I'm a 34 year old mom. I spend most of my time in the pets section, but I like the gardening section as well. We have a small farm in rural Ohio, and my two sons and I raise miniature sheep, pygmy and Nubian goats, fancy poultry, ducks and rabbits. We also share our home with our rescues - 3 cats and 3 dogs. Aside from animal care and husbandry, I have many years experience with landscaping and natural gardening. We spend our summers selling the fresh herbs and produce we raise at our farm at local farmer's markets. I am very active with local growers organizations and do alot of volunteer work educating people about where their food comes from. I teach locally, and am about a year away from my RN certification. I am also writing a book on alternative herbal landscaping, and working on receiving an agricultural research grant. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and interests. I'm always happy to respond to emails with specific questions and try to help anyone out.
Removal of cat urine on hunting clothing?
My boyfriend was getting ready to go deer hunting and laid out his (very expensive) hunting jacket and vest. His mistake was laying it on the couch that one of my cats has claimed as "theirs". They rewarded him by peeing on his vest and $300 hunting jacket (which really shocked me, as they have NEVER done this). Now my boyfriend's mad at me (and the cat), and I need to find the best way to remove the odor. I am soaking it in cold water and baking soda right now, and I have a special laundry detergent for hunters that is designed to remove the scents of laundry detergent and such (but I don't know if it's designed to remove cat pee). I don't want to damage the jacket, but I need some good ideas for removing the odor.
3 AnswersCats1 decade agofriend won't get her stuff out?
just wondering how you would handle this... I had a longtime friend go through a divorce. I offered her a place to stay (a cute little apartment on our property) until she got back on her feet and decided where she wanted to go. She moved some stuff in, but never even really stayed there. Basically, I became a (free) storage unit, while she moved in with a new boyfriend.
I told her months ago that if she wasn't going to use it, I could really use the rental income and she needed to get her stuff out of there so I could fix it up and advertise it for rent. It seems like another month goes by, and very little progress gets made. I was planning on having it rented by September 1.
I am on the verge of getting a storage unit, putting the rest of her stuff in it, and giving her the key - and the bill. She knows I need the place emptied and I need to rent it ASAP. I feel like I tried to do something to help her out, but now I'm just being taken advantage of.
I don't want to lose a friend, but I'm getting pretty fed up with this. How would you handle it?
13 AnswersFriends1 decade agosystem security question - part 2?
Thanks to the great answers I received on Y!A, I was able to get rid of the system security malware. Thank you to all who answered so promptly and thoroughly!
Now that my computer is back to normal, I am trying to find out if there is anywhere that I can register a complaint against this "company". Are there any numbers I can call or action that I can take to return the misery to the idiots who created this malware? Their so-called customer support only has an email address with "general enquiry [sic]" in the message button.
I seek retribution... any way to deliver it? :)
1 AnswerSecurity1 decade agoSystem Security malware removal?
I've checked through some old answers and have tried everything to no avail to get rid of System Security version 4.52.
I tried to access my control panel with add/remove programs, selected the system security icon and tried to remove it, and it indicated that the program was already removed. Yet when I restarted, the pop ups were still there (as well as the icon on the toolbar). I could only access the control panel in safe mode, but I can't seem to run the antivirus programs in safe mode.
I've downloaded free copies of several versions of anti-malware software, but SS will disable them. I am on the verge of throwing my computer out the window. I am not tech-saavy enough to deal with this!
I called the customer support # for spyware doctor and was told that their program would remove the virus (not the free dowloadable copy which the damn program keeps disabling before it would run).
When I called the store that carries spyware doctor (which I will not name because their sales associate really pissed me off- but it rhymes with "rest guy"), I was told they can't guarantee the program WILL work, and there are no refunds - but their geek squad can fix it for $200. Seriously?
So, does anyone know how to disable this stupid thing? As I've said, I've followed several links, tried several downloads - to no avail. If I can't disable it myself, does anyone know of an antivirus program that can (and will) remove it? I can't afford to waste money on software if it doesn't work, and I certainly can't afford to pay someone $200 to fix it.
So - any advice on how to disable and remove System Security 4.52?
Can anyone recommend an antivirus program that will?
Please respond ASAP - it won't even let me open Microsoft Word, and I need to access files for class!!!! Thanks in advance!
6 AnswersSecurity1 decade agosublimation experiment... interpreting results?
This is probably a pretty basic question, but I am really confused on how to interpret the results of a sublimation experiment.
I tested samples of solid CaCO3, solid NH4Cl, and a mixture of the two by 1) heating the mixture and collected sublimed solids on a watch glass, and 2) by adding HCI to unheated samples of those two separate solids and a mixture of both and observing the reactions. 3) I then tested the collected solid from the first heated sample by adding HCI to it and observed the reaction as well.
Okay, no problem, I followed the directions, and observed the reactions. but I have NO CLUE how to interpret the data to identify what the collected solid is.
I'm not looking for the answer, because if I can't figure it out then I'm not learning anything in the process. But what do I need to compare? I'm looking at how the solid samples reacted with HCI, how the mixture reacted with HCI, and how the recovered solid reacted. I know one of the substances sublimed (went from solid to gas) when heated, but how do I go about figuring this out?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I've got my first lab practical today and I need to understand this!
2 AnswersChemistry1 decade agoreligious differences?
I';ve been in a relationship with my bf for over a year and we get along great - except for some differences in religious beliefs. He was raised in a Christian family, and aside from us, nearly everyone else attends church every Sunday. I was not raised in a particular religion, and although I consider myself a spiritual person, I prefer to keep my own beliefs a private matter.
My bf and I have had involved discussions on this, and what it comes down to is he respects my beliefs and I respect his, and neither of us is trying to convert the other.
Especially around religious holidays, many people in his family invite us to church, and I always politely decline. I don't want to be a hypocrite and attend a service simply because it's expected of me. My bf used to attend this church with his wife, and since they split, he's fallen away from it, although he still maintains his beliefs.
It's becoming increasingly awkward and I feel like his family is looking at me like I'm the godless heathen who is causing him to stray. I think he would like us to attend church every once in awhile, but I think that would make me a complete hypocrite. How do I handle this?
4 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoSwitching careers? Another degree?
I completed my undergrad in 2000 and I'm at a crossroads right now. My bf is encouraging me to go back to school and complete my teaching certification (I have 2 BAs and can receive certification and licensing in about 6 months). I've spent the last year substituting and trying to find my particular teaching niche, which seems to be high school English.
Here's the problem - I really enjoy teaching, but there are no permanent openings in my area (relocation is not an option), and future openings are looking grim. There are, however, many job openings advertised for LPNs and nursing. I'm thinking of going back for medical assisting, finding permanent employment in the medical field, then continuing my education for either LPN or RN.
Anyone familiar with how elective credits would transfer? Recommended programs (online even)?
I'd be happy in either field, but the bottom line is job security and being able to pay the mortgage. Anyone out there dealt with this? Do I continue on my current teaching path and just hope for an opening? Doesn't it make more sense to pursue a career where I know there are more jobs available?
Where do I go from here?
2 AnswersHealth Care1 decade agoDNA test for child support?
My son (who is almost 14) has never seen a dime of support from his biological father. I finally decided to let the court find him and they did (he's in another state). We're starting the process of establishing paternity (he signed the birth certificate but has had no contact since my son was a newborn).
My son and I are scheduled to go for a DNA test and his father is scheduled for one in his own state. The question I have is how is the other state going to guarantee that his father is the actual person that shows up to take the test? He hid his income and his address for years and hasn't wanted to take any responsibility to date, and I wouldn't put it past him to try to have someone else go for the test in his place.
Has anyone gone through a forced paternity test? Do they make them provide photo ID and such? I can't imagine him willingly submitting to this. For anyone who has been through this, do you know what the procedure is? I just want to guarantee my son gets the support he deserves, even if his father doesn't want to be involved in his life.
5 AnswersLaw & Ethics1 decade agoSmall claims court or prosecutor?
Long story short, I filed a complaint with the BBB of Chicago about a "loss mitigation" company that defrauded me out of $1500. The complaint went unanswered and the BBB recommended I should contact Cook Co. small claims.
The question I have is a two-part one. First, I live in another state and travelling to IL to pursue this is going to be difficult at best. Can I file this claim in my own county's small claims court, seeing that I was a resident here when I contracted with the Chicago company? And secondly, should I first pursue this through either the IL or OH (my home state) attorney general's office instead? I believe what this company did was knowingly and willfully criminal in defrauding me.
I need some info on the next step in this process and any help would be greatly appreciated!
3 AnswersLaw & Ethics1 decade agoExperience with tattoos covering scars/stretch marks?
I got my first tattoo last year on my left foot and love it. I am ready to get more and have been researching info on tatts to cover scars/stretch marks.
I ended up with a few stretch marks after having kids (being a size 3 and having a 9 lb. baby can do that to someone). I've been too self-concious to wear a bikini since having my youngest (who is now almost 8). I'm in good physical shape and don't have any sagging skin or other post-baby issues except I've got a couple of very wide (1/8"), very obvious stretch marks on my right abdomen and right hip bone area. I'd rather get a new tatt that I'm happy to show off instead of hiding my stomach all the time!
Has anyone out there covered stretch marks with tattoos and are happy with the results? Any pointers on tattooing over the scar or rather around it to minimize?
Any links or pics would really help. Thanks in advance for any advice!
3 AnswersTattoos1 decade agoKids expecting too much for Christmas?
My bf and I each have 2 kids and money is really tight this year for gifts. I've always kept it pretty simple for my kids gift-wise. The problem is my bf's oldest. She decided that she wants a $350 cell phone a few months ago and harped on him about it ever since. We explained to her it's not an option (we've got 3 other kids to buy for and he's been out of work for 4 months). We did get her a less expensive phone which will be added to an existing plan. Her mother apparently told her about the phone (that's a whole other story) and his daughter got pretty upset and asked her dad why he didn't even try to get her the one she wanted.
She's acting completely ungrateful about this, which is making both of us pretty upset. I told him I think we should give her the phone and let the rest of the family know that if it's that important to her, she can save her gift receipts and return all of her other presents to trade in for the expensive phone. I also told him that I think we should take all the kids to volunteer at a local soup kitchen or homeless shelter so that they can see that we're lucky to still have what's important - family, a place to live, food on the table... My bf says he doesn't want to give her ANY phone at this point.
I know that his kids are used to having more than what they'll be getting this year, but our other 3 kids accept this and will be happy regardless. How would you handle this? She's a great kid, but it really hurts me to see how ungrateful she's acting and how much it hurts her dad.
17 AnswersGrade-Schooler1 decade agoWindows XP blue screen of death?
I'm practically computer illiterate so please show some patience with this question. My laptop has Windows XP and has thrown me the dreaded "blue screen of death", as a friend called it. The laptop was second hand and I don't have the original registered XP disk to restore or repair it.
What would happen if I used a registered copy of Windows Vista or other Windows app and loaded that instead? I'm not worried about losing documents as anything important is already saved on disk. I just want to make sure my existing programs will continue to work, and I don't want to do something that's going to lead to greater problems. Do I need to use XP to get my computer functioning again?
Options, suggestions, instructions, anything would really be appreciated. Please be kind - I'm at the mercy of technology that I just don't understand!
6 AnswersSoftware1 decade agoUsing antique slate for flooring?
I want to redo my kitchen floor (ugly 1970 looking linoleum) in a 120-year old farm house. I want to do something unique that fits with a primitive look (knotty pine walls, original doors and woodwork). I have a pallet of old slate roof shingles that were salvaged from the barn when it was torn down. Most are still in very good shape and I was wondering if there was any way to incorporate this material into the flooring. Can this be used to tile the floor?
I'm looking for anyone with info on using slate for flooring - pros, cons and so on. I'd also like info on recommended thickness, type of adhesive, grout, etc.? I've done ceramic tile and refinished hardwood floors, so I have some basic flooring experience.
Thanks in advance for any information!
2 AnswersDecorating & Remodeling1 decade agoAllergic reaction to a wasp/hornet sting??
I was stung earlier tonight and for the first time in my life (I'm in my 30s) had an allergic reaction. Within 10 minutes, I felt faint, nauseous, almost passed out. I had a family member drive me to the nearest fire station to be checked out by the EMS. They said it was an allergic reaction, albeit not life threatening. I'm still feeling kinda out of it 5 hours later. I was told to take Benadryl and rest, and call if symptoms got worse.
I'm not sure what stung me - it was some type of wasp or hornet (I know it wasn't a bee, as it tried to sting repeatedly and there was no stinger left in the injury). My question is, if you have an allergic reaction to one type of stinging insect, will you have that same reaction to other types? The paramedics told me to be careful, as reactions tend to get worse with repeated stings.
The big problem is I run a farm and spend 90% of my time in a garden working around stinging insects, and worse yet, I keep bees!!! Do I now have to worry about having the same (or worse) reaction to a bee sting? Should I consider selling the beehives?
4 AnswersAllergies1 decade agoName suggestions for new pygmy goat kids??
Our little doe SIlver had twins this morning (never fun being in the barn at 2 a.m.) She has a buck and a doe. The buck looks like a dark grey agouti with a full belly band, white star and ears, and the doe is a light grey agouti with white ears and star.
I am completely tapped out for names and not feeling creative and I'm looking for suggestions.
NPGA registered names are up to 35 characters. I also have to use my registered herd name to prefix the kid's name. Both of their names will start with "Sfield Hill's", so 13 letters are already taken.
Sometimes I like to use the mother or father's name incorporated into the kids' names, but the problem is, I HATE both of their registered names - K's Heavenly Hill Beam Me Up Scotty (aka Scotty), and Spring Willow Silver Beam (aka Silver). I don't want any more Star Trek references, but astronomy references might work for the buck.
10 points for the most creative and thoughtful suggestion! Thanks!!
3 AnswersOther - Pets1 decade agoAnyone familiar with an old style Reo reel lawnmower?
I've got this old Reo lawnmower that's been sitting in my garage for years (came with the house). It looks like one of those old reel lawnmowers, but it actually is motorized. I've tried finding info for it on line, with no luck. I saw a couple similar to it on display at a county fair last week with the farm antiques, and I'd like to find out it's age.
Any help would really be appreciated!
3 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs1 decade agoVery shy cat suddenly decides to make a new friend???
Just wondering if anyone has ever encountered this... one of my rescues (almost 12 years old) has always been so shy with everyone but me (earning her the name "Boo").. She was feral for nearly a year before I won her trust and brought her inside, and she's always been very trusting and affectionate with me - but never anyone else, not even my kids who have grown up with her.
She has suddenly decided that my boyfriend of 8 months is her new best friend - she's on him constantly! I think it's great and it really surprised me, but why him and now? She never took to my ex (and we were together for nearly 8 years!) What gives? He's not even a cat person!
7 AnswersCats1 decade agoWhat would you do if your dog(s) did this?
My dogs got ahold of my 4-week old goat kid and mauled her to death last night. They killed a tiny doe that I've been bottlefeeding and caring for around the clock. She was so little that she was still living in a plastic tote in the house. The dogs got into the main part of the house and must have been "playing" with her and carrying her around by the neck.
I came home from my birthday dinner (!!!!) to find her dead in the living room. It was horrible.
I've never allowed my dogs to chase or be aggressive towards any animal, and the fact that they did this has put me in the difficult position to consider euthanasia. Please don't tell me this was pack instinct, because I raise goats and I can't have a livestock killing dog around, much less two.
I'm still in tears over this and I don't know what to do. These are pets but I'm so upset right now that I don't want them around my home or my family. I have to explain what happened to my kids and make a decision.
16 AnswersDogs1 decade agoHow do you deal with the ex's when dating?
I've been single for about 18 months, ending a long-term relationship. I've recently struck up a friendship with someone. We have alot in common, and went out to dinner this week for the first time. He's going through a divorce (after 18 years and she cheated). It's scary enough re-entering the dating world, but how do you handle an ex who's trying to cause problems already? We both have kids, so dealing with ex's is inevitable. I hardly speak to mine, but his is, well, a little psycho for lack of a better term. I'm trying to be discreet, but it's a small town. He'll call his kids to say goodnight, and she'll grab the phone and start screaming at him if she thinks he's with me. We were on the phone a minute ago, and she barged into his house with their kids screaming "get off the phone with your little girlfriend now!" I like him, but I don't know if I'm ready for all the drama. I feel bad that his kids are seeing this. Any suggestions?
