  • Why did I randomly fall sideways?

The other morning I woke up and when I got out of bed and stood up, I completely lost control over my balance and fell sideways onto the bedside table. I've never had something like this happen before, and I'm young. I don't think I'm seriously diseased or anything - I was just wondering why.

  • 19 year old woman dating 25 year old man?

I recently turned nineteen (freshman in college) and I'm interested in a man who is about to turn twenty-five. Is nearly six years too much of an age difference? For reference, I'm not the flighty type - I would be ready to settle down and marry in a year or two, if it worked out. (I would still finish college, though - scholarships are paying for it and I live off campus already anyway). Would it be worth it for us to consider dating?

  • Cost of new rotors and brake pads?

I'm in the process of purchasing a 2009 Kia Spectra (getting the title tomorrow). I took the car to a mechanic (not my favorite one, but I have a tight schedule), and he said that the car would need new rotors and brake pads on the front. What is a fair price (prices both for doing it yourself and having it done at a mechanic)? I don't want to get ripped off when I go to replace these!

  • What are health careers other than nursing or MD?

I love life sciences and health sciences especially intrigue me. However, I hate to get my hands too dirty. For example, I love watching things being dissected, but I hate to dissect. Plus, I'm more of an introvert than an extrovert (not that I don't have people skills - most everyone I know thinks I'm outgoing), so taking care of people I don't know very well all day long would tax me. Anyway, I'm asking, what are some good careers with possibility for decent advancement in the health care fields? If its analytical that's great, too! I like to analyze things. I don't mind tedious things. But I do like to see progress - stagnant work annoys me.

    Suggestions?

P.S. In case you didn't already get the drift, I'm trying to decide what to major in when I go to college in a year.

  • Can't breathe when running in the summer!?

    Why is this?

I started running this spring to lose weight when it was around 50 degrees, and I was doing great! I lost 15 lbs and was confident I could lose more over the summer. But as soon as heat and humidity rolled around, I have had such trouble breathing when I run! After a quarter mile of running or jogging I start to see stars because I can't get enough oxygen! Its making me scared to run. How can I fix this without running in an air conditioned gym?

  • How can I prepare for AP Biology?

I took honors biology at my highschool freshman year and did quite well, and now I'm planning on taking AP Bio senior year. But since they are so far apart, I am very sure that I have forgotten most everything!

How should I review / what topics should I review in order to prepare for taking AP Bio this summer?

I'm planning on making several trips to the library. :) Thanks!

  • What genre are the songs from Cinderella?

I was wondering, since it's the genre for which my voice is best suited. Other things that work for me are the songs from Snow White or "Waitin' for My Dearie" from the musical Brigadoon.

  • My gerbils are so squirmy...?

I have 2 male gerbils that I will be taking to 4H this year (I know, kinda lame, but I needed another project). I want to make them more sociable, since that is something they are judged on. I can usually pick them up with out difficulty but they don't sit still at all in my hands and I eventually give up and put them back because they are so hyper. Suggestions?

  • Brushing off threats from N. Korea?

Why does the U.S. keep, well, what seems like it to me, brushing off threats from N. Korea? Shouldn't they be taking it more seriously since there are so many? I suppose there's things going on behind closed doors that we don't know about, so are they just trying not to scare the public or something? Honestly, I'm confused about the attitude of not just the U.S. but the whole world towards these threats.

  • Academic dorms vs. non-academic?

I'm considering colleges right now, and some require on-campus housing freshman year. My mother is very worried about what goes on in college dorms (horror stories from the Internet and her sister, who has 4 kids already through college). I don't want her to disallow my entrance into such colleges just for that reason. I'm very studious, and I was wondering if academic dorms or honors communities are any better. Obviously they won't be free of drugs and sleeping around, but I was wondering if they are any better. Thanks for any input!

  • Can I live on this salary?

As someone who is looking at careers before I enter college in about a year and a half, I've been wondering about what sort of salary a single person can live on reasonably. Now, I could go into almost anything I wanted to and make tons of money (I'm lined up to be valodictorian of a large school) I want to do something that interests me. And I don't really want to go to school for a lot of years. I'd prefer a bachelor's degree, and would be willing to get a master's if it was necessary for the field I wanted to go into.

I love animals and lately have been looking at being a veterinary technologist (which is a bachelor's, not an associate degree). However, the mean salary is only about $30,000. Is this a reasonable salary for a single person - would I be able to save up for cars, maybe eventually a small house, etc, as well as cover essential costs of living? If not, are there other options I should look at for getting into veterinary medicine without going to school for many years to become a doctor? Any suggestions and thoughts are appreciated!

  • Should I donate blood again?

So I donated--well, tried to donate--blood a few months ago at my school. I hadn't been old enough before so it was my first time. I'm not scared of needles in the least and have had blood samples taken (I know - big difference) so I wasn't worried about it. I guess they gave me the incompetent person because of that. Everyone else there looked petrified to give blood.

Anyway, I got a total idiot (no offense to him or anything - he seemed nice) who couldn't find veins and had to keep asking other nurses to come and see if he had found a vein. They all looked annoyed and had no problem finding it. The guy stuck me in my right arm, wiggled the needle around some, and declared that he had lost the vein. Bruise #1. Then he decides to try my right arm - same difficulty finding a vein. Sticks me in that arm, actually gets the vein but has left the blood pressure cuff on. Instead of tying the rubber thing around my arm like everyone else he left on the cuff -really tight too, and made my hand go purple and numb. Then he wondered why no blood was coming out and pulled the needle before I could say that it was because no blood was getting through my arm. Bruise #2. Bruise #2 was a large hematoma, I might add. Soo...I didn't get to give blood but got stuck in both arms, and I just wanted to go home and cry because I was sick of sitting on a chair having someone squeeze my arms to death and wiggling needles around in them.

My question is, should I give blood? There's another blood drive coming up soon. Is it worth it? Or am I going to get stuck with the incompetent new guy again and not be able to give blood? I'm actually kind of nervous now, because what happened last time was so terrible. My mom (an RN) even said the guy was an idiot and reported him to the blood center. I know it saves lives and everything, which is why I still want to do it. Should I?

  • Should I rent or buy a violin?

I've been thinking about learning the violin, just for myself since it's my dream instrument. I would take lessons from a friend. I don't have tons of money to spend. Should I rent a nicer instrument, rent-to-own, or buy an instrument worth around $200? I'm open to any suggestions.

P.S. I don't know if you need to know this, but I already have experience in music - I play the piano and sing classically. I would be looking to play the violin both classically and as a fiddle.

  • I've lost weight - and still feel fat...?

I'm in the process of losing weight - I need to lose 30 to 40 pounds. I've already lost about ten, but I still feel just as fat and ugly as before. How can I improve my body-image?

p.s. I am being healthy in my weight loss - no anorexia or binging/purging. I just can't seem to feel any prettier. :(

  • Is 2040 an good SAT score?

This was my first time taking it (I'm taking it again in a few months) and I decided not to study at all. Is this good? I got a 710 in Critical Reading, a 660 in Math, and a 670 in Writing. On my essay, I got a 9 (on a scale of 2-12) - is this good? I'm usually good at writing, although not so much on standardized tests. Any tips for writing in a small amount of time space (I used every second on my essay, with no planning this time)? Thanks!

I already posted this in Standards and Testing, but I'm hoping for lots of opinions so I'll post it in Higher Education too. For reference, I'm not trying to get into an Ivy League or anything, just a state college, but I am hoping for scholarships.
