 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoAnybody planning on being celibate their whole lives?
So I know priests do this in the Roman church, and there have been protestants too, like John Stott. But just curious if anyone on here thinks that's how they'd like to live their lives, and why?
