  • Keeping family visits fair?

We currently split our vacation between each side of the family. 4 or 5 days in each place. However, my husband's family has started driving up and visiting for a day or two (staying in a hotel) when we are visiting MY side of the family. My side is pretty worked up over this. They don't think it's fair and complain that they are encroaching on the only time they get to spend with us. Quite honestly I agree with them, but my husband thinks everybody should just share the time and it's no big deal. I cannot get him to see my point of view on this (although we usually agree on other things) and it's causing a lot of strife. Do you think my family is just being selfish or have my in-laws really stepped over the line?

  • A gluten free kitchen question?

I know I need to get rid of non-stick cook ware, wooden utensils, plastic items, wooden cutting boards and the colander... I'm wondering if I need to stop using my pottery as well? Specifically I have an older McCoy mixing bowl that belonged to my mother, it's part of the oven ware set. I'm definitely not going to throw it away in any case-- but is it safe to put gluten free food in? Would there be a problem with cross contamination?

  • Identifying a piece of furniture?

We've just purchased an antique kitchen hutch/cabinet. I was wondering if anyone could tell me more about it. The decade it was manufactured, a suggestion about where to look at more of them and anything else you may know about the piece. It looks like a hoosier but with no step-back or enamel counter top. I have two pictures posted here:

    http://gallery.me.com/katymonthei#100300

We're considering repainting it while saving the detail on the bottom doors but I want to do some research before I decide to go ahead with it.

    Thanks!

  • Running water on stage?

Anyone have any ideas on how we could run water from a kitchen sink faucet on stage? There is no nearby water source to hook up to. Would a siphon and bucket set up work? Maybe somehow using a small pump for meant for water fountains?

Help! I got roped into this and I'm so not a t.d.!

  • Rigging an electric range for stage?

First of all, let me preface this by saying I know nothing whatsoever about wiring or electricity beyond the very basics...

I'm designing a set for theatre that involves having a working electric range on stage. By working, I only mean that one burner will heat for cooking. The theatre has only ok'd the use of a hot plate, not the range itself. So the question is: Can a burner and drip catch on the range be removed and the hotplate set in place under the cooktop so that it appears to be a burner? Is there enough space? A hot plate base unit is usually about 3" in height and around 22" in length. Will the hot plate being used under the range cause any problems with the wiring on the stove (we may be borrowing a working stove and can't make any changes to it).

Anything that I'm missing/not aware of to consider? Suggestions?

    Thanks

  • Teething question, more teeth on bottom before top teeth come in?

Did anybody's baby get 4 teeth on the bottom before any top ones came in? My 6.5 week old has two teeth on the bottom and after a few sleepless nights and some very fussy behavior I noticed that the gums on the bottom the the left and right of the two center teeth look a little red and swollen. All the books say that they get them on the top first but I don't see anything going on there.

Also, best remedies for those sore little gums?

    Thanks

  • 4 month old and naps?

Does anyone else's baby take a LOT of naps during the day? I keep reading that my little guy should be staying awake for about 2 hours now but the longest he's ever stayed awake without getting super crabby is 1.5 hours. Usually it's more like 1 hour before he's ready for a nap. Yawning, crabby, rubbing his eyes, all the tired cues. He's happy and ready to play when he wakes up anywhere from 30min to 2 hrs later. No real pattern to his naps yet, except that he tends to take a longish nap in the morning and mid afternoon. He always wants to go to sleep for the night at 7 no matter what. Just wondering if there are other babies out there like this and how their caregivers manage to get out of the house?!

    Thanks

  • Trouble with motion sleeping?

    Hi,

My little one is addicted to his swing. He needed to sleep upright when smaller to be comfortable and now that he's past that stage he doesn't want to give it up! We've managed to get him to sleep in the crib at night no problem. But for some reason he won't take a nap there. He will only nap in his swing or in a co sleep situation. Honestly, I wouldn't mind (sleep is sleep :) ) but he's a big baby and will outgrow the swing soon!

Has anyone else had this problem? How did you solve it? The only suggestion I'm not open to is cry it out. I'm sure it works for lots of parents but it's not something I'm interested in trying at this point.

    Thanks!

  • Leaks and cloth diapers?

I made some cloth diapers and we are having trouble with leaks. Wetness seeps through the cover around the legs, the rest of the diaper is fine and nothing else is escaping so I think that the fit is good.

The diapers consist of a jersey knit inner, a PUL middle layer, and an outer made of flannel. The soaker in the pocket is made of 3 layers of zorb in a terry cloth cover. I used cotton thread.

Any experienced diaper sewers out there have an idea of what might be happening? Is the thread really wicking that much liquid? Should the outer-most layer just be PUL and ditch the decorative flannel? If I dry them on high heat to close up the sewed holes in the PUL, will that help?

If it is the thread, do I have to toss the dipes or is there something else I can do to save them? A waterproof spray for the outer layer perhaps?

    Thanks

  • How to set overlock stitch on this machine?

I don't have the manual and I can't figure out how to set the overlock stitch on this machine. It's a Viking Juliet.

Any leads on a manual would be great too... :)

  • Hooking up a portable washer to a bathtub spout?

I would like to use my portable washer in the bathroom. Under the old bathtub spout there is a threaded piece sticking out that is capped. Maybe for a hand held shower attachment at some point? I don't know anything about plumbing. :) Is it possible to hook up the quick connect adapter for the washer to this instead of the kitchen sink?

  • Advice about scars from surgery during pregnancy...?

I had to have my appendix removed during my pregnancy. Due to my fast growing belly the scars got pretty ugly. Does anyone have advice on a product I could use to help fade these? I'm already using vitamin E rich lotions and shea butter on them.

    Thanks!

  • For parents, most useful things to have when bringing baby home?

We're having our first somewhere around June 26. I think that we're pretty much set on clothing and baby gear but I keep getting suggestions from other parents that I've missed. Ex: Baby Tylenol.

I'd love to get some more suggestions from other parents to make sure I have my bases covered.

    About us:

We will be breastfeeding and cloth diapering (prefolds and bummis covers). I will be home for the first 4 months. We do have our own washer and live in a two bedroom apartment. We have two cats. We're having a boy. :)

    Thanks

  • Kidney stone that won't pass!?

Have any pregnant women out there had a kidney stone during pregnancy that just wouldn't pass even though it's tiny (3mm)?

What ended up happening? I've had this sucker for a month now and the urologist and ob both say we'll just watch and wait. It's just sitting in my lower ureter as far as we know. I was hospitalized with really bad pain for a few days last month and sent home with pain meds. The pain has dissipated since then but the last few days I've been feeling it in my side and back again.

So what happened with your stone? How long did it take to pass, did it ever pass?

  • Changing litter box location?

A little advice is needed. I'm moving the location of the litter boxes due to a new baby needing the current space as a nursery. They'll have four months to get used to it before the little one arrives. I've already set up the two new boxes in the ultimate position that I'd like them to be. Meanwhile I've been moving the old ones a little closer to the new ones everyday (just in the next room). The cats have started using the new ones as well. Good or bad idea to get rid of the old ones? Should I continue with the moving process or is it not necessary?

  • Kidney Stones While Pregnant?

Anybody out there get a kidney stone while pregnant? What was your experience?

    My situation:

21 weeks pregnant with a confirmed kidney stone of 3mm. 29 yrs old.

What I would like to know:

    Did you pass your stone?

Did the location of the pain change as it passed thru (I am only feeling it in my back and side so far, will it extend to the groin eventually)?

    Did you get another one?

    What helped you the most?

    Thank you!

  • Question About Kidney Stone Pain for Veteran Stone Keepers?

First time kidney stone! OMG!!! Could anyone tell me if you can feel where it is in the ureter? I can feel pain but it feels like it's staying in the same place. However, I'm passing tons of urine (drinking at least a gal of water a day) so I couldn't possible be blocked. Is it actually moving and I'm just feeling the pain the same place anyway? (Right back and side) It's been 3 days... What is the feeling in progression on these devil spawn? Do you feel it hit the bladder? Does it hurt as bad when it hits the urethra as when it entered the ureter? Any experiences you'd care to relate would be great. Thank you.

More info: The stone is 3mm. I'm 21 weeks pregnant. Taking minimal amounts of percocet for the pain. Also drinking fresh lemon juice.
